Hansjakob Mller, a shareholder ofthe Renolit SE Supervisory Board, was proud to open a new calendarproduction line at Renolit CramlingtonLtd - a 5 million investment whichconfirms the Groups commitment tomanufacturing in the UK.

The new calendar converts rawmaterials (resin, stabilisers, pigments etc)into a pvc sheet, the basic raw materialused in the manufacture of Renolit's filmproducts. The installation took nearly ayear to complete, including laying newfoundations to stabilise the 31 metrelong machine. Once installed, themachine was fitted with the latestcontrol equipment enabling Renolit toproduce films to an accuracy of onehundredth of a millimetre.

This new machine, says Renolit, willenable the company to continue itsquest for supreme quality, wideningthe scope of products that can beproduced in Cramlington.

As part of the project, RenolitCramlington also completely refurb-ished a disused office block to createthe Northumbria Building, a state-of-the-art presentation area withconference and meeting facilities. Acustom-built Design Centre has beenincorporated at the heart of thebuilding to house a permanent displayof the company's products and providean impressive environment for businessmeetings and new product designpresentations.

Customers and suppliers are welcome to visit the site to see theimproved manufacturing facilities forthemselves and the Renolit team wouldbe delighted to lay on a productpresentation in the Design Centre. This is a story about an extraordi-nary company; a company whichis shaping the future in such adramatic and far-reaching way thatwithin a decade, panel processing aswe know it could be assigned to thehistory books, as out of step as a PennyFarthing in the race to Mars.

Imagine a factory without dust.Imagine machines that run almostsilently, without tooling, vacuum beds,or high energy consumption. Imaginejust-in-time, every time - right down to the bespoke pattern on the panel. Impossible? For sure, its not somethingGino Benuzzi could ever have imaginedwhen, back in 1945, he began strippingcomponents from the abandoned tanksthat littered the roadside of war-tornItaly and reconstructing them as wood-working machines. Yet his company,Giben - yes, Giben the saw manufac-turer - has taken the whole concept ofpanel processing and reinvented it. Andthe dream of CEO, Piergiorgio Benuzzi, his team and his new business partners isalready rolling out across world markets.

There are doubtless those who wouldpoint an accusing finger at Mr Benuzzisrecently-ratified alliances with routerspecialist, Anderson, and edgebandermanufacturer, Ellwood. But the alliancesare not short-term marriages of conve-

nience brought about by a downturn indemand. He could have expanded hiscompanys machinery portfolio easily byacquiring any one of several router man-ufacturers for a single Euro a few monthsback - but with more than a dozen mas-sive, multi-million Euro panel processingfactories being designed by the GibenSpecial Projects Division and installed inChina, there were more useful alliancesto be formed in Asia. Teaming up withAnderson was a shrewd move whichprovided Gibens software gurus with anopportunity to link high-tech Giben sawswith machining and edging processes -and manufacture all the software, lifts, board turners and transport systems tomake them work. At the same time,Gibens vision resulted in new tech-nology which could, within the nextdecade, see routers and machining cen-tres replaced by fast, high-efficiency lasercutters - and custom cabinets finishednot with foils but with inks from a UVinkjet printer. Anderson routers and UVinkjets have already been linked and areworking successfully in Southern Cali-fornia. Mr Benuzzi is convinced it will notbe long before router tooling (and thedust which comes from conventional ma-chining) becomes obsolete and lasers takethe place of machining heads. His com-panys search for an alternative to the

Giben is a company thathides its light under amountain, not a bushel, yet its a company that, through shrewd strategicalliances, is poised tointroduce revolutionarytehnology that couldchange panel processingfor ever.

The KERS system on Gibens Prisma 6000 saw usesbraking action of up to 5G from a saw carriage whichruns on linear guides to return up to 40% of the powerconsumed back to the machine.

    CEO, Piergiorgio Benuzzi

  • scoring blade on a beam saw has alreadyprovided the light at the end of thetunnel in the form of modestly-pricedretro-fittable laser heads.

Giben is no stranger to futuristic tech-nology. Its supremely efficient flagshipbeam saw, the Prisma 6000, paves theway with eerily silent pushers and a 600kilo saw carriage that floats along linearguides on magnetic power of 1000 kilos, accelerating through 5G to cut 15 cyclesa minute - and every time the saw car-riage brakes, a KERS system converts thebraking action into power, reducing itselectricity consumption by up to 40%.Construction is so simplified that wearand replacement parts are almost a thingof the past. Like its entry level babybrother, the Icon 1, the Prisma 6000 isgreener than a fir forest in Fyfe.

