Dedicated to my parents, who, though no longer with me physically are always there in thoughts and spirit.

And to my sisters, who kept me going from time to time and always being there for me both in happiness and not so happy moments.

To my wife who is the effervescence in the house and to my destructive but extremely boisterous sons, who seem to be fizzing endlessly!

Last, but not the least to all my students and listeners who have sat thru my sessions/ talks over the last several years and have always put their hands together to keep mey inspired and motivated….Fizzing!

Dear Friends,

Firstly, a very warm welcome to you, the reader of this book !Let me give you a little bit of a background before I jump into the forewordfor this book…

When Venki asked me to write a foreword for his book, I was honoured. Ifirst met Venki at a leadership talk in Bangalore and I remember beingreally impressed by him. He seemed very down to earth and full of anindefinable energy I guess that must be the fizz that he so emphasisesupon.....

This book is about “Staying Alive” and I have always been intrigued abouthow speakers like Venki keep a room full of audience engaged and excitedfor hours by speaking !

I did ask him though, and u know what he said, “Reena, frankly, it’snothing compared to what you do out there”…

This book by Venki is on awakening the Gen-Y and motivating them tobuild a great future. The book talks about inspiring oneself and stayingempowered. As you will see, Venki has worked on the “FIZZ” conceptand explained throughout the book about the concept, with practical reallife scenarios and how to keep it alive.

To borrow his words, “FIZZ is the invisible force in all of us that takes usthrough every moment conscious and wakeful moment of our life, be itprofessional, social, personal or your own secret self.”

FOREWORD

Page 12: Fizz

With no FIZZ, the moments in a day would seem a drudgery, a heavyweight hanging on your shoulders to be cast away at the drop of a hat. Inshort, each moment in a day, from the mundane to the most excitingseconds of your life are not enjoyed or experienced in full if we don’t havethat vital ingredient in us namely FIZZ.

As he says, “To make life as LIFE we need FIZZ all the 60 seconds of aminute and all the hours of our waking day.”

I like his idea of the FIZZ very much and personally believe in it to a largeextent. Infact, I feel that there are some things that are mentioned in thisbook that can be applied to my life too. Though I am a mountaineer andout in the nature all the time, some of his examples are so easilyapplicable, it leaves you wondering why did you not implement it in yourlife?

I was impressed by Venki’s conviction to bring about a difference andmake an impact on the Gen-Y. This is so essential as they are the oneswho will take our society into the next generation !

I am aware that there are similar books available today in the market placeand on book shelves in book stores, but I can tell you one thing, this booksurely touched me by its simplicity and ability to get along in commonlanguage what is important to you and me. Venki has never attempted toimpress you with his Language prowess or 10 letter words that you canbarely pronounce, he has taken extra care to ensure that the book is easilyread and understood by people from all walks of life.I have always seen youngsters pick up a book, read a few pages and then it goes back on the shelf, or they never even open the book as it is 400-500 pages thick…But this one is not, it probably runs into just over a hundred pages, and makes it really interesting to read.

Page 13: Fizz

We all have the desire to become successful, achieve big, make a dent, etc.but frankly most of us do not take even that first step towards it. We getvery easily disillusioned and disenchanted by the realities of life that hityou. I can tell you this since I have been through these on everyexpedition in my life !

So, it is important that we understand and digest this book from apractical angle and use it to make that difference in our lives….I believethat even if we take the points Venki has mentioned in his book and applyit on a daily basis or weekly basis in our life, we will start seeing thechanges. I tried one or two of them myself and have seen the results….We have to make an attempt to “Stay Alive” to move ahead in this world and achieve our dreams. .

Now, entrepreneurs stand out as a rare breed because of their undividedattention towards perfecting the art of the change, intently listening to thevoice of the change: the idea.

So what is Fizz all about ? It is a great idea ! What is the secret recipe thatwill make you explode and jump out of your couch into the big beautifulworld ? And what is the secret recipe used to instill that “Fizz” into yourblood stream and continue the flow in our entire life span…Read thisbook to find out more….This is what “Fizz” is all about.

In this book, Venki holds your hand and guides you through the journey ofFizz by quoting simple examples that are faced by you and me in our dailylife.

He talks of simple instances, including quoting a real Bollywood star(who unfortunately is not amongst us) who has always been known forhis spiritedness. The first two chapters are very easy to read and raiseseveral questions in your mind and as you keep reading, the book hasmanaged to drag you into the beautiful world of “Fizz”.

Page 14: Fizz

He asks several questions and I would urge you to find answers to thequestions raised in the book and use it as a exercise book ! How do youget that Fizz into your life and kick off every morning and get ready toface the world with a big wide smile on your face !We are all alike….

We all have big ideas, want to do big things, want to conquer the worldetc…B ut how many of us really get out there and are willing to crack thewhip. A few of us who do attempt that, are easily disheartened by therealities of life and get back ot the bench…

I am sure portions of this book would fill you with the”potion” you needto move your life into the next gear !

Once you have done that, you are now ready for the next step……Justfollow the exciting path that Venki has set out for us, gulp the Fizz orinject yourself with it and ride into the glorious future that awaits you.

I am sure, like me, you will also be relieved and wanting for more whenyou finish reading this book.

