In 2005, Crompton and Great Lakes Chemical Corporation combined to form Chemtura; a world leader in flame retardants and the world’s largest producer of plastics additives, with a portfolio of over 4000 products.

Flame retardants is our business Chemtura offers one of the world’s most comprehensive flame retardant portfolios, supported by a global network of sales and technical support. Our products include bromine-, phosphorus-, and antimony-based flame retardants, other synergists and smoke suppressants, and as a leading producer we maintain an aggressive commitment to technological innovation and product development.

Demanding applications, increasingly tougher safety standards, and the need for economically and ecologically balanced solutions makes your choice of flame retardants more complex than ever before. Chemtura offers a broad range of flame retardant chemistry that allows OEM’s the versatility to devise sustainable solutions to meet their needs.

Flame retardants – Saving lives

Giving you more choices

Fire kills approximately 4000 people per year in the US and over 5000 people per year in Europe. Countless others are spared every year by fires that are slowed or never start due to the presence of flame retardants. Chemtura is a leading supplier of flame retardant products used in a variety of applications such as furniture foam, electronic components, enclosures and building products.

Chemtura believes the public should not be forced to choose between environmental and fire safety... we must have both. To ensure we offer only those products meeting the highest of environmental and fire safety standards to our customers, our company has adopted a “greener is better” philosophy for our business and our flame retardant products.

Antimony trioxide is used as a synergist in many polymers when combined with brominated flame retardants and can be used alone as a flame retardant in PVC. Our antimony-based synergists are used in polymers, paint, textiles, polyesters, coatings, elastomers, and rubber. Choose from solutions based on antimony trioxide, sodium antimonate, and antimony synergists available in low dust, dust free, wetted and concentrate forms. Zinc borate is an effective synergist for a number of polymer systems. Chemtura offers other synergists and smoke suppressants designed to meet demanding flame retardancy and smoke evolution requirements.

Chemtura’s brominated flame retardants have a long history of providing outstanding flame retardant protection. They are used in a wide variety of applications from electronic housings, to printed wire boards and electrical connectors to flexible and rigid polyurethane foam. Brominated flame retardants provide optimal processing while maintaining outstanding physical properties in a cost effective manner.

Phosphorus flame retardants are a popular choice for electronic housing applications where improved UV stability is a key criterion. Chemtura’s Reofos® phosphorus flame retardants are used extensively in a wide variety of applications. In addition to providing outstanding flame retardant protection, they also facilitate plasticizing properties providing additional value when formulating flame retarded PVC materials.
