Several weeks ago as I left the Humility of Mary Center, I noted

that the large magnolia tree by our entranceway seemed to have something at the ends of the branches. Closer examination revealed that there were actually buds present on the limbs! Th ese were not the tiny points one can observe on the naked branches in early spring but rather robust, fuzzy ovals. I thought of the cold weather present and still to come this winter. How would these eager early buds fare before the defi nitive arrival of spring?

While there is not yet an answer to that question, the image stuck with me and came to mind as I prepared

to write about some new steps on our CHM journey in relation to mission advancement, especially the CHM Ministry Development Summit.

You who receive Th e Flame are loyal friends with deep connections to the Congregation of the Humility of Mary. We value your support and partnership in carrying out our mission to “work for justice within the human family and to care for Earth itself.” We want to create even stronger connections with those who carry on the CHM mission through our three sponsored ministries in Iowa: Humility of Mary Shelter, Inc. (HMSI), Our Lady of the Prairie Retreat (OLPR) and Humility of Mary Housing, Inc.(HMHI).

Th ese ministries have been experiencing changes that reminded me of those buds. I sense that there

is an inner dynamic emerging from within our community, a process of something new happening, a bubbling up of good energy, a synergy.

Synergy is defi ned as, “Th e interaction of two or more agents or forces so that their combined eff ect is greater than the sum of their individual eff ects.” It reminds me of a quote from the prophet Isaiah, “See, I am doing something new…do you not perceive it?”(Is 43:19a)

Th e Flame is published three times a year for the Congregation of the Humility of Mary and its friends.

Our Mission: We, the members of the Congregation of the Humility of Mary, call one another to live the Gospel with simplicity and joy following the example of Mary.

Like our founders, we strive to be attentive to the call of the Spirit in the signs of our times, especially the needs of the poor and the powerless.

We commit ourselves as individuals and as a congregation to work for justice within the human family and to care for the earth itself.

-Joshua 3:5

So what is happening? A major event was the recent hiring of a development director, Sandi Burrichter, to be shared by our two Davenport non-profi ts, Humility of Mary Housing, Inc. (HMHI) and Humility of Mary Shelter, Inc. (HMSI). Sandi has been working with the HMSI and HMHI development committees to continue and expand their past successes in generating funds to sustain these ministries well into the future.

Our Lady of the Prairie Retreat Advisory Committee members off er their time, talent and treasure to enhance that ministry. Th ey have added new members to the Development and Marketing sub-committee. All are dedicated to making Th e Prairie off erings better known, utilized and supported.

Such energies have helped to attract new partners for the three ministries. Th ey have increased the circle of friends who work with the CHM community to deepen awareness of the CHM mission and expand the reach of the services provided by the three sponsored ministries. Inside this issue you will fi nd the friends listed who contribute through the CHM Development Offi ce.

Th is seemed an opportune time to gather the Humility of Mary sisters, staff s, boards, and advisory and development committee members in order to learn more about each other, the congregation and the ministries. Representatives have met and are planning a CHM Ministry Development Summit for March 30, 9:45 a.m. – 2:30 p.m. at the Adler Health Education Center in Davenport. We anticipate that this day will result in more synergy. We look forward to even greater collaboration so that these early “buds” will open and produce abundant fruit for the future of the CHM mission and its sponsored ministries.

Pope Francis proclaimed 2015 a Year of

Consecrated Life, starting on the 1st Sunday of Advent, the weekend of November 2, 2014, and ending on February 2, 2016, the World Day of Consecrated Life. It’s purpose, as stated by the Vatican, is to “make a grateful remembrance of the recent past, while embracing the future with hope and living the present with passion.”

Consecration, in general, is an act by which a person is dedicated to the service and worship of God. As the Catholic Church celebrates the Year of Consecrated Life, it is promoting “Days with Religious” initiatives and resources to help people learn about the consecrated life of religious women and men. Th e events will focus on sharing experiences of prayer, service and community life with those living a consecrated life.

Join the Sisters of Humility for a variety of events held throughout this celebratory year.

