HONORING TRADITIONSENGAGING FAMILIES

SUPPORTING COMMUNITIES

When our children areyoung, we train themto write thank younotes for every gift.We have those argu-

ments with our kids, because societysays that it’s the right thing to do,because it lets gift givers who live far awayknow that the gift arrived, because itshows that we care as much about thepeople who gave as about the gift itself.Gratitude, as it turns out, is still importanteven when nobody is telling us we have towrite the note before we use the new toy.

Judaism teaches us that ultimately, every-thing belongs to God, so God is the oneto whom we have to show gratitude forall things. I would add that this onlyapplies to things. People control theirown actions, positive and negative, andtherefore we get the opportunity to sharehow grateful we are for the kind and lov-ing actions of the people in our lives.

I am grateful to Cantor Barash, AndrewAppel, and Susan Cosden for welcomingme back in as part of a fantastic team, fortrying new things together, and for having a lotof fun together along the way. I am gratefulto the entire staff: Tiffani Zaharadnick,Ardyth Majewski, Cheryl Otto, Rick Fox,Michael Saldana, Bob Spangenberg, NoeVega and Toni Quartana, for making surethings have gone smoothly, especially aswe slowly reopen and remember how towelcome people in-person. I am grateful toMike Grinker and the entire leadership ofthe congregation for giving me the opportu-nity to do what I love doing, and for support-ing me, working with me, and guiding mealong the way. Rabbi Berkson, welcome backfrom your sabbatical. I know it wasn’t whatyou planned, but I hope that ultimately, you made it what you needed.

Shalom, congregants and friends.

Yesterday I had the dis-tinct pleasure of walking

our entire CEEBJ grounds unhurried. Thesun was warm, the breeze was pleasant, and the birds were plentiful. For that Ithanked Ha-Shem. But that onlyexplained a portion of my delight. Ourhandsome building (it’s just as stunningfrom the outside), it’s beautiful setting, andour well designed and cared-for groundsaccounted for the balance. To all thosewho have supported the establishmentand maintenance of our facility in RiverHills with their time and other resourcesover the years – a heartfelt ‘thanks’ fromall of us! And to all congregants and staff,a reminder that the grounds we share arethere to be enjoyed.

Now I would like to focus our gratitudeon Rabbi Jessica Barolsky, for her serviceas our sabbatical rabbi. During the last sixmonths, she has provided the confidenceand stability that allowed Rabbi Berksonto realize his sabbatical goals while per-mitting synagogue life to continue with-out disruption. With her experience andher unique strengths, Rabbi Barolskyplayed a significant role in shepherdingour congregation through a challengingtime. Thank you Rabbi Barolsky, for beingthere for us in so many ways!

With that, we welcome Rabbi Berksonback from a well-deserved period of restand rejuvenation! We look forward to syn-agogue life with our esteemed andbeloved senior Rabbi, enriched andrefreshed. And finally, we are grateful thatwe are increasingly able to do so in andaround our synagogue and sanctuary, aswe continue to increase in-person activitiesat CEEBJ. Stay tuned to Emanu Email andour website for opportunities to participate.

Be well and take care,Michael Grinker

Special Tisha B’Av Service on Saturday Night, July 17, 7:30 pm

Tisha B’Av (the ninth day of Av) marks one of the low points in our Jewish calendar. It commemorates the destruction of the first and second temples, and the beginningof the galut – the exile into the diaspora– which was our Jewish fate until recent his-tory, with the founding of the state of Israel.

Tisha B’Av is traditionally a full fast day from sun-down to sun-down. Our synagogueservice begins with Havdalah at 7:30 pm and then Ma’ariv, the evening service, fol-lowed by the chanting of Eicha, the Book of Lamentations. It is customary to sit on thefloor or on low chairs during the reading of Eicha. The evening service is recited with aplaintive tone, and the Book of Lamentations is chanted to a haunting melody. We willalso be singing stirring songs between the chapters of Eicha. Please join us in person oron Zoom to participate in this unique service and to learn more about Tisha B’Av.