Robots run the factories Giben de-signs and robots make the difference in aGiben Edge, too. The remarkable KE03edgebander, badged Giben Edge, boastsa robotic system that perfects four cor-ners at once and a robotic scraper thatengages according to the corner radiusselected. The underside of the machineshows yet more revolutionary thinking -its an easily-cleaned open space. Allelectrics are housed in the cabinet at theend of the machine for ease of access. Each station can be selected and pro-grammed separately - and all settingscan be stored easily using a graphics dis-play that is simple, clear and concise.

Wander through the Giben factory inBologna and its hard not to be im-pressed with the genius of Giben. Along-side a new Prisma 6000 thats takingshape, a huge lift table towers over anew Giben-Anderson point-to-point. Theneed for precision has led Giben engi-neers to abandon hydraulics on the lift:electro mechanical systems are moreprecise and cope better with uneven

weight distribution. But perhaps just asimportantly - and this thinking runsthrough everything Giben does - a hy-draulic motor is always engaged, whereasthe electro-mechanical alternative onlyconsumes power when movement is re-quired. Even in power-hungry China, thedestination for this particular lift, the ad-vantage of energy-efficient factories isappreciated, it seems.

Despite a workforce of around 240spread across three continents, PiergiorgioBenuzzi considers his company to be aminnow among woodworking machinerymanufacturers. Its core business lies inthree divisions - Cut to Size, Edging andCNC - though its Special Projects Divisionis no stranger to turnkey factory and ware-house design and installation projects of 40million Euros and more (and lines of 120metres up). Thats some minnow. But per-haps the greatest surprise lies in Gibens di-versification into a Graphics Division. Handin hand with the development of lasertechnology, Giben and its partners havebeen working on printing machines thatwill print 1080 x 720dpi images onto prac-tically any substrate, organic or otherwise. At present, the technology can print at arate of 22m2 every hour. By August, theGraphics Division will present a machine inAtlanta that will top 40m2 an hour andeven print on offsets of up to 22mm deep(7mm without any distortion of the pat-tern). It can be run in line with a laser toproduce doors with square or roundededges, printed on the surface and edgesfor an ink cost of around one Euro ninetyper square metre. To complete the pic-ture, embossing heads will simultaneouslycreate real woodgrain reproductions onperfect printing. Now thats genius.

    10 FURNITURE JOURNAL MARCH 2012

Have you ever wondered if there was a better way, a faster way,or a more profitable way to manufacture the products whichcome out of your factory? Forward-thinking Giben is alreadyprepared for a future without the router...

Everyone wants to cut costs. Its acommercial necessity, especially inthese days of economic uncer-tainty. But, at the same time, customers are demanding greater flexibility from manufacturers, lowercosts, more custom-made product togive them a commercial advantage -and all without impact on quality. Present technology, while all the timeadvancing, can only deliver so much. The next step will have to be as visionary as it is revolutionary - and thebenefits would have to be massive forcompanies such as yours to switchfrom tried and trusted panel processingmethods, wouldnt they?

So consider this: Imagine if it were possible to pro-

cess panels without the need for dustextraction. Imagine never needing tosharpen, or, indeed, buy router toolingagain. Imagine the saving on energy ifyour machine only cost you when itwas cutting and didnt need the addi-tional consumption of a vacuumsystem. Now imagine switching fromone substrate to another at will - MDF,chipboard, wood, acrylic or whatever -without changing tools or needingmore than the briefest pause in theprocess. Imagine being able to cut themost intricate shapes, or the simplestof door designs, simultaneouslyetching surfaces - all with a half kilo

head that accelerates to 5G and ma-chines a panel in a fraction of the timeit takes a conventional router to do thesame job. And imagine all that withoutthe complexity of codes, yet withmore reliability and speed than anyrouter currently on the market. It maysound space age, unrealistic even, butin reality, its not as Dr Who as itsounds. The technology is alreadyhere, now. Prices are coming downand, according to the blue sky thinkersat Giben, whose boffins are pioneeringthe technology in the furniture sector,it wont be very long before savvy fur-niture manufacturers start buying intowhat the automotive industry hasbenefitted from for years: lasers.