Singer songwriter Peter Mayer through song and narrative tells the story of the universe, an epic that awakens awe and wonder and begs to be learned as we seek our right relationship with planet Earth. Whimsical, humorous, and profound, his music breaks the boundaries of “folk,” and transcends to a realm beyond the everyday love song, to a place of wonder at the very fact of life itself. With a background in theology, much of Peter’s songwriting evokes a sense of spirituality, and a feeling that the world is a sacred place.

CONGREGATION OF THE HUMILITY OF MARY

Our Lady of the Prairie programs for 2015 focus

on thoughts of Pope Francis: “Let us be renewed by God’s mercy, be loved by Jesus, enable the power of his love to transform our lives too; and become agents of this mercy, channels through which God can water the earth, protect all creation and make justice and peace fl ourish.”1

What does it mean to be renewed by God’s mercy? Mercy, and synonymously, compassion are the foundation of the gospel. In story after story we see Jesus reaching out to the leper, the grieving, the hungry, the searching and the doubtful. He principally asks, “What do you want?” or “What do you need? Who are you searching for?” Basically he says, “Come and see. See where I live, break bread with me, pray with me, refl ect with me about the love and compassion my father has for you.” Th ese gospel stories are also the root of ministries for the Sisters of the Humility of Mary, whether through teaching, hospital caring, outreach to the homeless and powerless, or off ering retreats at Our Lady of the Prairie.2

To be renewed by God’s mercy is to take part in one or other of the 54 programs off ered this year at Our Lady of the Prairie Retreat.3

Especially popular are our

Th e Quality of Mercyby Kathleen Storms, SSND, Director, Th e Prairie Retreat

monthly Come to the Quiet Retreats. Each month we focus on a seasonal aspect, inviting a kaleidoscopic view of mercy and compassion—to ourselves, our world and our companions on the journey. Th is year Pat Shea, from Moline, IL, a presenter and wise woman in the Celtic tradition, will lead us in musings and open our hearts and souls to the holy in all of life.

We also are off ering refl ection days designed to bring healing and extend compassion: Essential Oils; Bridging the Gap in Supporting Soldiers, Veterans and their Families; I’m Drowning: How to Care for Yourself While Caring for Others; Marriage Spirituality; From Rupture to Redemption; Th e Gospel Message of Mercy; and Home Tonight with Henri Nouwen. Don’t miss special days to celebrate mothers, fathers, and mentors.

For some, learning and practicing a new craft while sharing companionship off er compassion: Knit One, Pray Too; Basket Weaving, Honoring the Holy in Nature through Art; Cooking Up a Storm, and our Local Foods Day are perennial favorites.

As Pope Francis invites, become agents of mercy for Earth: Retreat into the Universe Story, Songs of the Universe Concert and Retreat. Sometimes just

hearing the story evokes mercy and a change of heart when the task seems so large and insurmountable. And fi nally, most of us need extended times to come apart for a while: Take Up Your Cross: A Retreat for Men; God in Love: A Women’s Retreat; A Labyrinth Retreat; Five Day Private or Directed Retreat; Who Will Light the Way? Lanterns for the Spiritual Journey; Icon Retreat: Mary, Untier of Knots.

So what is mercy? It is the power to bring healing, to walk in the shoes of another, to honor the diff erences among us, to extend love to the stranger, to open hearts to the weary, to deepen our awareness and knowledge of God. It is to be mercy and extend mercy to others as captured in the words of William Shakespeare:

“Th e quality of mercy is not strained. It droppeth as the gentle rain from heaven upon the place beneath. It is twice blessed: it blesseth him that gives and him that takes.

‘Tis mightiest in the mightiest. It becomes the throned monarch better than his crown. His scepter shows the force of temporal power,Th e attribute to awe and majesty,Wherein doth sit the dread and fear of kings. But mercy is above this sceptered sway,It is enthroned in the hearts of kings,It is an attribute to God himself. And earthly power doth then show likest God’s,When mercy seasons justice…” (William Shakespeare, Merchant of Venice, Act 4 Scene 1)______________________________1Pope Francis Easter message, March 31, 2013 2Humility of Mary Housing, Humility of Mary Shelter and Our Lady of the Prairie Retreat are three outreach ministries sponsored by the Congregation of the Humility of Mary3Check descriptions, dates and times for all programs on the CHM website: www.chmiowa.org), or sign-up to receive our monthly email reminder of upcoming programs. There are many paths to connecting with the

Sisters of the Humility of Mary and the CHM mission. Connections have been made through Ottumwa Heights College, St. Joseph’s Hospital, Marycrest College, many schools throughout Iowa, Illinois and Montana, and by ministries as far away as Ecuador and Mexico, to name just a few.