Enjoy reading !

Fizzilyyours !

This book essentially is directed at the younger generation of today, orGen Y. Over the last decade or so, in my interaction with students, executives and people from different walks of life, from differentengineering colleges, from management schools across India, I havenoticed that India is depending heavily on “You” i.e. the Gen-Y. Likesomebody has said very beautifully, “With great authority, comes greaterresponsibility”

I don’t notice in them an overflowing sense of inspiration and motivationthat facilitates long term goal-achieving, decision making, all purposemorale and most importantly the fire or the desire to achieve more. Thisbook is a humble attempt to awaken this fire, to uplift the spirits of theproductive youth,

Remember……………….It is the Best of TimesThe Golden EraAge of Everything !Life full of PlentyThere is nevera problem of resourcesIt is “Age of So Much….”It will neverbe “Have and Have-Nots”, it will be “Want-Not’s”“Choice” is the Mantra of the Day / Week / Month, etc……..”

During the last 10 years (decade), I have been fortunate enough to get achance to deliver talks to tens of thousands of students across the breadthof this country @ institutions, colleges, schools etc.

PREFACE

Page 20: Fizz

As I would enter every hall or lecture room and then start speaking to theaudience, one of the immediate things that would strike me is the “Lack ofEnergy” in the room, which is a direct reflection of the lack of energy in thestudents’mind and body and also the institution itself.

This always led me to thinking and wondering as to why the Gen-Y, orteens + or twenty somethings’, who have the world at their feet and live inan “Era” of “I can have anything”, lack this energy. This really meant thatmore often than not, it would take me the first few minutes to UPthe energy levels in the room.

As we all know, an “AWAKE” mind is more prone to listening than a“Dull” mind…The one thing that also struck me was that this ambience inthe room remained similar, whether it was @ ‘launch of a session’ time,‘standard lecture series’, ‘orientation’, etc.

“FIZZ” will talk about how all of us have this intrinsic quality and canbring it out and keep it flowing at all times.

“FIZZ” not only talks about the quality in-built in all of us, but it also talksabout how we can bring it out and most importantly, how to keep it flow-ing at all times, ultimately leading to a great energy filled life.

As you start practicing some of the steps or the methods outlined in thisbook, your mental state will immediately begin to improve and will putyou in a state of ‘ A-ha’. !!! (atleast that is my sincere endeavour)

Page 21: Fizz

There are a lot of people and forces that have been responsible for me be-ing able to bring this book out…Some special ones are :-

The Universe for keeping me ‘Alive’ and in this high energy state of mind for as long as I have known, so a huge thank you to the Uuniverse

Anu, my wife for being my sounding board and also willing to listen to some of the ideas I would keep bouncing off

To my Academician friends who encouraged me to go ahead and complete this book as soon as they read the first chapter, so thank you dear friends

To Dr. S Krishnamurthy, an unbelievably positive personality, who leaves you wondering where all his energy comes from all the time ! He has been an inspiration.

To Reena Dharmashaktu, someone whom I call a friend now, and who so very kindly agreed to write the foreword for this book. Thank you Reena.

To Anitha, a very good and dear friend, and who is always motivated and charged up, no matter what the situation. Thanks to Anitha, who has designed this book and made it look so much more appealing and reader worthy. Thank you very much Anitha.

To Rina Gosar who is the creative brain behind my caricature on the front cover page of my book, so thank you Rina. Thanks for making me look bet-ter on the caricature!

ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS

Page 22: Fizz
Page 23: Fizz

This is indeed a wonderful time to be alive and at the age that you are allliving in and to be your age….Cant ask for more !!!

There have never been more possibilities and opportunities that I canremember in any era….You, the Gen-Y are today flooded withopportunities and immense possibilities in every area of your life, be itacademics, social, career or other areas. The problem is not this…theproblem is that you are spoilt for choice. I recollect a small thing my momused to say….When I would stand in front of a cupboard and look for ashirt or t-shirt to wear, she would say, “Venkatesh, sometimes it is best thatyou don’t have choices, then that way you end up wearing or leveraging onwhat you have”.

Today, you have the enviable option of actually looking at all options, sitting down and then doing a pros and cons sheet and then choos-ing which way to go. When we went to college or university, there were broadly three or little more choices…

You either chose Arts, Science, Commerce as a career option or youdecided to go with Engineering/Medical, period……

I am sure you will all agree with me on this one. You are in this placetoday, (and you could be either in a college or university…) after you wentthrough a few options and then considered to be here…Right ?

INTRODUCTION

Page 25: Fizz

Why then do we all not achieve what we have set out to ?

Why do we fail to accomplish our goals or objectives ?

Why then do we feel like a failure on some days ?

Why do we feel on some days (turns out most in a lot of cases), that Iought to be doing something else…I should neverhave been here ?

Why do Why do we fall short of ourown expectations ?

These and many more questions keep popping into our heads everymorning orwhen we are sipping a cup of coffee….Don’t they ?

Why ? Why ? Why ? Why ?...................

These and many more of these questions that you have in your mind willget answered (hopefully) as you go through this book.

I would recommend that you pause on lines or topics you feel are close toyou and make notes. One of the things that I do quite often while reading is to keep a highlighter and highlight those areas that I feel are important or will be useful for me to refer later.