Its already easier and faster tomake a door on a laser, says Gibensmanaging director, Giuseppe Riva. Hisbackground is automotive engineering. He marvels that no one, until Giben, has had the foresight, or the courage,to introduce proven, high-speed lasertechnology to the furniture industry. And, he continues, In an industrywhere the demand is for flexibility, effi-ciency, energy-saving and speed, thelaser fits perfectly.

At Giben, we see the manufac-turing of the future orientated aroundfewer machines in the process. With alaser, there is no dust because tooling istaken out of the equation. Only solid

trims from the original material are pro-duced and that has a positive impact onwaste disposal costs as well as on ma-chinery for extraction. A laser will cut upto 60mm easily, challenging our owntechnology in saws. A saw will only beneeded for books. Materials with deli-cate surfaces are becoming increasinglypopular and handling them can be aproblem. No vacuum is required to holdthe materials still while cutting with a

laser, protecting the materials and sim-plifying the design of machines of thefuture. Power consumption is reducedbecause lasers are either on or they areoff. Theres no standby. And if youwant to engrave, its possible to do thatat the same time on the one machine.

The laser will not replace every-thing, he admits, But it really scoreswhere complicated shapes are required,or the raw material cost is high.

As with any technology, when itsfirst introduced to an industry, the costis invariably high. How great the sav-ings on extraction, tooling, energy andso forth are when speed and reducedwaste are taken into account dependon individual processes but its almostcertain that benefits will be felt in flexi-bility, accuracy, speed and the space alaser occupies. And for those who maybe willing to sacrifice a little speed,

retro-fitting a laser head to an existingrouter or machining centre could pro-vide an acccepatable halfway houseuntil volume brings down cost. Laserheads can be bought for as little as12,000 Euros.

Now theres food for thought. To find out more contact Giben

  • Economies have crashed, marketshave tumbled, currencies have de-valued - but never has there been amore positive ZOW than ZOW 2012.Burgeoning aisles, broad smiles frombusy stands, hand shakes and deals pro-vided the hallmarks of an exhibition that, since the inception of the ZOW concept, has gone from strength to strength. And,it seems, the exhibitors were as delightedwith the response as the visitors were tosee new products and meet old friends.

So what were the trends for 2012?On the hardware side, drawers have

grown wider and slimmer, if a fractionshallower, thanks to undermountedslides. Soft close, soft open and smoothaction have become accepted as amarket, hungry for quality and ease ofassembly and adjustment, demandsever more from the main players. Theirinvestment in new products and newmanufacturing facilities ran into tens ofmillions of Euros.

Internal organisation, both ofdrawers and cupboards, and the opti-misation of space moved up a gearwith super-slick pull-outs on severalstands. At a more basic level, simple, repositionable, rubber-ended and mag-

netic dividers for cutlery drawers wereto be found everywhere.

Ergonomics was a word not oftenheard at this years ZOW, though theErgoAgent concept kitchen, with itselectrically-powered, rising-falling wall-mounted cupboards and islands, andactuator-driven spice racks, was wooingthe crowds on the Kessebhmer stand.

Handle designs ranged from sexy, tapered curves and flowing lines onItalian and Spanish stands to the out-right whacky for childrens rooms. But,generally speaking, the quality of finishon most stands was high.

The dcors industry has seen hugedevelopments in the last decade. Whereonce the emphasis was on definition, superlative printing quality and absoluterealism from all the main players, todaysuch standards are accepted as thenorm. Attention is being diverted in-creasingly to tactile qualities. Rememberthe first real forays into texture with apeachskin finish by Hornschuch? Remember Toppans ground-breakingsynchronised pore structures on foil?ZOW 2012 simply oozed tactile appealfrom every printed pore, such was thebreadth of finishes on wood-look dcors.

But will this years ZOW pave theway for a more optimistic industry? Ithink there is no doubt. It was a trulyinspirational show. Well done to all!

Schattdecors ZOW stand revolvedaround a theme of continuity inchanging times. The mottoreferred to Schattdecor's Pure Essence,Tomorrow's Souvenir and IndustrialHeritage trend themes, which it iscontinuing into the new season. Newcolour worlds and a new style haveemerged in the past year, lending thestyles a new signature look. All three -each reflecting an enduring interest inold traditions, values and craftsmanship- will be merging and converging to anincreasing extent in 2012/13.