Annual MeetingThursday, August 12, 6:30 pmPlease RSVP for the Annual Meeting atceebj.org or call CEEBJ at (414) 228-7545.

Rabbi Barolsky, continued from page 1I am so grateful to have been able to serve asSabbatical Rabbi again these last six months. Iam grateful for every conversation, story, and fear you have shared with me. I amgrateful to be part of your life, part of wel-coming new lives, part of celebrating mile-stones along the way, part of saying goodbyeat the end of life. I am grateful for your confi-dences, your compliments, your ideas.Thankyou for sharing so much of yourselves with me.I’m not going anywhere. My family and I arestill in Milwaukee and part of this congrega-tion, so while I’ll be on the bima and on yourscreen less frequently, this is definitely l’hi-tra’ot, until we meet again soon—and it’sMilwaukee, so I have no doubt that we will. Thank you, CEEBJ.

And what can we say about RenaStrober, the high-performance fuel forour journey that night? Whether shewas lamenting a wedding that was neverto come (“Guys and Dolls”), or singingabout outer space (“I Don’t Want to Liveon the Moon” from her new children’salbum, or playfully wondering why, - ifshe was performing in the midst of fourcantors, couldn’t she also be titled asone-- her message was that life’s journeyneedn’t always be taken so seriously.

Cantor Barash’s masterful collaborationswith each of the guests gave us the premi-um reward for our visit to the land of music. And how we LOVE our personal Tevye!

The sixth essential member of this travelteam is the technical genius, Scott Finch. From his living room in Merritt, NorthCarolina, he orchestrated every aspect ofthis finely meshed production. The manis a wizard.

Warm thanks to the Music Committee, including Richard Masters, Chair, BarbaraAbrams, Cantor David Barash, DebraGorra Barash, Alla Franklin, AndreaGoetzinger, Jean Lauterbach, Nancy Miller,Leila Silverberg, Michael Taibleson, DanWilkinson, and Margo Zimmermann, who spent countless hours to fulfill thedream that Jacquie Wolf, of blessed mem-ory, envisioned for our pleasure 19 yearsago. She is deeply missed.

Being GratefulFor months, our Directorof Lifelong Learning, SusanCosden has asked eachFriday on Facebook for

“What are you grateful for?” Recently, I havebeen using a walker to aid me in walking as aresult of a recent hip injury. While using thewalker I have seen how people, total strangershave reached out to help me by holdingdoors, handing me groceries and carryingpackages to my car. One day at Culvers, a serv-er carried my drinks and brought us napkins.Unless one is on crutches, or using a walker, one doesn’t realize how many obstacles onemust face, from broken sidewalks to curbs to,perhaps the most dangerous of all, door mats.

Now that the pandemic is waning and we arelooking forward to the normalization of life, there must be many things for which we arethankful. Too many times we focus on what isnot working instead of what is good in ourlives. As we get ready to gather together to cel-ebrate the High Holy Day season and review thepast year and see what we lost and what wegained, friends, relatives, grandchildren, friend-ships and experiences. The future is lookingbrighter for our nation and our congregation,so we need to focus on what we are gratefulfor in our lives. I am grateful for all who aid mein assembling Ha-Kol each month. I amalso thankful for my family and friends. Thinkabout what you are grateful for and share itwith others. You will be a happier person. Cary Silverstein

Brown Bag Lunch Encouraged (Nourish your body as you nourish your soul.) Pleasejoin Susan Cosden for an hour of studying the weekly Torah portion and how itapplies to our lives today.

The portions we will cover in July are Pinchas, Matot-Masei, D’varim, Vaet’chanan, and Eikev.

Through Torah we will examine moral conflicts and ethical lessons. We will explorea variety of different God concepts and what each one implores us to do, being cre-ated in God’s image. By wrestling together, we will each make personal meaningand find insights in our sacred text.

“What the worldneeds now is love, sweet love. It's theonly thing that there'sjust too little of.

What the world needs now is love, sweet love. No not just for some, butfor everyone.”