Page 29: Fizz

It is 7 am and my alarm goesof….’Trrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr…….iiiiiiiiinnnnnnnnnnnnnnnggggggggggggggggggg’…………………………Ouch, that hurts….

I wake up, slowly make my way to the refrigerator and open the door and Ifind Coke bottles in different sizes…..200 ml, 300 ml, 500 ml, 1 litre, 2litre etc……

Which one do I pick up ? and uncork ?

I decide on picking the 200ml bottle and pop it open…..No Fizz…..Thatsstrange, I tell myself…Acoke, or for that matter, any carbonated beveragebottle is expected to fizz out…

So I then pick up a 300ml bottle to realize that the fizz is missing in this onetoo…I then go for the 1 litre, unscrew it and unfortunately, no fizz heretoo….

I then open different bottles, but no fizz in any of them…..”Coke Cokeeverywhere, not a bottle to “FIZZ”………Doesn’t it remind you of afamous clichéd line !!!

I look around to find that I am suddenly surrounded by opened bottles ofall sizes, fully flat lying around……completely phizzzzed out….Now I am getting desperate and uncorking or opening bottles one after the other…..but no luck……

I scream out loudly and while I am just about to fling a bottle that I amholding in my hand, I wake up with a fright”……………..

Thin beads of perspiration on my forehead, which is unnatural duringwinter and especially when you are in one of the colder places inIndia……Does this sound familiar…..No !..........

You may want to ask me, “But all bottles do not contain fizz, so then whatdo we do?”.

So I am here to tell you, “Ask a Teenager”….What does he do when herealizes there is no fizz in the bottle, or “What does he normally do beforehe pops open a carbonated beverage bottle?”…..

………………………………………………………………..…………………………………………………….………………………………..……………………

Thinking…………………..Let me tell you……………………..He shakes the bottle up and down and then pops it open…and guess what ?……..Yes, you see the beverage fizzing out……..gushing out……….

Yes………..Trust me my friends, there is…..

If you have not been able to discover it for so long, then I am sure, wellatleast very hopeful, that you will find how to uncork or pop it by the timeyou finish reading this book.

My dear Friends, Boys and Girls……….

All of us have “Fizz” in us……Period….Let not any one of you haveabsolutely any doubt about it….If you have, then feel free to reach out tome and I will pop it out for you……

How much ‘Fizz’, you may ask ?

I am going to say, “Enough to last us a lifetime”…

Alot of us, I would say, lead our lives, going through the motions….You,the younger generation, Gen-Y…are stepping into the world, you areeither pursuing your undergrads or MBAor engineering or graduation oryour bachelors etc., but the fact is that, I see a lot of you, already in your“Phizzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz”state (Phizzzzz to be read asPhisssssssssss….like a balloon when air is being let out)

Wake up my friends ! “Jaago Mohan Pyaare”.and for the girls out there,“Jaago Radha Pyaari”, ….”Jaago aur Jaagte Raho”.

life..You are still on your first step…Time to unpop your ‘Fizz’. You couldeither be a 200ml or a 300ml or a litre or even a 2 litre, but you to need to“Fizz out”……

Wake up every morning with a smile on your face and look forward totaking your day on…! Enjoy the nature……Does not matter if you are notan early rise….there is always so much in nature to enjoy, whatever timeyou get up….Nature has something to offer to everyone throughout theday/night…..and Never runs out of stock…..

So, here is what I would like you to do…..please………………………

“Wake up in the morning (‘morning’ to be read ‘till noon’) ,

Look ‘Skywards’ (not the Emirates Flying returns program, for all youUAE teenagers !) ….and then tell yourself,

“What a beautiful day, I am going to have a great day ahead and I lookforward to Today with a lot of excitement…Once you say this and thestatement leaves your lips, you will feel the energy levels as in “Fizz” risein you….

Once this is done, hopefully, your bubbles start moving around….Havethey already ? What are you looking around for ?

Do you get bubbles movement in your inside ?

Do I hear you say “Yes”…………Great stuff……..

Now, remember that you have to keep this bubbly movement alive !Bubble.. Bubble.. Bubble... Bubble…………

This will set the path for a great day ahead…Remember, until and unlessyou get this bubbly movement kicked off, the “Fizz” revolution cannotstart or will not start…

17

POP YOUR FIZZ

Page 40: Fizz

Chapter 2 : “There is always a lot of ‘FIZZ’ in all of us!”

Page 41: Fizz

So, you may ask me, “What happens when we go to sleep and wake up?”Where are the bubbles ?

I am saying, the bubbles are there all along, but not ‘Bubbling’ and thankgod for it…..atleast you don’t want it bubbling while you are sleeping

This is exactly what happens to us, there is a fizz waiting to guzz out frominside, but most of us fail to keep the bubbly movement alive and as aresult, the fizz lies dormant and does not know how to come out…Hasforgotten to Fizz you might say !

Even a Ferrari or Lamborghini needs to start @ zero to touch top speed of100 kmph in 3-3.5 seconds……

Keep your engine revving…..Vrrrrrrroooooooommmmmmmmmm…

So that you are ready to go when the time is right……

“Keep Bubbling”

It is imperative to get your bubble movement kicked off every morningwithout fail….This will atleast ensure that you are on your way to poppingthe Fizz.