Pure Essence offers simplicity, functionality and concentration onessentials, plus a concern withsustainability, quality and fine materials. The result is a pure, modern aesthetic.A mix of filigree elements and heavyforms is becoming more apparent, withclear lines and fine surfaces creating alight and aesthetic effect in this timelesslook. The colour concept in PureEssence is as reticent as the mutedmaterials, offering subtle hues of taupe, mud and greyish-brown. White andlight grey underscore the subtly sensualstyle, with greyish powdered pastelsaccentuating the harmonious colourpalette. The stone reproduction, Solino,is a typical example.

Tomorrow's Souvenir highlights theincreasing influence of the 50s and 60s.A rich mix of modern surface finishes, classical materials and vibrant colours

characterises Tomorrows Souvenir. Thewoodgrains are natural in colour, varying from pale, subtly greyed huesto glowing medium browns and shadesof dark brown. Accentuation isprovided by vibrant yellows, turquoise-blue, white and nuances of grey. Therustic Santana Oak dcor is typical ofTomorrows Souvenir.

Clear modern architecture sets thestage for the Industrial Heritage theme,in which antiques, treasured collector'sitems and worn-looking surfaces form ahomely atmosphere. Old and roughly-worked items no longer characterise thestyle alone. Contemporary materials anditems with traces of machining andvisible fittings are increasingly deter-mining the trend, as exemplified byrough-hewn worktables in stark contrastto upmarket brushed steel accessories.Patterns reminiscent of arts and craftstechniques lend a certain artisan charmto the theme. Dark woodgrain hues, black and sombre browns are much inevidence, contrasted by dark shimmer-ing blue and the industrial, metallic huesof iron and copper. Neon red accentspunctuate the technical feel of thistheme. The rustic Avalon Pinecharacterises this theme.

Four new dcors made their debutson the Interprint stand: Ocean Side (themain picture, above), Picard (left),Fonda Maple and Coast Line.

Picard, says Interprint, has what ittakes to be a best-seller. Its an oak witha brushed surface which includes darkcracks, knots and mirrors. Theres awhite negative pore effect, suggestingan aged and matured timber.

Claudia Hiepel is Renolits Munich-based designer. Touring the standat ZOW 2012, she points enthusi-astically to the main trends - 3d films;deep pore embossing; soft, muted uni-colours; and natural wood finishes.

There are two megatrends, she ex-plains. The first is deep embosses, suchas our latest innovation, Okasha, whichallows you to see and feel exactly thesame thing. Its based on a combinationof oak and ash pores and looks like realwood with wide-spaced rings. Thesecond megatrend is non colours; re-duced grey tones, greatly softenedtones, like in fog - and the fashion andcolour trends in the coming season willreflect the weather.

Renolit SEs Corporate Design Man-agement, together with the Frenchstylist RCM, has developed three newcolour concepts with the titles Fog &Snow, Wind and Rain.

There are no contrasts in fog and nosharp contours in snow, as if the world isviewed through a misted up glass, saysMonika Fecht, Head of Corporate DesignManagement. Ceramic and Putty(above) both belong to Fog & Snow.

The colour spectrum Wind offers analmost inexhaustible number of blue

tones from light to dark, weak to robust.Dark red tones such as Cranberry (right)provide contrasts with Lagoon (above).

Green tones define Rain with newvariants such as Fern and Stone pro-viding balance and contrast with har-monising wood dcors such as the newSwiss Elm (background picture) whichRenolit showed prominently at ZOW.

We are showing four new Elms, allcolour reduced, continues Claudia. Inrecessions, markets become frightenedand conservative. Colour reduced interiorslook valuable without being extreme.

Deep structures in wood dcors, such as saw-cut and brushed surfaces, imply a certain solidity; something tocling to in uncertain times, perhaps. Wehave several deep embosses on thestand. Oak remains popular, especiallywith our Sawcut structure.

But for those who are not afraid of alittle adventure, Renolits Cobra taps intothe new trend for irregular stripes andgeometric shapes in blues, beiges andgreens. Renolit has also introduced anew concrete structure, Moulins, withdiscreet block prints in cool colours.

