Some people have a passion for crowns or

teacups. Others want to feather their nest

with unique pieces of furniture or find a

quirky lamp. We were curious to learn

what the hot ticket items are for 2012, and

talked with three experts in the field to

find the answers.

Judy Watkins, owner of Remnants of

the Past Vintage Show, says, “In these dif-

ficult economic times, everybody has

turned their focus back to their home.

Whatever they find, it’s for their sanctuary,

something that’s meaningful to them. A

lot of times before, it was, ‘oh it’s pretty,

let’s buy it.’ It’s [collecting] a little bit more

intimate now.” Judy’s top picks include

religious artifacts, antique books, portraits

and wireware.

At The Farm Chicks Antiques Show in

Spokane, Washington, owner Serena

Thompson noticed “industrial-looking

objects and a lot more metals. Galvanized

objects are really popular.” For her top

picks, Serena also listed portraits, natural

wood furniture and kitchenware.

Wood furniture is enjoying resurgence,

both natural and painted items. And big

is back. Rick Marburger of Marburger

Farm Antique Show says, “In 2008 and

2009 we didn’t see many big pieces being

brought in by dealers or bought by shop-

pers. Now, we are seeing much more in

the way of big pieces. And we see decora-

tors buying these things speculatively,

where we hadn’t seen that in the couple of

years previous.” All three experts say that

lighting continues to be popular—vin-

tage crystal chandeliers, old table lamps,

sconces and industrial lighting.

Here are our top 12 collectibles for

2012. Happy hunting!

Collecting is a personal pursuit.

WHAT: Galvanized metalGalvanized metals items, including tubs, buckets and milkpails, can be used to store items—like the sheets and pillows inthe tub shown here—or can be used as planters, and more.

WHAT: Smalls, such as teacups, creamers, silverware and LimogesTeacups can hold small items, like jewelry, or place asmall plant in one and set it by a window. Use creamersas vases for garden roses, and display silverware upright in silver cups or trophy cups.

WHAT: Outdoor furniture, especially vintage wickerMix and match styles to create your own sanctuary. Here metalchairs and white wicker sport floral fabrics, adding a femininetouch. Don’t be afraid to use these types of pieces inside. Thegreen metal chairs would look great as indoor barstools, whilewicker is right for most any room.

WHAT: WirewareWireware items can be used throughoutyour home, and include baskets, shelves, candleholders and more. Use a tiered basketin your home office to hold stationary andstamps or vintage ribbon.

WHAT: LightingStill popular are crystal chandeliers, up-and-comingare sconces and chandeliers made from industrial parts.Special lighting can transform any space—bathrooms, kitchens, dining rooms, living rooms and even babynurseries benefit from their beauty.

WHAT: KitchenwareFrom old sifters and baking tools to bowls andstorage tins, kitchenware is so…useful. If somethingis too beat up to use as it was originally intended, create something fun with it, like this clock.

WHAT: PrimitivesPrimitives objects, from dolls to furniture, aresimple and utilitarian, no fancy curves or embell-ishments will be found on these items. A primi-tive cabinet and shelf look great when filled withperiod items. Or, step out of the box and pairthem with silver and crystal; the juxtapositionwould create a striking vignette.

WHAT: Antique booksWith their innate character, books add style to any set-ting. Use them to create layers in vignettes, put a coupleunder a lamp to lift it up or stack them together on a shelf.

WHAT: PortraitsFor big impact, fill an entire wall with oldpainted portraits. A beautiful portrait is aconversation starter—even if you don’tknow the name or history of the persondepicted in the painting. Display oneabove a buffet or lean a couple of differentsize portraits on a shelf or mantel.

WHAT: Wood furniture, natural and paintedMix it up—dress up your big pieces with industrial acces-sories. Or, add some retro knobs to a wooden dresser. Ifyour pieces are painted, stay within the same or coordi-nating color families.

WHAT: Religiousartifacts

From rosary beads and crosses to jewel-enc-rusted crowns, these history filled objects are stun-ning all on their own. Drape rosary beads from anold frame or set them in a pretty dish. Place a crownon top of a book, in an old urn, or set it under acloche for a stunning showpiece.

MIX IT UP—that’s the word on the street

from designers in the know. Instead of devis-

ing interiors based on a single theme or era,

such as farmhouse or primitives or Victorian

antiques, design-savvy homeowners are

blending furniture and accessories to create

spaces that reflect their personal style.

