Example 1:Use cases for Presence, Instant Messaging, and Chat

From home, Jill sees her friends being reachable on her buddy list on her fixed SIP phone @home. Before going to university, she sends out an instant message to everyone present: “Who wants to go to the movies tonight?” On her way to university, she gets responses from Lena and Anna. Plans for tonight are set!

Mike is on a very interesting chat on the internet at his computer @home. He has a football game to go to: “I’ve got to go now. I’m back in 10min.” On his 30min bus ride, he logs in to the same chat again via his mobile phone. “Hi dudes! I’m back!”

IMS is a Key element of the Network evolution

IMS (IP Multimedia Subsystem) is the common control infrastructure for real-time and non-real-time peer-to-peer multimedia services and any mixture of those

IMS is designed and standardized by 3GPP to integrate smoothly with existing mobile and fixed networks

New and existing services (e.g. Presence, Location) and applications can be connected and controlled by IMS through the standardized ISC interface

By using SIP (Session Initiation Protocol) IMS based services can be accessed from any IP/SIP capable device (UMTS, GPRS, WLAN, wireline users, etc. )

IMS supports roaming and interworking with existing network services UTRAN, EDGE

Introducing the Acme Packet Session Director as SBC

The Acme Packet Session Director supports SBC as part of our solution (for DSL subscribers or IP peering)

The main objectives using a SBC are:Security: Separate the provider network from the Internet

SIP signaling flows via Session Boarder ControllerRTP stream to Trunk Media Gateway and Media Server flows via Session Boarder Controller

Overcome issues around Network Address Translation. The Session Border Controller corrects the IP-address inconsistencies caused by residential NAT

Media ServerIP Unity Mereon 6000

The Mereon 6000 Media Server is a high-density, carrier-class DSP engine that performs the high-speed, high-volume media processing functions required for enhanced services, such as

playing announcements, recording, automated speech recognition (ASR), interactive voice response (IVR), text-to-speech, billing record creation (CDR, IPDR), trans-coding, and fax detection.

The 10,000-port capacity media server can be easily partitioned, allowing processing power to be effectively divided among multiple applications or customers.

Example: Taxi Company improves its service with PoC Call-a-Cab is a very successful taxi company using push and talk for the coordination between back-office and couriers.Based on availability and location the coordinator can selective request those couriers who are next to a customer. Free taxi drivers can manage their time flexible without the need to contact the coordinator. By using the availability functionality they can show the coordinator how long they are available.

Using PoC with location e.g. taxi companies can offer shortest waiting times Using PoC with presence e.g. taxi companies can assign their staff most efficiently

Siemens FMC referencesIMS success stories prove the trend towards FMC

Siemens Communications and Time Warner Cable recently showcased fully integrated fixed line, mobile and WiFi broadband technologies via the IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) designed to deliver fixed mobile convergence (FMC).

KPN has chosen Siemens as the strategic IP partner for its fixed network and mobile activities in the Netherlands, Belgium (BASE) and Germany (E-Plus) – for VoIP, IMS and FMC.

France Telecom: As part of their strategic alliance, France Telecom and Siemens established a first milestone in FMC. Orange UK and Wanadoo successfully tested IMS as a reference solution for future convergence applications. In this project, Siemens provided end-to-end expertise as an equipment supplier, combining solutions from the fixed network, mobile network and end-user device sectors.

Government of Nanning, China

“We are very impressed with the ability of Siemens Communications to bring together the vastly different domains of communication, data and applications. And I hope that the innovative technology from Siemens will put us up with the leaders in information provisioning in China and throughout Asia”Liu Qi-Bao, Deputy Governor of Guangxi Province.