Chapter 3 : POP IT UP

Page 45: Fizz

Now that you have the Bubbly effect kicked off, its time for us to move onand get started….

How do you get the popping effect started ?

How do you get the Fizz to pop up ?

I was speaking to a batch of over 150 bright MBAstudents at a prestigiousManagement institute in the country and posed the following questions tothem :-

1) What does FIZZ mean / signify or denote to you ?

Answers I got were :-1) Fizz = Energy2) Fizz = Appy (the juice drink)3) Fizz = Love4) Fizz = God5) Fizz = Water6) Fizz = Dead person (!!!), When I probed this further sinceI, as much as you thought, was a strange expression, this student verybenignly said, “Sir, when a person is dead, his fizz has run out”….

So, as you can see from the above, the minds of our futuregeneration…Strange though some answers maybe, it is their perspectiveand what came to their mind.

Mind you, they were asked to write down what came to their mind as soonas I mentioned the word. Essentially then, the students had all of 10-15seconds to write what came to their mind when I mentioned the word“FIZZ”.

23

POP YOUR FIZZ

POP IT UP

Page 46: Fizz

24

Chapter 3 : POP IT UP

Page 47: Fizz

This is exactly how our mind works too… Mind you, same environment, same batch, same classroom, same teacher(that is me !), same college, same auditorium, same floor, same..same…same…..What was differentthen ?

What was different was the “Inner Quotient”….Each of us has a innerquotient and each one of our inner quotient is different from eachother….No two inner quotient are the same, though we could be havingsame feelings at the same time sometimes…..

Essentially, our “FIZZ” works exactly the same way. Let us assume all ofus are packed in 300ml bottles…….Though all of us come in the samesize pack, why is it then that when the bottle is popped, the same amountof fizz does not flow out…Infact, for some of the packs, the fizz isabsolutely absent !!!!

The reason my friends is because, somewhere along the way, journey ofour life, we have forgotten how to LIVE LIFE ! We tend to go about ourday to day life with as much interest as each of us like eating “BitterGourd”…Though I must confess some of us like bitter gourd or “Karela”(not to be read as “Kerala” as in the southern state), as it is popularlycalled in most parts of India, the fact of the matter remains that “Karela” isbitter and that is why it is called “Bitter Gourd”. You will never find“Karela” sweeter in Kerala or more bitter in Tamil Nadu or slightlypungent in Uttar Pradesh etc…It is bitter and stays bitter..

25

POP YOUR FIZZ

Page 48: Fizz

26

Chapter 3 : POP IT UP

Page 49: Fizz

So, the question is…

”How do we get the Fizz oozing out of us everytime we pop the bottle orpop open the cap….Answer is very simple….follow these steps :-

1) Keep Smiling

(yes, sounds so easy, have you tried it….please do…), if you are able tokeep smiling a complete day irrespective of what you have been doing orupto, put a tick on your journal and write to me……..

2) Stay Alive….

Yes I know all of us are alive…But have we not seen dead bodies walkaround us everyday..I see them almost everyday, infact in dozens, inorganizations, on roads, in malls, retail outlets, etc. Just to explain, theseare living organisms (called humans) who walk around listlessly !!!!

3) Bring alive the Child in you…….

Yes, thank god u remembered that you were a child when you wereborn…..All of us were…Right! Then where did we lose the child in us or the spirit to live…….We used tobe engaged in such beautiful things that we forget them as we growup…Just to share a few that you can reflect on and pause….

Laughing

Crying– Who says crying is bad…More on this topic later

Not scared of anything – Do you remember ever being scared ofanything when you were a child…I can hear some of you say, “Yes”…..Iused to be scared of the dark…and I am here to tell you straight in yourface that you were NOTscared of the dark…Somebody at home told you,“Don’t go there it is dark”…

One statement that a lot of us would remember…..” (your mom calling outyour name and then following it up with…..if you don’t eat fast then I willput you in the room and switch off the light”…. :)

Reminds me of a friend’s daughter…This very close couple friend of ours, who live in Dubai have an extremely cute daughter by the name of “Aditi”.I still watch in awe when all of us would be sitting in the living roomtalking and suddenly either we will tell her to bring something or she willremember something she has to show me…..She would walk into anotherroom, which was away from the living room, not even bother whether thelight is on or off ; mind you, it used to be pitch dark ; pick up her stuff andcome back strutting into the room… and I always wondered how comeshe did this without even once bothering about the darkness thatenveloped her or that place…Then realized that from childhood she hasalways been like that…I am also very glad that the parents have not toldher “it’s dark, don’t go in there”…..I don’t know if they have alreadybroken that in the last few months…………

This is so true, is it not ? We have all been conditioned from childhood tobelieve and not believe in some things, instances, people etc… and I amsure all are for a valid reason, but …………..

Asking Questions

Putting yourhand upWhen was the last time you put up your hand up for a question that theteacher or guest faculty asked in your class ?

Don’t remember ? How will you ? Because maybe you never did…Ofcourse, there would be one odd girl (yes Girl in most of the cases !,) out ofa class of 100 plus students..

