6 YOUR IDEAL WOOD FIRE

How to choose your ideal wood fire

Functional considerations: heat output, energy efficiency and usabilityBefore you choose the model, there is an easy way for you to

calculate the capacity of the fire that you need to heat your

home. Your local dealer can help you with this.

Clean burning and high efficiencyModern wood fires have average energy efficiencies of 80%; once

they reach their maximum temperature, they will burn cleanly

and efficiently.

The latest closed combustion wood fires release around 15 times

less CO2 than old, open fires. And the difference is even greater

when it comes to fine particles; an open fire emits around 50

times more fine particles than a modern, closed combustion fire.

Only use wood with a maximum moisture content of 20%.

The heat output of a wood fire Whilst the heat output of your wood fire must be enough for the

size of your room, size is not the only consideration.

Firstly, you must decide what you want from your wood fire. Is it

just something nice to look at that you will use occasionally?

Or will it fulfil an important role in heating your home? If heating

is the main priority, then you need a fire with the optimum heat

output for your home.

If, however, the output is too high, the room will become

uncomfortable. You will then be unable to let the fire burn at full

capacity, leading to inefficient combustion.

The quantity of logs in the wood fire determines its output. One

kilo of wood delivers approx. 4 kW capacity. A large fire with only

a few logs is not burning efficiently; that is why it’s better to opt

for a smaller fire with plenty of logs

If the output is too low, it may not provide sufficient heat for

your room, so be sure to spend time finding a fire with the correct

output for your home.

7CENTRAL HEATING WOOD FIRES

How can you calculate the heat output?The graph below shows the stages that are followed to determine

the correct heat output:

Fires with supplementary central heatingIf you want a fire that heats the whole house, not just the living

room, you should opt for a Spartherm CH (central heating) wood

fire with the S-Thermatik NEO electronic control system.. Under

this system, 70% of the output is used to heat radiators and

domestic hot water, with just 30% directly heating the room.

The unique benefits of Spartherm CH wood fires: • Efficient distribution of energy

consumption

• Enjoy rapid heating of your domestic hot water with efficient

use of energy

Heat your whole house with a CH fire (H2O fires from Spartherm)

What are the heating needs of a typical family? The parents sit by the fire, the son is taking a shower and the daughter is studying in her bedroom.

Spartherm CH wood fires cleverly link these various heating requirements. The supplementary heat from the fire is used to heat the rest of the house and the domestic hot water.

A Spartherm CH wood fire is connected to an existing

central heating system, with a large part of the output

being used to heat the entire home. Alternatively,

you could store hot water in a buffer tank. In this way,

the water is retained for later use, known as

‘heat on demand’.

Control the fire with your smartphone or tablet

The S-Thermatik NEO app, for automatic ignition and smart remote control

S-Thermatik NEO is an innovative, electronic fire control system that has

been specially developed for all Spartherm Premium and Linear series wood

fires. Lighting and controlling your fire couldn’t be easier, with this intelligent

operating system!

The fires can be controlled using the app’s graphic touchscreen, or you can still control it manually

if you prefer.

Benefits of the S-Thermatik NEO control system: • Displays how much wood has been used and when you need to top it up

• Visual and audible warning when top-up is required

• Automatically switches the air control to a safe setting in the event of a power cut

• Direct connection to the NEO controls, no distribution unit required

• Simple installation, very little space required

• Connection options to the Spartherm Sesam system for automatic

Natural interior claddings for top performance

Chamotte Spartherm wood fires have Chamotte brick interior claddings.

This is a superior quality, natural fireproof brick that ensures high

efficiency and clean burning. Chamotte bricks also provide even

heat distribution.

Ash grill Spartherm wood fires have a recessed fuel bed with a cast iron

ash grill. This grill can easily be removed to reveal the ash tray.

For a fire that is as efficient as possible, you are advised to leave

a small layer of ash on the fuel bed, although it is important

remove excess ash regularly. The ash tray must also be emptied at

regular intervals.

Drop down/side opening doorsSpartherm wood fire doors provide great flexibility of function.

They can slide vertically, tilt outwards or swing away from the fire,

depending on the model you choose and whether you are cleaning

the interior, replenishing the logs or polishing the glass. Front and

tunnel view models have tilt and slide mechanisms, whilst 2 and

3-sided Design and Linear models slide vertically and swing open

at the side.

Single or double glazing Spartherm wood fires are assembled using high quality,

heat-resistant glass. They are supplied with single glazing as

standard, whilst front and tunnel view models can be fitted

with optional double glazing for added insulation and about

30% lower radiant heat.

GLASS OPTIONS, CLEANING AND VENTILATION

Air supplyFor optimal combustion, it is important that the supply of air is well

controllable.

Types of air control:

Air leverThe handle is easily accessible and stylishly placed. It ensures infinitely

variable and controlled dosing of supply air.

supply yourself.