  • Oak still leads the wayAlfa Foils Ltd has added a new 3d foil in an Oak wood grain to its UK stock range.

Made by the Italian company Alfatherm this print is an exclusive design co-operation with the board producer Egger and will be available in NaturalAragon Oak (Egger H1372) and Sand Grey Aragon Oak (Egger H1375). The

embossing structure used on this foil matches Egger ST22.The design has a very natural linear appearance but also has the interesting

characteristics of a more mature wood and can be used in a wide variety aroundthe home. Georg Styr of Alfa Foils believes that oak is still firmly established in the

market as the number one wood grain and that this new dcor is a very cleverfusion between the traditional and contemporary markets.

  • Daltons Wadkin see W12 as a major opportunity to promote theiractivities as a distributor and manufacturer of a wide range ofwoodworking machinery from both European sources and theirown manufacturing plant in the UK.

Director Alex Dalton was positive about both the opportunityand the timing of the show: In a currently uncertain economy onething that is certain is that W12 will take place in October and ourcompany will be a major part of it.

Whatever the market trends during 2012 Daltons Wadkin willbe in a position to meet with our expanding customer base and promote both Wadkinmanufacture and the high profile equipment for which we are UK distributors.

The show will also provide a further opportunity to highlight our expanding supportservices and training activities which are becoming increasingly important to our business.

In addition to the established machinery brands with which we are associated such asStenner, Salvador, Elcon, Altendorf, Kuper, etc, we shall be introducing further innovativeequipment new to the UK market and look forward to promoting these exciting products towhat we hope will be a receptive W12 audience.

    Above: Set of Hoffman keys.

Talking to both signedup exhibitorsand manufacturers planning to visitW12 Working with Wood and theparallel Working with Design shows, thereis already a sense of anticipation and evenimpatience to get into 2012 and getthings moving.

The W10 show underlined the strengthof the W events in times of economicuncertainty. Despite the 2010 backdropbuyers came to seek out new suppliers able to offer cost reductions or increasedbreadth of product and market. W12 looksset again to provide its well establishedlandmark boost to the market.

One trend or theme that constantlycrops up in discussions is the need forWorking with Wood to offer the broadestpossible range of machinery, solutionsand systems.

Kitchen and furniture manufacturerstell the W12 team that the upper end ofthe market is holding up well and inIreland the economic forecast is for growthof one per cent.

Very often this sector is served by thesmaller, niche but highly skilled specialists not companies that would necessarily beinvesting in large, high volume productionequipment.

These companies come to W12Working with Wood to seek out the latesthigh-tech but smaller solutions that willoffer their operations new advantages inflexibility, operating cost reductions andimprovements in final product quality.

Alongside the very large stands of thebig industrial machinery suppliers who,by the way, also offer a wide range of entrylevel options visitors will find the bestshop window for the smaller manufacturer.

Two such exhibitors are the AxminsterPower Tool Centre and the HoffmannMachine Company.

Axminster Power Tool Centre has takenon the UK agency for the top quality rangeof Italian manufactured Griggio machinesfor the small to medium sized workshop.Andy Cross, Head of Trade & CommercialSales at Axminster says that in thecontinuing tough economic situationmany companies are moving away fromhighly specified and over-priced machineryand instead are investing in good solidproducts that do the job.

Hoffmann has traditionally had one ofthe busiest stands at all the past Wexhibitions. This buzz of activity isgenerated by Hoffmanns famous dovetailkey jointing system which is so versatileand solution-providing that it is used in themost diverse cabinet and joineryapplications and in industries beyond.Small businesses across Britain using theHoffmann system will more often than nottell you they first saw it demonstrated atW6, 8 or 10!

Another fast changing section thataffects all manufacturers is that of energyand wood waste disposal. W12 Workingwith Wood will be the definitive event atwhich to explore and understand the fastmoving technology and legislation thataffects everyone. Mawera, Ranheat andInventair are just three of the specialistswho will be meeting with the industry inOctober. It becomes more important tomake a date at the NEC from October710 all the time!

  • Left: Cabinet maker Felice Iannone with the StriebigCompact at Manufacturing by Design.

Right: A reception area built by the Hertfordshire company fora London firm of architects.

striebigs compact solutionAhighly successful manufacturer ofhigh-end bespoke commercialfurniture has solved a bottleneckin its sizing operations with a StriebigCompact vertical panel saw.