ScreamingWhen did you last scream your lungs out for anything ? Don’tremember…….Well, let me share with you something that happened tome very recently….

I met one of my batchmates when he came into the city I was staying in and we met for lunch….Mind you, we were meeting after about twentyyears…..and when I saw him,

I screamed out loud saying, “Anand……my man, how the hell have youbeen and you look so……….{rest has been edited for the youngeraudience :)}.

Let me also share with you another example….

I live in a city called “Bangalore”, which goes by the name of“Bengaluru” and it is no secret that traffic in this city takes the cake….That day was a not so good day and I was driving back from work and tomove a few metres, it took me a few minutes, so much so, that at aparticular stretch where there are two signals barely 500 metres from eachother, it took me about 15-20 minutes and finally when I was just planningto clear the second one, I got the Red light again and I had tostop……..This was when I totally lost it and pulled the window down andscreamed out loud…..

Yes, you are right, people around me thought I had lost it….But they wereright….. :)

I am not saying these are the best examples, you are free to design yourown examples and share them with me over email, and I will print it in mynext book

Jumping up and downYes, you read right…I said JUMPING as in “Koodna” (in hindi), alsomeans ”Uchchalna”……Try it, it’s a great feeling…Do it few times aday…..We pay money, go to the Gym and do it…I am saying, Just do itfew times a day in college, at home, while you are walkingetc….Ofcourse, don’t jump while you are watching a movie etc…or whileyou are inside a bus or cab etc…..

Like I say, “Jee kholke koodlo”(read ‘d’ as ‘the’ and not ‘dee’…meaning“Jump to your heart’s desire !”

LollipoppingYes, it simply means treating yourself to a nice sweet Lollipop and suckingon it oblivious to the world…Wow, What a feeling…

Let me share with you an incident that happened with me a few monthsback….I decided to treat myself to a lollipop…So I went to a nearby shopand bought a lollipop..

When I was getting ready to bill, there was a lady next to me, who saw itand asked, “for your son”…I said NO, for me…..She took a few secondsto recover….By which time I had left the shop….

Wait, its not over…I came out and then unwrapped the lollipop and start-ed sucking on it….This was a nice shopping area in Gurgaon and trust me, I had almost everybody looking at me and giggling to themselves…I canbet you that some of them thought, “Poor guy, has lost his marbles”……?

These are the same people who will look at a kid eating a lollipop and say,“So cute”….I can imagine I don’t look when I am sucking a lollipop, butcome on it can’t be all that bad…..Try this….

As soon as you finish reading this paragraph and if it’s an earthly hour, please step out and buy yourself a lollipop and start eating it immediately.I promise you, the satisfaction that it brings you will be unbelievable….Will probably be like the guys who behave the way they do in the 5 Star choco-late advertisement, that most of us must have seen….

My suggestion is to make a list of the above things that I have listed whichwe have surely done when we were(??), a child……Write this down andput it up in a place where you can see it…Make sure you have done all of itat least once a day. Some of them have to be constantly in progress…..Like Laughing…But then there are things like Jumping, which I would strongly urge you not to continuously do…because it may give a wrong impres-sion….

Please don’t lose your child in you…I am not saying ”Behave like akid”….They are two different things, I am only saying, “Be like a child”,bring out the child in you my dear friends…..Life will be fizzing all overagain…Try it…I run a money back scheme on this….Like they say,“Nahin chala to paisa vaapis”……

Chapter 4 : POUR OUT YOUR FIZZ EVERYDAY

Page 61: Fizz

Today is 3rd December 2011. It is ironic that while I am writing a book on“Fizz” and urging you to live your life to the brim and pour out your Fizzeveryday, I get to hear of the unfortunate demise of the one and only “DevAnand”…Dev Saab as he was popularly called truly lived a FULL Lifeand if I may add, a “FIZZ FILLED life”. We always remember Dev Anandto be a full of life person and who continued to live it to the brim every dayof his life. He was one persona who not only believed in saying that weshould life life to the fullest, but he also showed us how to live it…I reallyadmire him and would like to pay my respects to his departed soul….

Dear Dev saab, I am sure you have inspired a few thousands atleast backon earth to live life to the fullest and believe in your principle.

You may ask me, How do I pour out my Fizz everyday and I am going tostep back and tell you to re-read Chapter 1 and 2, and then come to this…..

You can only pour out your Fizz if you have created it and are constantlygenerating it…Pouring out your fizz does not mean that you wake up inthe morning, brush your teeth and then say “Aaaahh” “Thooo”…NOplease……

What I am trying to say here is to continue the pouring out everytime youmeet somebody, everytime you interact with somebody, etc….Visualise aFountain vending machine and everytime you open the tap, the beveragecomes gushing out…Imagine there is no end to the supply…

Chapter 4 : POUR OUT YOUR FIZZ EVERYDAY

Page 63: Fizz

To be in a position to continue to Fizzing out throughout the day, you needto have created enough fizz inside of you…So, start at the beginning, Kickstart your day to a great start, every day……

Start everyday telling yourself that “YOU” are the best thing tohappen….Thank the Universe or Almighty for what you are !Like I say, “the fact that we are alive every morning is a miracle in itself…”Let us acknowledge this fact and make a stupendous beginning….Nothingshort of this will do.