Rick Marburger has a front row seat to devel-

oping trends in flea market décor, and perhaps

some of the factors driving them, at his Mar-

burger Farm Antiques Show. “A younger set is

coming into the show. As some of the deal-

ers get older and can’t withstand the rigors

of our show—outside, hot, lots of physical

excursion—we see a younger group com-

ing in, both dealers and buyers,” Rick says.

Mixing industrial

pieces, like the tabletop andcabinets seen here, along with vin-

tage items, like table base and chairs,is a big design trend this year. Blend-

ing finishes, tattered with shiny, orsoft textures with rough sur-

faces is also popular.

“With this I’m seeing newer merchandise

that’s more cutting edge. It’s still antique

driven, but I’m seeing booths with that and

maybe with something industrial or some-

thing that is very cool and hip.”

These changes are not only bringing

new merchandise to flea market venues,

they are also influencing interior design

trends. Where many homeowners may

have bought décor items in one particular

style, now it’s about mixing eras and

styles. Serena Thompson, of The Farm

Chicks Antiques Show, is noticing inter-

esting developments on the design front.

“I am seeing more industrial-looking

decorating. This includes a lot more

metals—big chunky metal pieces that

are being used in the home.” These can

include an oversized metal table being used

in place of glass-topped or wood table in the

dining room. Or old mechanic’s drawers

used as storage cabinets and metal lockers

used in place of wooden armoires. “There

is a place here in Spokane [Washing-

ton], called Deja Nue” Serena says.

“Erica Parish and Lana Neuman create

amazing pieces by repurposing or reusing

these industrial elements in new ways. They

are even being sought out by Calvin Klein

and other top designers for their ideas and

expertise.” Rick Marburger sees homeown-

ers “using outdoor furniture in the home,

like metal garden chairs and glass-topped

metal tables in the dining room.”

Mid-century modern and art deco pieces

are also finding their way on to the design

front. At her Remnants of the Past Vintage

Show Judy Watkins found that “a lot of

the primitives looked great mixed with the

more modern things. I noticed a lot of

mid-century modern, but they are repur-

posed items.” Framing old linens or vin-

tage ephemera in more modern frames is

one idea. Or try placing an amazing art

deco lamp on a vintage table with

chipped paint. “The juxtaposition of

modern mixed with a signature vintage

piece is a popular look,” Judy says.

Creating the home of your dreams is

about finding the mix that works for you.

Reconfiguringindustrial or other metal

pieces into unusual light fixtures is veryhip and an easy way to update your

rooms. Repurposed studio lighting foruse in the home, like the one on thetripod seen here, adds a big design

punch without taking up alot of space.

Galvanizedbuckets and

other metal piecesare all rage; blend them with painted

furniture for a modern design approach.Repurpose items to get the most use out

of them. For instance, fill old suitcaseswith extra pillows or linens, thenstack the cases next to a sofa or

chair for a side table witha twist.

Remnants of the Past Vintage Show

At the Remnants of the Past Vintage Show, you’ll findsilver champagne buckets full of antique flatware, rusticburlap pillows adorned with felt flowers and old portraitsof other people's ancestors. Look up and you're likely tospot handcrafted chandeliers that manage to look bothwhimsical and industrial. And that's just a start.

Former antique shop owner, Judy Watkins, started theshow in 2007, and it’s already a favorite with shoppers andshelter magazines alike. Romantic Homes magazine gave ittop billing in its 2011 list of the top 10 romantic flea mar-kets. Shabby Chic author Rachael Ashwell named Remnantsof the Past as one of her five favorite flea markets.

Remnants of the Past is a family affair. You'll see Judy’shusband and children on duty at the show. Feel free tobring your menfolk too. If they get tired of shopping, theycan relax in the designated Man Cave until it's time to loadthe car.

The Remnants of the Past Vintage Show takes place atthe Alex Madonna Expo Center in San Luis Obispo, Califor-nia, typically in June and October. The next show is sched-uled for June 2 and 3, 2012.

Treasure Island FleaTreasure Island Flea—one of San Francisco's newestflea markets—features more than just traditional fleamarket fare. You’ll still find lots of antique and vintageitems, but organizers started the market in 2011 as ashowcase for indie designers in the Bay Area.

Many of the designers fashion their wares from recy-cled and repurposed materials. The husband-and-wifeteam of The Castle Walls (thecastlewalls.com) are goodexamples. James makes steampunk jewelry from oldclocks and watches, and Mary makes her pieces fromvintage board-game tiles. Cisco of Restore & Rework(restoreandrework.com) upcycles just about every-thing into new furniture and home accessories.