The saw has also delivered moreaccurate sizing and better use ofworkshop space.

Manufacturing by Design createshand-crafted furniture for some of theUKs leading design and buildingpractices, commissioned for blue chipclients in the retailing, banking andhospitality sectors.

Managing director Tony Juchau setup the business in 1992. The companyhas expanded steadily since then, culminating last year in a move to9,300 sq ft premises in Berkhamsted,Hertfordshire. It has 20 employees, including eight highly skilled cabinetmakers.

Despite all the talk of gloom anddoom in the media, business is buoyantat the moment and we have a goodorder book, said Mr Juchau.

Amongst recent prestige jobs havebeen retail installations for Diptyque, the French perfumers and makers ofluxury scented candles, and the fittingout of Graff Diamonds new flagshipstore in Bond Street, London.

The company has also beencommissioned for installations inEurope, the Middle East and theUnited States.

It was because of the steady increasein demand for its work that a secondsaw was needed in the workshop.

We have a panel saw which wasnot able to cope with the increasingamount of sizing we needed to do onit, said Mr Juchau. As most of ourwork starts off with panel sizing, thiswas causing major problems furtherdown the line.

After deciding to invest in a secondmachine, Mr Juchau and workshopmanager Chris Lawley agreed that avertical panel saw would save onworkshop space.

From reading the trade journals wesoon realised that Striebig wasconsidered the bench mark to aim at,said Mr Juchau.

The two other manufacturers welooked at in addition to Striebig offeredcheaper machines but they were far lesswell-built and not as robust, said MrLawley. They were also not as simpleto set up, which is important as almostall of our work consists of one-offs.

They then talked to Striebigs UKagent, TM Machinery Sales, about whichmodel would be best for their needs.

TM suggested that a Compactwould do the job well, so I went to lookat one used at a local kitchen cabinetmaker, said Mr Lawley. Seeing itworking and listening to the positiveviews of the operators clinched our

decision to buy. Its amazingly accurateand cuts perfectly square every time, which is not the case with the panel sawwhich needs to be checked and resetfrom time to time.

Manufacturing by DesignsCompact 4164 sizes various sheetmaterials, mainly veneered boards andMDF, plus the occasional acrylic sheet, ranging in thickness from 19 to 38mm.

The machine is the smallest in thenine-strong entry level series with acutting range of 3100 x 1644mm(10ft x 5ft) and a maximum depth ofcut of 60mm.

Featuring automatic movingbacking support and with a powerful3.9kW motor, it has exceptionallyefficient integral TRK dust extractionthat surpasses current European healthand safety legislation.

Useful accessories chosen byManufacturing by Design included ascoring saw for laminates and a600mm strip cutter for repeat cuts.

Felice Iannone, one of thecompanys team of cabinet makers, saidmost of the panel sizing work is nowbeing done on the Striebig: As well asbeing simple to set up, we get a totallyaccurate cut every time and its fareasier to load the biggest panels on to itthan on to the panel saw. It has madepanel sizing much, much easier.

  • With Homag and SCM both nowproducing machines for theapplication of Rehau's Laser Edgeedgeband, a growing number ofcustomers are investing in the newtechnology because they feel it will givethem a competitive edge. One suchcompany is Northumberland based Browns2000 which is using an SCM Stefanimachine to apply Rehaus Laser EdgeMirror Gloss polypropylene edgeband on anew range of premium acrylic wrappeddoors that are branded Glacier.

The company chose Rehau Laser Edgebecause it could meet the very exactingspecification required for the new Glacierbrand. Feedback from customers hasalready been so positive that it is planningto expand the range. In fact, Browns 2000is so impressed with the Laser Edge conceptthat it is also investing in a second newedgebanding machine from SCM whichwill have interchangeable applicationsoffering both Laser and PUR options.

Rehaus Laser Edge technology offers agenuine alternative to traditional hot meltadhesive delivering a perfect finish andno visible glue line, which cancompromise board performance. As thename suggests, Laser Edge uses a laserwelding process in place of conventional

hot melt adhesive to deliver a seamlessmoulded look. The standard adhesiveapplicator inside the machine is replacedwith a highly efficient laser which meltsthe lower polymer layer of the co-extruded Raukantex Laser Edge edgebandand enables it to bond seamlessly to thesubstrate.

