A first reactor preparing the future
The construction and operation of 58 reactors gives to EDF a unique experience.
Commercial production in 2014 and construction budget equal to around 5MM€
The planning of construction of severaI EPR reactors by EDF will be based on experience feedback from Flamanville 3

Contract Allotment
EDF acts as architect engineer. From our experience for the construction of the French fleet, we will maintain the same industrial organisation for new built
Reduction of number of main contracts from previous projects (150 instead of more than 700 on the previous series)
Improvement and clarification of interface management by EDF project
Duplication of this allotment for Penly 3 with some limited adaptations to take into account the industrial landscape

Design
Detailed design and procurement activities have to be anticipated as much as possible,
A key point is related to the availability of interface data coming from the suppliers to issue the execution drawings on site
The process validation and operator training was early done by a simulator developed for FA3. This was a true success
12 - CNRA/WGRNR Workshop Prague 16/17 September 2010 -
Manufacturing
First time to have most of primary components forged (for NSSS around 50 pieces)
Olkiluoto 3 was the first of a kind and Flamanville benefited from the feedback experience.
Up to now, no main quality problem but many minor non conformance due to the lack of experience of the suppliers
Difficulties encountered with the new French regulation for pressurized equipment (ESPN) which was not stabilized.
13 - CNRA/WGRNR Workshop Prague 16/17 September 2010 -
Site activities
Difficulties met for welding of the base mat liner are now solved and quality is satisfactory
Prefabrication of steelwork structures, pool formworks, reactordome,…is an approach to be reinforced
Qualification of workers is a key issue to meet the quality requirements
Anticipation of electromechanical erection in the lowest rooms of nuclear buildings has to be done to secure the schedule
Cleanness, organisation of the tasks and managerial staff are the conditions to guarantee good results for industrial safety
14 - CNRA/WGRNR Workshop Prague 16/17 September 2010 -
Competences and Skills
No new nuclear construction in France for the last 15 years
Quality levels requested by the Safety Authority higher than for the construction of previous series
Difficulties encountered by suppliers at shops and on site to meet these requirements taking into account a strong renewal of staff
Needs to reinforce controls over the chain of contractors and subcontractors

The EDF Group EPR Family Concept
EDF Group is involved, alone or with partners, in 9 EPR projects as a future licensee and as an architect engineer :
• France: Flamanville 3 (100%) + Penly 3 (50%)• China: Taishan 1&2 (30%)• UK: Hinkley Point C 1&2, Sizewell B 1&2 (80%)• US: Calvert Cliff 3 (50%)
and more to come… (Italy, …)
EDF has decided to create the “EPR family” in order to facilitate the exchanges between the projects and set up an organisation enabling each one to benefit from the feedback experience of the other projects.

EDF Group EPR FamilyOrganization
Several EDF Engineers dispatched in each EPR project abroad
A back office in EDF Engineering Division in France serving all the projects
Regular contacts and meetings between projects to share information on technical issues
Feedback experience sheets issued by the projects under construction to all the EDF EPR family members

EDF Group EPR Family Experience feedback: 1st examples
Solutions to solve construction difficulties at Flamanville 3 have already been implemented at Taishan with significant benefits on scheduling :
- Pouring of nuclear island slab in one shot- Reactor liner anchors and weldings- …
Operation documentation prepared for Flamanville 3 will be used for the future EPR plants
Licensing documentation and justifications used for several EPR projects (I&C, civil calculations, mechanical sizing, …)
19 - CNRA/WGRNR Workshop Prague 16/17 September 2010 -
Conclusion
Flamanville 3: An EPR first of a kind for EDF after 15 years without nuclear construction
Safety and construction quality stay the priorities of Flamanville 3 project
An efficient organisation set up to transfer experience among several EDF EPR projects worldwide from Flamanville 3
Good experience feedback on several construction practices already transfered to Taishan EPRs and the following ones that will allow to reduce the risks