Once you have done this, then the rest is easy…You just have to pour outyour fizz at every interaction and then put the lid back on…You meetsomeone new, again uncap and Fizz out…..Keep doing this…

Truly Dev Anand was a man who lived young and got Younger as he spentmore years on Mother Earth and finally when he left for his heavenlyabode, he was the youngest of them all….Truly a Gen-Y……

Lots of people have written lovely articles and memories of Dev Anand, and the one thing that runs common among all of them is that, he truly wasa man who never grew old and always lived young…Rarely, do you comeacross people with so much zest in life.

I would rate him as a great example to emulate and draw inspiration from, a source in whom you constantly found energy and the Fizz alwaysflowing…

I am sure there was no secret formula to the way he lived his life..If you askhim, he would probably say, “I lived life the way I wanted to and woke upevery morning with a smile on my face and a spring in my steps”.

FIZZY DAD/ SON

Imagine a house where you have a fizzy Dad…Wow, kya mazaa aayega!!!(as in, how much fun will it be?). The Dad will always be charged up,energetic, new ideas, etc.etc.

Imagine the same with the son..Fizzy son ya daughter ke kya kehne…Itwill be “Wah Kya Baat Hai” all the way, as in “Fun all the way”..

The boy or girl will be all over the place, laughter, chirping, jumping, giggling, sharing jokes, pulling each others’ legs. Imagine a scenariowhere the four people in a family are sitting at a dining table, Fizzy Dad,Fizzy Mom, Fizzy Son and Fizzy daughter….What a Dinner it will be !!!No, I am not talking about the dishes on the table, but I am referring to thedish makers seated at the table.

Imagine a conversation between Dad and Son, what a delight it willbe...There will be awesome chemistry and you can see electricity flowbetween them. You agree ?

If the same is missing, then it would not be fun..And there are days when itwill be so and you can notice the immediate change in the energy levels athome, in the conversations, etc..

A Dad and son’s Fizzy relationship is very interesting…When the son isyoung, the Fizz is pretty much smooth flowing and it comes out like adream, as most of the times, the son listens to the father.

When the son starts growing up, and is entering his teens, the fizz is stillthere, but this time it really starts “Fizzing”…if you know what I mean…

Page 71: Fizz

The son is in a mood to challenge and question the father’s directions oractions !!! Generation Gap is a word we are all familiar with !

When the son grows up even more and reaches beyond teenage and intohis twenty something, then the fizz starts going back into the bottle, orwhere it came from .

I cannot emphasize how important it is to retain the fizz throughout..It isthe Fizz that will keep the relationship going…..

FIZZY BOYFRIEND/ GIRLFRIEND

Now here is an interesting one…..Have you noticed this one before ?

Typically, if you look at girl friend boy friend dates or coffee outings, moreoften than not, you see one or both of them kind of subdued…..sometimesthere is a reason, but more often, there ios no reason…Now think about it,what if both of them were fizzed up !

Wow, what a meeting it will be !!!!!Alot of times both of them try to put on their best when they are meetingeach other…I am saying, what if we try to be your natural self and just stayFizzy !!! then what do you think will happen.

Trust me, the Fizz in you will bowl over the other person, more than yourartificial front that you try to put up !

51

POP YOUR FIZZ

Page 74: Fizz

52

Chapter 5 : DIFFERENT FIZZES

Page 75: Fizz

FIZZY HUSBAND / WIFE

This is an awesome combination. If we have spouses that are Fizzed up,then it becomes an unbeatable combination, like a Greenidge-Haynesopening pair (for those of you who are not familiar, Gordon Greenidge andDesmond Haynes were the most destructive opening pair that the WestIndies cricket had and both prolific scorers !) or a Sachin-Sehwag (thegood ole days…….!)…the environment in the house will be fullyelectrified and charged up. This is again something that is absolutelyessential. I don’t literally mean take a bat and start whacking the ballaround .

Remember……when you retain the Fizz in you and bring it out in ouncesand bottles everyday, then you achieve the following…..

I call it the “EASE” Persona….let me explain to you what thatmeans……..

EXCEPTIONAL

Start by being an Exceptional person.

Exceptional means only exceptional and not very good or something else.If you are still not clear what it means, let me tell you what “Exceptional”in the Oxford Illustrated dictionary means…..Outstanding, unusuallygood….This means, clearly you stand out from the crowd…You are the“DIFFERENTIATOR”…

You have heard people say, ”Let’s differentiate”….and I am saying,

“Hey, you are the Differentiator”….

53

POP YOUR FIZZ

Page 76: Fizz

54

Chapter 5 : DIFFERENT FIZZES

Page 77: Fizz

And my friends, when you are the Differentiator, “YOU” Matter..and myfriends, when you matter, nothing else matters ! Always think in terms of“What can you offer differently than the others “..This is when people willsit up and notice you and not only that….they WILL Rememberyou…Long after you have left the room ! BINGO…

AMAZING

Always stay Amazing.

