Each of you worked very hard making sure that you met with your assigned ETS program coordinator throughout the school year and we had record breaking attendance at each of our functions this year! In fact, this year our program has become so popular with you that we have had a waiting list to get into the program all year long. I want to thank Mr. Hendricks and Mr. Bates for recruiting outstanding participants this year. They have worked very hard to ensure that we delivered college preparatory information to all of our students in grades 7-12. Of course, we have to give a huge round of applause to the “glue” of our team, Mrs. Gonzalez. She is responsible for updating our website with current information, text messaging you all of our upcoming events, taking care of your transportation needs, and keeping track on our electronic data base each time you participate in one of our functions. In addition, this year, we have had incredible sup- port from our Lone Star College-North Harris administrators, President, Dr. Gerald Napoles and Interim Vice-President/Dean of Enrollment Services, Mrs. Carolyn Wade. They are absolute cheerleaders for this program and always sup- port the ETS team, our students, our parents , and TRiO! As I mentioned in our last newsletter, this partic- ular grant will expire on August 31, 2016. How- ever, with the awesome assistance of Lone Star College’s grant writing department; I have co- written a grant for another 5 years, 2016-2021. Because there are over 1,000 institutions apply- ing for this grant and only a lim- ited number of awards granted, The U.S. Department of Educa- tion will not notify me until late July or early August. In addition, The U.S. Department of Educa- tion added several new compo- nents to the grant competition. Some of the new recommended components are: (a) Focus more on preparing high school students for college entry, persistence, and success rather than mid- dle school students, (b) Add a mentoring com- ponent to the program where college faculty, staff and peers would be required to mentor high school students, and (c) Begin to track all graduating seniors through their college years to ensure that they graduate within the standard number of years from a community college or 4- year university. I will keep everyone abreast of when I learn of our refunding. The following schools have been chosen as participants for our 2016-2021 grant: Wunder- lich Intermediate, Nimitz 9th Grade School, Nim- itz High School, Westfield High School, and Klein Forest High School. Although Wells Inter- mediate and Klein Intermediate were not “officially” written into the upcoming grant; we will continue to provide services to those exist- ing ETS participants until they exit the 8th grade or they enroll in one of our partici- pating high schools. Summer is upon us and Houston is experiencing very hot temperatures. As you enjoy your summer break, please remember to stay hydrated, stay indoors, protect your skin from harmful sunrays, protect your pets from the sun, and assist your elderly neighbors. Greetings Talent Search Family,

I am so proud of you this year. Each of you

**REMINDER: PLEASE CALL OR EMAIL US IF YOU ARE NOT RECEIVING THE ETS EVENT NOTIFICATIONS**

2016 June Summer Leadership Academy

In addition, on the last day of the Academy the students went on an exclusive behind-the-scenes tour of the Toyota Cen-

ter in downtown Houston. They were able to see many of the different areas and features of the Toyota Center, includ-

ing the Arena Floor, Legends Locker Room, Rockets Luxury Club, Red & White Bistro, and Lexus Lounge. After the tour

the students had a nice meal at Lake House Houston - Discovery Green.

The Rising 7th, 8th, and 9th Grade Summer Leader-

ship Academy was an absolute success! The ETS students in

attendance were able to work on activities and hear from

presenters on the topics of goal setting, self-esteem, social

media and texting dangers, and many more. They also were

able to work on cool and innovative new machines and gadg-

ets such as the 3-D printers and Virtual Reality glasses in the

MakerSpace section of the LSC-NH Library.

I want to thank all of the presenters and facilitators

at this year’s June Leadership Academy. Also, a HUGE thank

you to all the parents of our students as well. If it were not for

all of you, we wouldn't be able to see your children and have

amazing events with them.
