We are not slaves, he is not our master, but we call him Father, Abba, Daddy. We hear the voice of God speaking to us directly and intimately, including us as his children, as his family. The story is told of St Augustine of Hippo, a great philosopher and theologian. He was preoccupied with the doctrine of the Blessed Trinity. He wanted so much to understand the doctrine of one God in three persons and to be able to explain it logically. One day he was walking along the sea shore and reflecting on this matter. Suddenly, he saw a little child all alone on the shore. The child made a whole in the sand, ran to the sea with a little cup, filled her cup with sea water, ran up and emptied the cup into the hole she had made in the sand. Back and forth she went to the sea, filled her cup and came and poured it into the hole. Augustine drew up and said to her, “Little child, what are you doing?” She replied, “I am trying to empty the sea into this hole.” “How do you think,” Augustine asked her, “that you can empty this immense sea into this tiny hole and with this tiny cup?” He answered back, “And you, how do you suppose that with your small head you can comprehend the immensity of God?” With that the child disappeared. The doctrine of the inner relationship of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit in such a way that each of them is fully and equally God, yet there are not three Gods but one, cannot be fully comprehended by the human mind. It is a mystery. Jesus says in the gospel that he is with us always until the end of the age. In the Gospel he tells the disciples to go spread the news about Jesus, about the trinity, about the family of God. That’s still the story. This weekend we remember our family. With best wishes - Fr. First Reading Responsorial Psalm Second Reading

Dt 4:32-34. 39-40A reading from the book of DeuteronomyThe Lord himself is God in heavenabove and on earth below: there is noother.

Moses said to the people: ‘Put thisquestion to the ages that are past, thatwent before you, from the time Godcreated man on earth: Was there ever aword so majestic, from one end ofheaven to the other? Was anything everheard? Did ever a people hear the voiceof the living God speaking from the heartof the fire, as you heard it, and remainalive? Has any god ventured to take tohimself one nation from the midst ofanother by ordeals, signs, wonders, warwith mighty hand and outstretched arm,by fearsome terrors – all this that theLord your God did for you before youreyes in Egypt?‘Understand this today, therefore, andtake it to heart: The Lord is God indeed,in heaven above as on earth beneath,he and no other. Keep his laws andcommandments as I give them to youtoday so that you and your children mayprosper and live long in the land that theLord your God gives you for ever.’

(R.) Happy the people the Lord haschosen to be his own.

1. The word of the Lord is faithfuland all his works to be trusted. The Lord loves justice and rightand fills the earth with his love. (R.)

2. With his word the heavens weremade, by the breath of his mouth all thestars. He spoke; and they came to be.He commanded; they sprang into being.(R.)

3. The Lord looks on those who reverehim, on those who hope in his love,to rescue their souls from death,to keep them alive in famine. (R.)

4. Our soul is waiting for the Lord. The Lord is our help and our shield.May your love be upon us, O Lord,as we place all our hope in you. (R.)

Rom 8:14-17A reading from the letter of St Paul tothe RomansYou have received the Spirit that makesyou God’s own children, and in thatSpirit we call God: Father, our Father!

Everyone moved by the Spirit is a son ofGod. The spirit you received is not thespirit of slaves bringing fear into yourlives again; it is the spirit of sons, and itmakes us cry out, ‘Abba, Father!’ TheSpirit himself and our spirit bear unitedwitness that we are children of God. Andif we are children we are heirs as well:heirs of God and coheirs with Christ, sharing his sufferings so as to share hisglory.

Gospel Acclamation

Alleluia, alleluia!Glory to the Father, the Son, and theHoly Spirit: to God who is, who was, andwho is to come.Alleluia!

Gospel

Mt 28:16-20A reading from the holy Gospel according to MatthewBaptise them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.

The eleven disciples set out for Galilee, to the mountain where Jesus had arranged to meetthem. When they saw him they fell down before him, though some hesitated. Jesus came up andspoke to them. He said, ‘All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go,therefore, make disciples of all the nations; baptise them in the name of the Father and of theSon and of the Holy Spirit, and teach them to observe all the commands I gave you. And knowthat I am with you always; yes, to the end of time.’

Reflection by Mary Coloe

The Easter season celebrates some of the most important events and beliefs in Christian tradition. In the last seven weeks, wehave remembered Jesus’ Last Supper with his friends (regarded as the institution or establishment of the Eucharist); Jesus’death on the cross; the discovery of the empty tomb on Easter Sunday; the appearances of the Risen Lord to his disciples; theAscension into heaven; and finally, the Holy Spirit filling the disciples at Pentecost. They are events that have shaped Christianbelief for nearly 2,000 years. They provide the basis of beliefs and teachings such as: Christ present in the Eucharist; theresurrection of Jesus and the hope of resurrection for all people; the divinity of Jesus; and the ongoing action of the Holy Spiritin the world. The period of Easter-Pentecost celebrates these truly momentous events, beliefs and teachings.Almost to round off this extraordinary focus on Christian beliefs and teachings, the Church this week celebrates the centraldoctrine of Christian faith: the Trinity. The belief in the Trinity is the belief that there are three ‘persons’ in the one Godhead:Father; Son; and Holy Spirit.Behind the formal language of the doctrines is an affirmation of God’s abiding presence with us, and our abiding invitation todwell in God. God is with us. We sign our bodies as a simple action to say we are people in communion with God. Just as Pauland the disciples had to allow God to be bigger than their own limited expectation, the Gospel challenges me to be willing toallow my faith to grow, and my images of God to be constantly expanded. As my life experience changes, it means taking timeto ponder, ‘Where is God here?’ This question is not doubt, but faith constantly seeking to be open to God’s newness.