Now, please don’t ask me what Amazing means….It simply means,”Amazing”… . Reminds me of a time, few years back, when I was at aManagement School addressing 150 odd students of an MBA batch. Iwas explaining one of the points through a story and used the word “Sexy”in it and no sooner had I finished narrating my story, than one of theprofessors in the front row put up his hand and asked, “Sir, how do youdefine “sexy”?/ I ofcourse went on to offer an explanation to him in adifferent way, but would spare you those details in this book .

I am sure nobody has any doubt around this…..Have you had anybody sayto you, “What an Amazing guy” …I am telling you to get people to say thisto you…and my friends, the only way they will say it, is when you dosomething exceptional…and you truly make a difference to people’s livesor a person’s life.

Amazing also means “Inspiring”..So when you say something like, “Hariis an Amazing person”..you really mean he is inspiring and has somethingthat I can learn from or look forward to…..BINGO..

If you have not had anybody say this to you, that you are an amazingperson, …I would strongly urge you to start working on being THEAmazing person…Try it….It’s a very intoxicating feeling…

While these adjectives that I have discussed above sound good, pleaseremember that you fundamentally need to have the FIZZ in you and have

55

POP YOUR FIZZ

Page 78: Fizz

56

Chapter 5 : DIFFERENT FIZZES

Page 79: Fizz

it coming out of your system everyday and in everything you do….

Amazing also means “Inspiring”..So when you say something like, “Hariis an Amazing person”..you really mean he is inspiring and has somethingthat I can learn from or look forward to…..BINGO..

How many of you have watched the movie “Scent of a Woman”. Mysuggestion is to go watch it…Brilliant movie ! Al Pacino has done anoutstanding job in his role as a blind retired services officer….So, in one of the scenes, where he meets a woman and is talking to her, shesays, “You are Amazing”, and he quickly retorts, “I am in the AmazingBusiness” ! What a statement !

STUNNING

Stay Stunning……

It means extremely impressive…Stunning is sometimes used for astrikingly attractive appearance, but it is more than that…Remember, it isnot only beauty….It essentially means, having qualities that delight theeye…..So you should always appear Stunning to the viewer, who could beyour Dad, your mom, your son, your spouse, your girl or boy friend yourteacher etc……This means paying very close attention to what you do,what you wear, what you speak etc……stunning means commanding attention..This is the state, when you walk into a room or pass bysomeone, they turn around and say, “That is stunning”….. Are you able toturn that gear on in somebody…Has somebody said that to yousometime….

Sometimes it also means causing bewilderment or shock etc…..I amsaying that we should cause this effect in a positive way..You don’t want to Shock somebody, as in a negative way, that they fallunconscious…….but you create that stunning effect about yourself thatleaves a person’s mouth wide open, leave him agape !!!!!

57

POP YOUR FIZZ

Page 80: Fizz

58

Chapter 5 : DIFFERENT FIZZES

Page 81: Fizz

When your action causes a person’s jaw to drop, it means they have had a“Jaw dropping experience” and this my friends, does not happenoften…So if it happens to you, applaud yourself !

EXCITING/ EXCITED

Are you Exciting or Excited ?

Can you cause someone’s heart to flutter. Are you capable of causingexcitement to someone ? Do you excite somebody ?

Exciting also means stimulating interest and discussion.

• Do you create excitement in the room when you enter ?• Are you able to generate or create an exciting discussion.• Are you able to set the floor on fire ?• Are you capable of generating enough excitement in the room or

people to get excited and tingled ?

A lot of us go through life without excitement and when you look at them, you say, “My God, what in heavens has happened to him or her?”

When you end up dealing with a person like this, you feel you are justconducting a transaction, there is really no interaction orcollaboration….It is just plain simple transaction…That is the worst kindof dealing you can have.

59

POP YOUR FIZZ

Page 82: Fizz

60

Chapter 5 : DIFFERENT FIZZES

Page 83: Fizz

One thing that all of us have to remember is that all of us, Each andEveryone of us has an Opportunity…..Everyday and everytime..

An Opportunity to be EXCEPTIONAL,

An Opportunity to be AMAZING,

An Opportunity to be STUNNING &

An Opportunity to create EXCITEMENT….

All I want to say is that we cannot do any of the above until and unless wehave the FIZZ in us…..

The Fizz that we generate or carry around is what is going to help usdeliver on the above and in turn end up being an Exceptional, Amazing,Stunning and Exciting person….

If you are going to try any of the above without having the Fizz, don’t evenwaste your time and you know what….If you have the Fizz in you, theabove happens automatically and is a part of your character.

Start Doing this RIGHT NOW…Don’t even wait till you get to the nextline or next page my friend…Don’t Focus on being “Exceptional” or“Amazing” or “Stunning” or “Excited” , Just focus on bringing out theFizz in you and the rest will fall into place….I promise you.. and as Ilike to say, “I run a money back scheme on this”

I spoke to a cross section of people around me and in this world and here iswhat some of them had to say…

The question I asked them was, “what does Fizz mean to you” or “Whatcomes to your mind when you hear the word Fizz”?...

Fizzy Teacher

This one I would love to have. Think about it, if you have a teacher whowalks into your class full of fizz, what an environment it would be, isn’t it?

Socho ! (Think !) Visualise !