-Lyrics by Hal David and music composed by Burt Bacharach

Why did I choose to quote this song thismonth? Perhaps you are thinking it isbecause we Jews have witnessed such arise in anti-Semitism and anti-Zionism late-ly. We need to come together and loveone another as Jews because it is harder tobe a Jew right now. We need to show ourlove for Israel. We need to rededicate ourlove for our neighbors so we havestronger allies who will partner with us.

Perhaps you are thinking it is because thefirst Sunday in July is July 4, our country’sIndependence Day. We need love of ourcountry and to love everyone in ourcountry. We need to celebrate outsidesafely and to see our loved ones.

Perhaps you are thinking it is becausethere is still so much inequality or sys-temic racism or misogyny or homopho-bia/transphobia or hate in the United

States and in Israel and around theworld. If we could treat each other withDivine Love that radiates from each of usthe world would be a much better place.

Perhaps you are thinking, wait, this is ourDirector of Lifelong Learning, it isbecause on July 24 we read from ParashatVa’et’chanan, the Torah portion thatincludes the Shema V’ahavtah and thefamous line, “And you shall love Godwith all your heart, with all your soul, andwith all your moreness.” Furthermore, thisyear, we read this portion on Tu B’Av, theJewish love holiday. Knowing Susan, sheis probably REALLY excited about that.(Two Spotify playlists for the same day!)

Perhaps you are thinking, maybe this was tocelebrate two talented Jewish artists. Perhapsnot everyone knew they were each Jewish.

Perhaps this was to see if others are inter-ested in Jewish songwriters. Now someof you are thinking, Jewish songwritersare not my passion. I love birding or Ilove gardening or I love hiking or I lovephotography or I love Anime.

Each of you are correct. I picked thissong because we need more love in theworld and with the world opening upagain it is time to celebrate at CEEBJ bysharing our love with one another. Therefore, on Sunday, July 25, we areinviting all of you to join us when wewill come together to celebrate Love,CEEBJ, Tu B’Av, and Va’et’chanan. Moreinformation will be available soon

through Emanu-Email. We will have dif-ferent people leading activities, primarilyoutside, that they love to do and weinvite you as individuals, couples, orfamilies to pick the activity that you loveto do and join us. Then we will all cometogether in the parking lot to share andto celebrate and to schmooze. Perhapsif people are interested this might leadto affinity groups that on a semi-regularbasis get together to do things based ona shared interest.

If you want to know more about theweekly Torah portion, what is happeningin Israel, or about the holidays of TishaB’Av and Tu B’Av, please visit our onlinelearning page of the ceebj.org. For a touror a how to use the online learning page, please join me on July 7 at 11:00 am onZoom. The link will be available inEmanu-Email.

On a personal note, one of the things Ilove to do all year round and especiallyin the summer is get to know the cityand state in which I live. As I moved heretwo years ago late in the summer andlast year due to Covid I was not leavingmy home, I turn to all of you now foradvice to ask what should I visit? Whereshould I hike? Where should I eat? Whatfarmers’ market should I support? Whereare good places to take photos? Mostimportantly, who would like to join meon any of these outings?

Social Emotional SpiritualLearning (SESL) Task Force

From OurPresidentAfter months of limitingsocial interaction, theidea of increased inter-

action causes anxiety for many. InWisconsin, the number of fully vaccinatedpersons is 46%. It is very exciting that callswill start coming in: invitations from friendswho want to meet for dinner, go to themovies or see live concerts. Some personsfeel great anxiety when thinking aboutgoing to do things inside again. Spendingtime in social situations may not be as sim-ple as penciling a date into the calendar.Stepping back out into the social whirl mayfeel unfamiliar and uncomfortable-even ifit's something that once felt natural.

Experts suggest communicating and beinghonest about your needs. It's OK to tellfriends that you're only getting togetherone-on-one, outdoors or continuing towear masks if that eases your anxietyabout reengaging in social interactions. They also say before making plans with afriend, ask about their comfort level withsocial gatherings: Are they up for a day-long event with a group of friends, orwould they prefer to ease into social inter-actions with a shorter, one-on-one outing?