16 ELEVATING DOOR MECHANISM

Elevating door mechanismElevating glass doors are one of the hallmarks of Spartherm

wood fires. A sophisticated double pulley system with steel

cables and carefully balanced counterweights ensures

that the doors slide smoothly and effortlessly for

easy access to the interiors of the fires.

Soft close door systemSpartherm has developed a patented soft close glass door system.

As well as being easy to operate it ensures that, when closed, the

fire is completely airtight. This prevents any gases from escaping

into the living space and guarantees that they are expelled

through the flue.

17CONVECTION CHAMBER

Pipe warm air around the homeMost Spartherm wood fires can be fitted with a convection chamber –

an additional external compartment that encloses the fire and stores

supplementary heat. Specially designed hoses can be connected to

the top of the convection chamber in order to pipe warm air to other

rooms around the home.

This unique function offers great flexibility in terms of the fire’s

installation, its efficiency and the contribution it can make to your

home’s energy rating.

Combustion systemsWood fires have two classifications: open or closed combustion.

RLA

Open combustion ‘RLA’Wood fires with an open combustion system draw

air for combustion from inside the building.

This type of fire should only be installed in homes with

adequate ventilation.

These fires are optionally available with an external air

connection to get extra air from outside.

What is an energy label?All Spartherm wood fires have an energy label, indicating the energy

consumption of each model, which is important information for the

consumer.

The energy efficiency class is determined by the ratio of wood that a

fire uses in relation to the heat that it generates. The greener the energy

classification, the more energy efficient the fire.

Spartherm wood fires meet the strictest

criteria so always have green energy labels.

Spartherm wood fires: ready for the future!Do you want a wood fire that will meet all emissions

and energy efficiency regulations both now and in the

future? Then Spartherm is the right choice. All our wood

fires fulfil the European EcoDesign emissions directive

that will come into force in 2022. ‘EcoDesign 2022’

wood fires guarantee high efficiency, very low emissions

of fine particles and long-term enjoyment of your fire.

RLU

Closed combustion ‘RLU’Wood fires with closed combustion systems are designed for well-

insulated, mechanically ventilated and passive homes. The fire draws air

from outside the building for combustion, with no depletion of air from

inside the home.

The technical specifications at the back of this brochure indicate which

Spartherm wood fires are available with open or closed combustion systems.

COMBUSTION SYSTEMS AND ENERGY LABEL

EA

Optional: external air connectionThe option of an external air connection kit enables the installer to convert an open combustion wood fire to an external air source.

This involves the connection of a flexible hose to the base of the fire using a special adaptor. The hose can be routed through a chimney,

wall cavity or crawl space to connect to the outside air, resulting in improved performance and energy efficiency.

The technical specifications page in this brochure shows which fires have this as standard and which have it as an option.

CustomisationThe Spartherm wood fires and inserts range is very comprehensive in

terms of designs, sizes and capacities. However, if you need a fire with

non-standard dimensions to fit an existing location or chimney size,

you can order a customised wood fire. Frames can also be tailored to

your needs and for a small premium, we will make the fire to your exact

dimensions. Spartherm has the solution! Ask your dealer for the options.

Solid or with sloped sidesSpartherm built-in wood fires can be installed in several ways, with or without a frame.

There are two types of frame:

Solid frames, available in the Linear and Design series

(standard on the Premium series):

• For a sleek and robust design

• Material thickness 6 mm

• Only available in combination

with the fire

Frames with sloped sides, available in the Linear series (integral handle):

• Contemporary styling

• Material thickness 3 mm

Customisation possibleBoth frames have a standard width of 60 mm (working width 50 mm). To further personalise your fire, you could choose a wider frame

for a small premium.

is to be recessed into a hearth or floor, then you should select a frame with no base. See below for an

Sesam electronic elevating door system

Elevating doors for built-in wood fires can be opened and closed in

multiple ways. Here are the following options:

Manual:• Premium series: concealed handle

• Design series: detachable handle

• Linear series: integral handle on the door frame

Automatic:• With the optional Sesam remote control for automatically

opening and closing the elevating door (only on Premium

and Linear series)

Lux ventilation units

The use of the fire leads to heat accumulating in the cavity

that surrounds the fire assembly. This area must be ventilated

to ensure it doesn’t crack. You can choose from the following

ventilation units:

• Lux Basic, classic design, with adjustable, closing slats (white)

• Lux Lignum, modern look, with option of built-in atmospheric

lighting (ivory white or alu-metallic)

Both units can be connected to convection hoses by means of

an adaptor.

ATTACHMENTS AND ACCESSORIES

S-Thermatik NEO, smart control app

Spartherm wood fires with elevating doors can be fitted with this

system, which allows you to remotely control the fire using an app.

This gives you greater control over the fire, resulting in clean burning

and high efficiency. See the benefits on page 8 of this brochure.

S-Kamatik, automatic draught regulation

A wood fire that is connected to a chimney needs

to have a sufficient air supply. Spartherm built-in

fires can be fitted with the S-Kamatik option, a

combustion system that controls and balances the

draught, increases the pressure and optimises the

burning process. This ensures an economical and

efficient combustion.