The success of the original RaukantexLaser Edge edgebands in polypropyleneprompted Rehau to expand the rangewith new materials and more dcorvariants and it now includes the ABS andPMMA polymers. This means it can beused with Rehaus premium edgebandssuch as the Mirror Gloss being run byBrowns 2000, Magic 3D and Impressions, offering a wider range of striking textures, colours and finishes.

Rehau has produced a newinformation pack for manufacturersinterested in finding out more about LaserEdge. • Anew Galaxy beam saw has beenadded to the constellation of SCMGroup machines at Idess Retail, aHarlow-based company that deliverssolutions to the retail, commercial, banking and leisure markets. ProductionManager, Tim Harper, comments, "Withan existing beam saw and a wall saw,we were experiencing capacity issues, sowe decided to install an additional beamsaw, as our business is continuously onthe increase, and we are currentlyworking 24/7. A new Gabbiani GalaxyT3 110A 45 beam saw (main picture, above) was delivered and installed inAugust 2011.

The Galaxy has a 4500mm cuttingwidth capacity and a rear panel liftingand feeding system (fed by poweredrollers) that is loaded with a pack ofboard by fork lift. The panels areautomatically pushed off the board stackby pushers on the saw's rip fence, whichruns on THK guides, and onto the sawsrear table, where they are pushed againstaligning stops located in the table.Clamps on the rip fence grip the panelsas the aligning stops disappear, then trimbefore successive rip cuts are carried out.The rear table is fitted with largediameter nylon wheels that reducefriction on the panels, eliminatingchipping and damage.

The cut panels are fed onto a series offront air flotation tables that can be

positioned easily to suit the operator. Asthe rip fence and clamps retract to therear of the machine, the panels are easilyturned through 90 degrees forsubsequent trimming and cross cutting. An automatic side aligner, with a1200mm stroke, pushes the panelsagainst the cross cut fence ensuring thepanels are perfectly square.

The Galaxy has a pressure beam witha new mechanical design providing ahigher, more uniform pressure on thepanels, with optimum extraction ofshavings and sawdust and easymaintenance. Also included is aninnovative saw blade carriage withelectronic lifting running on THK guides. The optimised blade stroke and pressure

beam stroke reduce any unnecessarymovements that cost valuableproduction time. The saw carriage andblade run on prismatic guides.Maximum rigidity and perpendicularmovement of the blade with respect tothe stack of panels reduce friction andwear on the materials even at thehighest running speeds.

Electronic setting of the scoring bladeis fast and the exact adjustment of thescoring blade is by means ofelectronically driven motors, accordingto the values set by the operator with thePC. The main saw motor is 25HP anddrives a blade with a 110mm projection. The saw carriage speed is up to 165metres/min and the pusher speed is 95-120 0metres/min. A label printer (insetpicture) is located by the programmingstation for bar code printing.

The Galaxy's PLC takes care of therunning of all the machine devices. Themanagement software Wincut, operating in a Windows environment, has been especially developed byGabbiani and is easy to use.Optimisation software offers a maximumnumber of 30 lines per programme with500 pieces per line and four controlledcut levels. The cutting cycle is shownwith three-dimensional simulation andproduction reporting is automatic.

Btfering is adding a new seriesthat falls between its 300 and 100models of wide belt sander. Logi-cally called the SWT 200, these are de-signed to suit the requirements ofsmall to medium size shops at a veryattractive price/value ratio.

With a sanding belt length of2150mm, the range is compact and of-fers a choice of between one and threesanding heads controlled via a Touch-screen terminal. Built according tostrict quality standards, the new 200 se-ries has it all, says Ingemar Bauersfeld, the company's product manager. With constant passline a standard fea-ture, longer and heavier parts are moreeasily handled; and with a frequency in-verter drive to the final sanding head, the machine becomes suited to lacquersanding applications as well as calibra-tion and veneer. Additional space isprovided for structuring or partcleaning accessories, if required.

At the Nrberg show, a cross sectionof the Btfering "toolbox" will be ondisplay. The patented X-head will beone of the Highlights, as it combines

This choicegives even a single head machinetremendous flexibility and brings themany advantages of using chevron beltsanding within reach of smaller manu-facturers. These, say Btfering, includethe ability to use much finer sandingbelts for preparation of high gloss, andthe elimination of oscillation lines.