Experts suggest not shying away from awk-ward moments and if there’s a pause inconversation, remember to ask questionsabout the other person’s life and practiceyour listening skills. That’s always a goodway to keep the chatter going. Anothersuggestion is to extend grace to others. Givepeople a break, don’t judge to harshly andtry to give them a pass at first. Other thingsto remember is to listen to your body, Thepandemic has taken a toll on the mentaland physical health of individuals. Social

isolation is linked to increased risk of heartdisease, stroke, dementia, depression andearly death from all causes in older adults—and communities of color are at a higherrisk. If you are not feeling well, seek theopinion of your health care provider.

Lastly, don’t give up—for many the socializingmuscle is rusty, and as we practice then it willbe more conditioned and easier to do.

At the Annual CEEBJ Meeting on August12, the Women of Emanu-El will awardCEEBJ the remaining money for thephone system. That is over $11,000 givenover three years for this cause.

WE have two fundraisers coming up. The Shana Tova card is sent to all fami-lies and congregants. For $90 you willhave your name on the cared sent to allfamilies and congregants. This is ourbiggest fundraiser, and the artwork is cre-ated by a congregant. See the wall(between the restrooms) at the entranceof CEEBJ for past examples of the artwork.

Secondly, we are having a RoshHashanah Honey Sale. We are using anew company. The honey is certifiedkosher. It will be mailed to you and yourfriends and family in time for RoshHashanah. Shipping is gratis (free) ifordered by July 7, 2021. After that there isa shipping charge. So, hurry and orderyour honey to welcome the New Yearsfor your friends and family members. From Our PresidentMy mom passed awayon May 28 after fivedays of non-responsive-

My sister did stay withher for four days, until I convinced her to gohome on the evening of the fifth day. Mymom died that night. It was as if she did notwant us there at the end. My mom mayhave been “non-responsive” those five days, but I think she knew we were there andcould hear us talking. I will always love herfor that. My mom was 97 and spunky to theend! I am thankful that I was there for herlast three days and was able to watch overher with my sister. My mother’s funeral wasin Dallas, Texas where she lived most of heradult life. We were able to stream the funer-al through Youtube so my son and daughtercould watch, including over 30 family mem-bers and friends from around the country. We had a lovely funeral and met severalpeople we had not seen in many years. Fourteen congregants volunteered to clean up the Hopkins Street Cemetery on Sunday, May 30. The burial grounds were overgrown with bush, but our group after two and a half hours of hard work left the cemetery cleared out.

Rabbi Jessica Barolsky led a brief service. We hope to continue the Hopkins Street Cemetery Clean-up as part of our Mitzvah Day Celebration.

Independence Day

6:15pm KabbalatShabbat Service /Early Shabbat Worship

A small group of congregants have met todetermine how we as a congregation canmove from tzedakah (charity) to tzedek(justice). As a follow up to the Tikkun Ha-IrRacial Justice seminars, we are determiningwhat we want to learn about and developan action plan for. We hope to partner withLifelong Learning to achieve this. If you areinterested in participating in the conversa-tions regarding racial justice, let me know.

Mitzvah Day was a huge success with 375snack bags provided to Milwaukee Center

for Independence’s summer meal program,45 personal hygiene bags to Street Angelsand 3 boxes of school supplies for Souls tothe Polls. Thanks to all who participated.

Nadine Zuckerman and Judy Lerner are revi-talizing the once a month in-synagogue sand-wich making program; this time for MetaHouse. Bag lunches will be provided for theirin-house programs that have begun again. And we have congregants continuing tomake sandwiches for Just One More Ministry.

The garden is growing tomatoes, beans, cucumbers, carrots and lettuce. With the

dry weather we have needed to waterdaily. Please let me know if you canhelp. Thanks to Gary Kavalar, MikeGrinker, Gene Kelber and Robert Jacobsfor putting the fence around the garden.

The Village of River Hills provided uswith wood chips for our garden path-way. We have too much! If anyonewould like chips, please help yourself.

Check the CEEBJ calendar/website for thenext Social Action Committee meeting.