Th e paths to CHM mission in the 21st century are strong and diverse, and continue through Humility of Mary Housing, Humility of Mary Shelter and Our Lady of the Prairie Retreat Center.

Paths of Connectionby Karen Brooke, CHM Development Director

Joy and Dennis Flaherty

“peace and quiet” appeared as an oasis for them in their very busy lives. Joy currently serves on the Our Lady of the Prairie Retreat Advisory Board and is on the steering committee for the annual “Spirit of the Prairie” fund raising event, assisting with sponsorship development and marketing.

Th eir careers brought Joy and Dennis Flaherty to the Quad Cities, where they met and married in 1975. Joy, having completed her master’s degree at Drake University, came to Augustana College in Rock Island, IL, as director of women’s residence halls. Her career path took her out of academics and on the road to a busy sales business for 32 years. Dennis owns his own business, Continental Fire Adjusters, a public insurance adjusting fi rm. In addition, every year during the holiday season, along with Dennis’s brothers Gary and Jay, they take six weeks away from their respective businesses to sell Flaherty’s Tom & Jerry Batter, the well-known popular product and business their father Bill Flaherty began in 1947.

What began as a hobby for Joy in her own kitchen, making Irish candy for family and friends, became a part of the Flaherty family business 22 years ago. Flaherty’s, Th e Irish Candy Company now

has 34 products, featuring 18 gourmet candies, all made in the USA by hand the old fashioned way. In her “retirement” Joy helps manage the company and is a featured vendor at specialty food and gift shows throughout the Midwest.

Joy and Dennis feel very strongly about “giving back” to their community and sharing their time and resources with causes and organizations they believe in. It was the beauty of Th e Prairie that drew Joy in, but it’s the mission of sharing that special hospitality and faith-based programming so fundamental to the CHM mission that sustains her commitment. In her

I want everyone to feel the peace and know the joy that comes from being in a sacred place where all creatures are respected and valued.

It was the “Spirit of the Prairie” that caught the attention of Joy and Dennis Flaherty. Having grown up in the north central midwest, Joy in the upper peninsula of Michigan and Dennis in the St. Paul, Minnesota, area, they both have a deep appreciation for the outdoors.

Th e Prairie, with its walking paths, labyrinth, beautiful prairie grasses, abundant wildlife and simply the

words, “I want everyone to feel the peace and know the joy that comes from being in a sacred place where all creatures and nature are respected and valued.” It is her hope to assist in raising more awareness of Th e Prairie, both in programming and for meeting space; and to encourage others to participate and volunteer. She adds, “Being retired doesn’t mean retiring from life; the key is staying engaged in organizations and people you believe in, and I believe in the Prairie!”

Chartered in 1999 by the Sisters of Humility, the CHM Magnifi cat Society was established

to identify and honor those donors whose commitment, vision and concern for the future of the Congregation of the Humility of Mary is demonstrated by their planned giving support.

Responding to the needs of the Church in the modern world, the Sisters of Humility serve in ministries that include support for the homeless and underserved (especially Humility of Mary Housing, Inc. and Humility of Mary Shelter, Inc.), immigration and healthcare advocacy, education, pastoral care in parishes, Our Lady of the Prairie Retreat, prayer and care of Earth. Planned gifts ensure that these vital ministries will continue.

Membership in the Magnifi cat Society is granted to each friend who makes a will provision/planned gift for the Congregation of the Humility of Mary as part of his or her estate planning.

M. Kay SnowdenI love the fact that people of all denominations, genders, and races are invited to become part of the CHM community. Associates are searching for spiritual growth. We need help; we need community; we need increasing dedication to mission with a holy zeal.
