HelloandwelcomebacktoFGM’sfreeflatpickinglessonportionofourmonthlynewsletter.ThismonthIhavearrangedasimpleversionofatunewrittenbyoneofmystudents!Iteachalotoflessons;fromprivatelessonstofestivalworkshops.Inadditiontoteachingmystudentsclassictraditionalmelodies,Ialwaysencouragemusicalcreativityandoftenchallengemystudentstowriteatune. Whenthispiecewaspresentedtomeatalessononeweek,Iwasblownawaybythecompletednatureofthetune.Sosimple,yetsoprofound.IthadtheperfectAABBstructure,memorablephrasing,andamelodichook.“Dude,youwroteafiddletune!”Isaidasmystudentfinishedlayin’thisoneonme.IaskedhimifhemindedifIuseditformyFGMe-lessonthismonth.Hesaid“sure!” “AKindofIrish,”asAdamcallsit,isanAABBfiddletunewithanIrish/minorvibe.Let’stakealook.Youwillnotice,bylookingatthetab,thatthefirstfretisnotusedatallinthetunewhilethesecondandforthfretsshowupallot.Tryusingsecondpositionforyourlefthand(Indexforsecondfret,middleforthird,ringforfourth,andpinkyforfifth)tograballthenoteswithease.ThismeansintheBsectionyouwillbeusingyourpinkyforthefifthfret.Ifyousticktothisfingeringyouwillfindthatallthenotesare“rightthere.” Next,let’squicklyreviewyourrighthandpickdirection.Whenpickingmeasureswithcontinuouseighthnotes,alternate thestrokes(down/uppicking),butwhenyouarriveatconsecutivequarternotes, repeatdownstrokes.Pleasereferbacktomy“PickStrokeTheory”e-lessonforamoreindepthlookatwhyandwhentousethecorrectpickstrokes.Onceyouunderstandwhy,youwillbegintofeeltheinnerpulseofthedownandupbeats.Forthelastnoteinmeasure7youwill,ofcourse,beusinganUPSTROKE.Ifyouarenotsurewhy,youwillbenefitfromlookingbackatthepickstrokelesson.Afteryougetyourlefthandplayingthecorrectfretswiththecorrectfinger,andyougetyourpickgoingdownandupintherightplaces,Iknowyouwillfindthismelodyreallyfuntoplay. WhileIwasjammingthistunewithmystudent,Istumbleduponacoupleinterestingchordsubstitutions.IntheBsectionIreplacedtheEminthefourthmeasurewithanA7andreplacedtheEminthefifthmeasurewithaC9.Listentothee-lessonmp3toheartheharmonicinterestthesesubsaddtothemelody(Iusedthemontherepeat).IlearnedtheA7/EmsubrelationshipfromlisteningtotherhythmguitarofthegreatJohnDoylewhousestheseideaskindsofideaswhenbackingupfiddlerLizCarroll.MyfriendAaronO’RourkealsoneverpassesuptheopportunitytosubanA7inanEmflavoredIrishtune.Itsoundssocool.