Acharged up and Energetic teacher walks into the class room to teach youa subject. The natural outcome os this is that the classroom will getexcited, the students will be energized and what follows in th3 next 45minutes or an hour of teaching time will simply be transformed into anenergetic exchange of ideas and interaction in the real sense of the term.

At the end of the allotted lecture time, the teacher and students wouldhave achieved much more than what they would have done in the normalcourse of aday !

Do you agree ? Well, thank you !

Truly, as I travel across the country and meet a lot of academicians, teachers, etc. I find the “FIZZ” factor missing. Don’t get me wrongteachers, I have a lot of respect for my teachers and am in touch with themeven today, but what I am trying to bring out here is the “Fizz” Factor.Your knowledge of the subject is not doubted even for a moment, but ifyou just add a spoonful of Fizz to it, think of the outcome. Wow !

This is what we need in schools and colleges across the country today.Teachers with Fizz in them !

Fizzy Boss

This one again a sure shot WINNER !

All of us have bosses, whether at home or at office. Some of us have atboth places ! (pun intended)

So, imagine having a Fizzy boss…”Mazaa AAjaayega” ! simply means,“It will be fun”.

AFizzy boss is someone who is always looking for new ideas, looking atmaking the workplace more energetic, looking at all kinds ofopportunities to increase interaction, looking for ways to motivate histeam and organization etc.

These are not many in number again, unfortunately. Enough research hasgone around telling you that people do not leave organizations, they leavemanagers/bosses etc…

We all look forward to working with somebody we can work with !Simply put, somebody who empathises, understands, can drive us toachieve greater heights and in the process move us up the value chain.Fizzy bosses are people who align the team goals in line with theorganizational goals, as a natural outcome.

I have worked for two decades with some of the best multi-nationalcorporations and have been fortunate to work with some really “Fizzy”bosses. What a pleasure they are indeed !

You never feel like you are working. They transport you to a differentplane altogether and unconsciously help you achieve and deliver more.

This also becomes more important, as a lot of us spend more time awake atthe office than at home or with our own people…Think about it…On anaverage, we all spend about 8-10 hours atleast at workplace withcolleagues and bosses. So would it not be wonderful to have a FIZZYboss !

These are bosses who are always high ! {and I mean in the real sense of theterm, not the type you are thinking ! }

Infact, I have seen organizations that have been successful and achievedmuch more just as a result of having FIZZYbosses and leaders around.

Please do not DEFER or put off this activity of FIZZing till tomorrow orfor a rainy day..Because my friends, there is no another Rainy day ! Whathas to happen is TODAY! DO ITNOW!

Some things in life are simple…I was reading somewhere a nice quotewhich says “It is difficult to make things simple, making it complex iseasier”. Good one, think about it. So while what I am telling you to do,the Act of FIZZing may sound simple and easy, that is the FUN element. And as you start to do it, you will realize it’s not going to be very Easy…..Itwill require COMMITMENT, PASSION, PERSISTENCE to hit the“FIZZ” button…

FIZZing for one day or alternate days or whenever you feel like it, is easy,no big deal…

What requires EFFORT is the continuous and never ending supply of “FIZZ”….

Let’s get after it my friends !

Rule No. 10

Of course we can have rules to rule the rules, HAHAHA.. .. I hear youloud and clear.

Here we are, the rule to end all rules!

DO NOT get carried away by the jargon only…..

At the end of the day, CAST away all the rules,

GET and FEEL your FIZZ taking you to heights of success in life andrelationships&PAINT your world with fun filled joy from MOMENT to MOMENT tomake LIFE more than worth living!.

So, here is Rule 10 for you,

Throw all these rules through the window at the first opportunity of youhaving reached maturity in FIZZ!

How do you know when you have reached that level?

The answer is Simple; Stupid. You will not be asking this questionwhen you are there!!

So, now we have come to the conclusion. ..As far as you and I are con-cerned, this is not really a conclusion, it is the “Initiation”….

INITIATION into the school of FIZZ, Initiation into a life full of Fizz…A life that is yours to overflow…Keep bubbling my friends.

I am also hoping that you have been able to absorb some of the tips, if not all from this book and they will act as your ready reckoners…I would strongly suggest that you keep them as small cards with you and look them up when in doubt !

Life will throw challenges at us all the time and most of them will be unex-pected and will come up at a time when you are unprepared. So, your FIZZ is the armour or defence that will get you out of a tight situation or if not, atleast let you laugh through it.

Do light your “Fizz” every morning, when you jump out of bed and keep it burning all day my friends, because this FIZZ is what will get you through to the end of your day and will bring you back alive and kicking every morning, along with the sunrise !

Like they say, “FIZZte” raho ! So if you are blessing or conveying your good wishes to someone, try saying “Happy Fizzes” and “Good Fizzes” and for the more culturally inclined, “FIZZteraho”!....:)

Get your box of Crayons out and color the walls as you walk past. Yes I know you were told when you were young and a kid, that coloring walls is a bad thing and it still maybe a bad thing, but it’s a fun thing!

So, what are you waiting for my friends ?...Hit the FIZZ button….

VRRoooooooooooooooooooooooooommmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmMMM ! (0-60 in ….seconds)Have fun and Have a Fizzfullife!Cheers!!