Treasure Island Flea takes place on the last Saturdayand Sunday of the month, on historic Treasure Island.Though typically an open-air market, the flea marketis moving indoors for the rainy season. Through theend of March, look for Treasure Island Flea inside OneAvenue of the Palms, which is the last building stand-ing from the 1939 San Francisco World Fair.

The Randolph Street Market

Chicago’s Randolph Street Market is partantique show, part artisan market, partfashion house and all party.

You won't find booths full of tube socksand toiletries, not unless the tube socks arehand-knitted from hand-spun yarn and thetoiletries are brewed in the vendor's homelaboratory. The market turns down four appli-cants for every vendor they approve. Then, they arrange the vendors “the way one seats adinner party.” Market organizers look for per-sonality, display style and chemistry betweenthe vendors.

Though unusual, the Randolph Street Mar-ket system seems to work. Shoppers blanketthe monthly market, and many of the ven-dors have been discovered by Hollywood setdecorators, stylists, store merchandisers andart buyers.

The Randolph Street Market opens for busi-ness on one weekend each month. Specialmarket sections include the Chicago AntiqueMarket, the Indie Designer Market and Mod-ern Vintage Chicago. What's coming next?Who knows, but you can bet you'll have ablast.

Zurko PromotionsWhen you attend one of Zurko Promotions’ late- or all-night flea markets, you mayspot your next-door neighbor shopping in his pajamas. If you go in late October, youmight even end up haggling with Count Dracula.

Shoppers have favored the All-Night Flea Market for years. It takes place on the third Saturday of every August. Based on last year's success, the Haunted Halloween Flea Marketis on its way to becoming legend too. Both flea markets are located at the DuPage CountyFairgrounds in Wheaton, Illinois.

Zurko typically organizes around 40 weekend events each year, including antique showsand flea markets across Illinois, Wisconsin and Michigan. The monthly Antique Market atthe Grayslake County Fairgrounds in Libertyville, Illinois features nearly 100,000 squarefeet of antiques indoors, and that's not counting the outdoor booths.

After 44 years in business, Bob Zurko believes in his events and his merchandise. He'llproudly tell you, “Unlike stocks, antiques never go to zero.”

Springfield Antique Show & Flea Market

When you attend the Springfield AntiqueShow & Flea Market, you’ll bump elbows withsome of the nation's most successful antiquedealers, not all of them selling. Many are shop-ping to fill their own booths and retail shops. The pieces are fine enough to please their mostdiscriminating customers, and the selling pricesare low enough to allow for markup. Show pro-ducer Jon Jenkins calls it “the most buyableshow in the country.”

Jenkins Management also produces theHarwinton/Farmington Antiques & DesignWeekend in Harwinton, Connecticut and theTailgate-Music Valley Show in Hendersonville,Tennessee, which is part of the greaterNashville area. Harwinton weekends takeplace in June and September. The Nashvilleevent occurs in February.

Recent additions to the Tailgate-Music Val-ley Show include the Vintage Marketplace, which features original and upcycled art, home furnishings and fashion. After a tremen-dous response—which included a completelynew generation of antique-show shoppers—Jenkins plans to open the Vintage Market-place at the Springfield shows as of May.

The Springfield Antique Show & Flea Markettakes place at Ohio's Clark County Fairgroundson the third weekend of each month, exceptfor June, July and December. Jenkins advisesfirst-time attendees to come in May or Sep-tember, which are three-day Extravaganzaweekends with approximately 2000 vendors.

The Farm Chicks Antiques Show

Just over a decade ago, a neighbor invited Ser-ena Thompson of The Farm Chicks AntiquesShow to go through an old homestead on hisproperty. The home contained all of its originalcontents, as well as a few creative modifications.Serena describes rooms built from old doors and aporch constructed out of bed springs.

Before long, Serena started scouring other neigh-bors’ farms. She and a friend traded new merchan-dise for the neighbors’ so-called junk, and eventu-ally had far more than they could use. They decidedto hold a barn sale in 2002, and the Farm ChicksAntiques Show was born.

Today, the oft-lauded Farm Chicks Antiques Showhas more than 200 sellers, and shoppers flock tothe Washington state event from all over the world.

The Farm Chicks Antiques Show takes place onthe first Saturday and Sunday of each June at theSpokane County Fairgrounds. Serena describes it as“primarily an antiques show with a tiny bit of hand-crafted items mixed in for fun and added style.”
