Pastor Jennifer Coffey

Dear Fairview Friends and Family,

September was an exciting month at Fairview! The backpack ministry has begun preparing

weekend meal bags on a weekly basis to share the love of Jesus with children who have little to nothing to

eat over the weekend at Park Avenue Elementary School. The new J.U.M.P. (Junior United Methodist

People) program kicked off, offering a Sunday evening discipleship opportunity for elementary aged

children. We had an awesome Bring a Friend to Church Sunday and church picnic with guest band, great

food, inflatables, and corn hole - and several of our staff members enjoyed having pies thrown at them

with all of the friends who joined us! Sunday Schools, Youth Group, and small groups have begun new

studies, and rehearsals are underway for this year’s Christmas Program: Everybody Was Worried.

Also this past month, Fairview embraced a new vision to live as faithful disciples of Jesus Christ.

This vision comes out of the work, prayers and discernment over the last year of our listening groups,

staff, leaders, visioning team, committees, and more! We’ve spent time looking at who Fairview has been,

who we are today, and who God is calling us to be in the years to come. Our new vision, which was

adopted by the Church Council in mid-August and shared in worship last month, is:

Love God. Share Hope. Serve All.

With our new vision we also celebrate who we are in Christ today with our new mission statement:

Fairview is a Christ-centered welcoming church that loves the community in undeniable ways. I am

proud to be your pastor as we seek to follow Christ in all we do today and as we plan for the next chapter

of God’s story at Fairview UMC. As we live into our new vision, I invite you to join us in the coming

months as we pray, share, and dream together about what it means to love God, share hope, and serve all!

Grace & Peace,

Pastor Coffey

“He answered, ‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all

your strength, and with all your mind; and your neighbor as yourself.’ And [Jesus] said to him, ‘You have

given the right answer; do this, and you will live.’” ~ Luke 10:27-28

Before we jump into October, I wanted to take just a minute to reflect back on our recent church picnic and

Bring a Friend to Church Day. I want to say thank you to everyone who worked so hard to make that day such a

success. We could not have asked for a better day and the tent helped make the shaded areas cool. Thanks to

everyone who brought food; moved, set up, or tore down tables and chairs; manned bounce houses; received food;

stuffed hotdogs; and attended our event. Everything, including the whipped cream pies, was wonderful about that

day. It just goes to show you when the Body of Christ at Fairview UMC sets their minds to something, anything is

possible. Again thanks to all who made that day special.

October is here and we have a lot of fun things coming up. The end of 2017 is in sight and I am just in awe at

how quickly this year has passed.

October 1st we will resume our J.U.M.P. (Junior United Methodist People) program for kids in grades 1st-

5th. We are calling that age group our Frogs. Frogs will meet each week from 6-8. Dinner is from 6-6:30, followed

by music from 6:30-7. From 7-7:30 we do our lesson and from 7:30-8 we do games or a craft. We had a great time

at our first meeting. I would encourage you to bring your children/grandchildren that are of this age to participate.

Our Tadpoles (kids age 3-Kindergarten) will meet once a month (dates to be determined). For the month of October,

the Tadpoles will meet from 5-6:30 on October 22nd. There will be more information coming about that evening. I

am excited to add this program to our discipleship offerings for kids.

Adult Bible studies are still in the works. I am working on some more offerings as we move ahead this year.

Currently Pastor Coffey is offering a study on the book of James on Wednesday mornings. Please feel free to jump

into that study if you would like. I need to hear from you on things you might be interested in learning or studying

so I can make sure what we offer is what you would like to do.

We are in need of volunteers to help us serve in the nursery and as a second set of hands in Children’s

Church. Volunteers from youth age and up will be accepted and put into a rotation. Please see me if you are

interested in helping out.

Our backpack ministry is well under way. By the time you read this we will be on our 4th week of running

the program. Each team can still accommodate more volunteers so if you would like to get involved please speak to

Lynn Clark, Suzanne Giffen, or myself. We will be glad to get you plugged into a team and working. Many thanks

go out to all who are volunteering already and to those who have agreed to sponsor children. We currently have a

little over 80 sponsored children. This is a very exciting time to watch and see all that is happening with our

backpack program.

Save the Date for our Young Hearts Luncheon. We will be honoring our Veterans on November 11th with a

small luncheon. Please sign up on the green bulletin board by the Welcome Center if you will be able to attend.

I pray that in the days and weeks ahead you continue to be blessed!

Find the All Saints bulletin insert

draft on the purple Upcoming

Events bulletin board in the

hallway. If you would like to

recognize a saint who has died or

been born in the last 12 months

please fill in their name on the

sheet, or contact the church office

by Sunday, October 29.

Dear Friends and Family of Fairview, I was

overwhelmed with the outpouring of donations

and support for my Eagle Scout fundraiser. The

yard and bake sales were a huge success and I

surpassed my goal. I look forward to

completing my Eagle Scout project and having

a nice pantry for the backpack ministry. I am

very fortunate to belong to such a loving

church family. Thank you for this wonderful

opportunity to serve our community!

Backpack Ministry

by June Scheier

In John 21:15-17, Jesus tells Peter that if he loves him, he

is to “feed my lambs”. We at Fairview Church are working this

school year to take care of some of the little ones at Park Avenue

Elementary School. We may never know how, but we trust that

God will lead us to have a positive impact on their lives. The first

bags were delivered the second week in September and we are

standing on faith that we will be able to do this weekly for the2017-2018 season.

James has talked about being hungry as a child growing up in a family of eight children,

collecting pop bottles for refunds to purchase a single candy bar. If we can keep any of these

little ones in our community from being hungry, we are sure to receive a blessing for it.

