Greetings!
As you can easily see in viewing these amazing
pictures it was a heartfelt, wonderful surprise
retirement party on June 7th with lots of fun,
laughs and conversations. I want to thank
Fedele Bauccio, Bon Appetit Management
Co., Stephen Revetria, Giants Enterprises and
our wonderful hospitality program staff of KO
Odsather, Emily Doyle and Katie Hammon
for planning and making this wonderful party
happen. I was truly surprised. I was lured to
this room with these statements: “Let’s see the
World Series Trophy and we’ll have a couple
of beers and then go to the game.” And as I
opened the door I was speechless,
overwhelmed and totally, completely (never
expected it) surprised! It was a perfect party to
celebrate my 21 years as director of the
Hospitality Management Program.
It was so great to be with the current students
and staff, our alumni who are now in
successful careers, advisory board members
and hospitality industry friends. For those who
couldn’t attend you were there in spirit.
We celebrated all of our hard work, successes
and life-changing experiences. In my remarks
at the party I said that every student is in my
heart and thanked every student for the honor
and meaningful experience in teaching them.
Thanks and thanks for an amazing 21 years--
what a great “ride”! I have many treasured
memories that will be in my heart forever.
In the first row of pictures the middle one is
with my daughters, Rose (L) and Cassandra
(R). Next to that one is with my wife, Sallie.
I’ve recently remarried and Cassandra and her
husband, Jamie had a boy, Mackay. Life is full
of many blessings as I begin this next chapter
of my life. I’ll be at USF until December, 2011
to assist with the transition.
P.S. Thanks to the 2011 Catering & Fine
Dining Management class for the special
“Costello 21” Giants jersey!

This year the Hospitality Management Association was able to send 10 seniors to New York City in November for the International Hotel, Motel and Restaurant Show. Kim Mai, Kimberly Buhay, Yu Sueda, Mike Tamaki, Nicole Santamaria, Kassandra Arko, Terry Ramirez, Ally Dutra, Stephen Vais, and Maddie Parks received a tour of the Peninsula Hotel and the Plaza while in New York. The trip included four full days of exploring the city, eating at wonderful restaurants and experiencing the incredible hospitality that New York provides. During the IHMRS, students had the opportunity to attend workshops, network with industry leaders and learn more about different aspects
Student News
On Saturday April 16th 2011, over 50 Hospitality Management students, staff, friends and family of the USF community gathered at the Golden Gate Bridge for USF HMA’s 11th Annual for Women’s Cancer Research.
This annual event was started 11 years ago in honor of a member of our community who lost her battle with ovarian cancer. Each year the Walk-A-Thon aims to raise money for Women’s Cancer Research at UCSF’s Helen Diller Family Comprehensive Cancer Center to raise awareness for the need to research all forms of women’s cancer and see its eradication in our life-time. This year with the efforts of walkers and donors alike, HMA was able to bring the total amount raised in the past 11 years to over $30,000 for Gynecological Oncology research. Many thanks to all participants and donors that continue to support this important cause!

This past February 2011, CMAA members Ally Dutra, Katie Hammon, Roehlyn Quisao, Alyssa Andrade, Teresa Sartor and Noelle Lee and faculty advisor, Assistant Professor Michelle Millar, attended CMAA’s 84th Annual World Conference in Orlando, Florida at the Marriott World Center. Our CMAA student chapter raised money throughout the year by working at various 49ers games, St. Francis Yacht Club events, and other events to fund this educational experience. Next year, CMAA plans to have at least five students attend and enter their chapter for the Club of the Future Idea Board in order to be ranked at the conference by club industry professionals.

Thoughts from Michelle My Nguyen ’10 BHIP Alumni and School of Management Valedictorian
“My experience at the University of San Francisco and the Hospitality Management
Program has truly been amazing. By being in the program, I learned how to effectively
interact and network with others. I’ve also attained many other important skills such as
time management, communication, and critical thinking. All of these skills are applicable
in my daily work-life as I constantly juggle between different projects and communicate
with managers. Aside from the program’s challenging and fun courses, the program also
provides a wonderful support system with advisors and instructors who are always encouraging and
supportive. They inspired me to continuously work hard and reach my potential. I would not succeed in
college and be where I am today without the hospitality program. In my opinion, the Hospitality
Management Program is the best program that USF has to offer.”

The economy being what it is today,
students are scrambling for both paid
and unpaid opportunities in order to
fulfill their 800-hour work/internship
experience requirement for graduation.
Unpaid internships have, once again,
come under the watchful eye of the
Supreme Court. Good business practice
deems that unpaid opportunities need to
be fairly well structured (both in writing
and in practice) to sufficiently meet and
support six specific criteria outlined by
the U.S. Department of Labor Wage and
Hour Division. I am happy to send you
the link to this site, as well as to a recent
article by Kathleen Pender in the
Business section of the Sunday Chronicle
from Sunday, June 19, 2011, entitled,
Most internships are required to pay minimum
wage.
We look forward to the day when paid
internships are the norm so that students
don’t have to hold down two jobs during
the school year to pay for tuition. I
would welcome the opportunity to meet
with anyone who would like to review or
restructure their internship program. The
goal is always to offer the greatest
learning opportunities for our students
who are the future leaders of the
industry.
As we close out one school year and
begin a new one, I’d like to say
“Thanks!” to all who were guest
lecturers, assisted with our Mock Inter-
views in Fall and Spring semesters,
sponsored recruiting tables at the Annual
USF Career Fair, and hosted field-trips,
dinners and receptions for our students.
Thank you for providing opportunities
where we could show-case our students
such as the S.F. Travel Association’s
annual luncheon, and Hotel Council of
S.F. Hotel Heroes, and to all who
personally mentored students
throughout the year. Your support for
our students makes the difference
between “good enough” and “Great!”.