Thank all of you for your continued support and please keep the backpack ministry and

its recipients in your prayers as we go forward.

To donate or volunteer for this community program, please see Suzanne Giffen or Lynn Clark.

Greetings Fairview!

The year is just flying by so fast! Here we are almost in October, and the Christmas

program will be here before we know it. Thank you to everyone who signed up for the music

portion of the program. It looks like the little children will learn their music during children’s

music in Sunday school. The older kids will be able to learn the music during JUMP, and I am

currently working to get a slot for working with the youth and adults. With Zachary Arduca,

our new Director of Traditional Music Ministry, I am confident this will all come together!

Please continue to submit any song requests that you may have to me or to someone in

the praise team, so that the music may continue to cater to everyone at Fairview. I love the

traditional hymns that we have incorporated lately, and many people have asked me to use

them more often! Hence, I know the music and the Holy Spirit are alive in our church!

Please stop by the Children’s Chapel and listen to our little ones sing their hearts out! I

am so proud of each of them and feel so blessed to be able to work with them. They are currently working on some

patriotic songs they will be sharing at the Young Hearts Veteran’s Day Luncheon on November 11, and I know they

are going to do a fabulous job!

If you have signed up for the music portion of the Christmas Program, Everyone Was Worried, please be on

the lookout for an email from me which explain rehearsal times. The little children are rehearsing on Sunday

mornings during Sunday school. The older children are rehearsing on Sunday evenings from 6:30-7:00 in the

Narthex during JUMP. I am planning for the youth and adults that have signed up to rehearse on some Tuesday

evenings following Praise Team and Adult Choir. Then everyone will come together for the costume fitting and

rehearsal on December 10 and for the dress rehearsal on December 16.

I am very grateful for all the many blessings that have happened to the music program at Fairview! Please let

me know if you have any questions, and let’s continue to grow our amazing congregation!

Music and Blessings!

First: Putting God First in Living and Giving

Fairview UMC’s Stewardship Series

Do we worship idols? The answer may surprise you. During the month of October, our church will hear

about God’s generosity and our response as we experience our stewardship series, First: Putting God First in

Living and Giving, developed by author and pastor Mike Slaughter of Ginghamsburg Church.

We are made in God’s image and are meant to be creators of life and hope, not the consumers of our

culture’s shiny gods. We have the ability to change the world and create a legacy that will live forever in the

lives of generations to follow. That legacy starts when each of us takes the hard steps of financial discipline and

fulfilling the call to generosity that God has placed in all of us.

The goal of this stewardship series is not to make you feel guilty, nor is it to say that you have to be

exactly like this or that person. The goal is for all of us to ask questions of ourselves and be open to the

possibility that God will lead us in new directions in our lives.

We’ll be challenged in a number of different ways. We’ll be asked to look for the idols in our own lives

(hint: Most of them aren’t animals made of gold.) and name the ways these idols enslave us, holding us back

from living in the true freedom that God desires for us. We’ll be challenged to consider the place that money,

work, and debt have in our own lives. What are our common understandings of these, and might the witness of

scripture lead us to some different understandings? We’ll be challenged to ask ourselves what it means for us to

be faithful, to save, and to give. How do we balance all the competing interests in our lives? What priorities

does God want us to have?

Finally, we’ll be challenged to give with our hearts, not out of obligation or a sense of duty, and not just

when we think the recipient deserves our gift. Instead, we’ll be challenged to give the way God gives—freely,

fully, with no favorites or expectations of repayment. It is our prayer that, at the end of these four weeks, we

will have begun to grow into the individuals and the church that God knows we can be. Please join us in First:

Putting God First in Living and Giving.

Welcome to our new Traditional Music Ministry staff!

Fairview UMC is excited to welcome two new part-time staff members to our team:

Please join us in welcoming Zachary and Deedee to Fairview UMC!

Zachary Arduca

Director of Traditional Music Ministry

Zachary has 8 years of musical experience in multiple

instruments and voice, as well as leadership in various

musical endeavors. He’s passionate about worship and

music and will bring many gifts to the traditional

music ministry at Fairview. He is currently working

on a Bachelor’s of Music Production degree through

Berklee College of Music Online.

Delores “Deedee” Dillard

Accompanist

Deedee brings over 40 years of experience playing

piano and organ in the Danville area. As a church

musician, she will bring many gifts to the music

ministry and worship at Fairview. She works full time

at Danville Regional Medical Center as a switchboard

operator. She has two children and two grandchildren

who are great blessings in her life!

Our littlest children will be our

Tadpoles. Each week during their

Sunday School time, Gary will be

coming in around 10:30 to sing and

teach music. This will offer a great

opportunity for music for our

youngest disciples while they are

already here and engaged. And once a

month on Sunday, the Tadpoles will

meet for a biblical-based program and

games to enrich their minds and meet

their creative needs from 5-6 and eat

dinner with our Frog friends from 6-

6:30. First meeting is October 22.

Each week we will offer lots of

Bible-based fun, fellowship, and

learning. We are hoping that a

modular format will give

multiple entry and exit points to

help fit everyone's busy

schedules and lives. We are still

looking for volunteers and help

with our dinners. Please let

Katherine Lewis know if you

can help in any way!

be offering a class on how to use

our Bible.

Frogs continue to meet on

Sundays at 6:00 pm in the Narthex.

Please let Katherine know if you

On behalf of SPRC, the staff/pastor and congregation, we thank the many people who have served and

led in the 11:00am traditional music ministry over the last year during our search to fill the staff

positions. Special thanks to Beth Smith, Bettye Parker, Marvin Fuqua, Martha Sue Thompson, and the

adult chancel choir for sharing your gifts and making joyful music for the Lord during this time!
