FIUMEFiume was under Hungarian rule twice -from 1779 to 1809, and from 1870 to 1918.From 1809 to 1870 Fiume was administereddirectly by Austria. Fiume was an importantseaport and to some extent a rival withTrieste for the Adriatic trade. Fiumeacquired the status of a free port, whichhelped trade.

The Croat element of the population resentedAustro-Hungarian rule, and felt that theindependence of the city was best protectedwith Italian support. Italian merchantsincreasingly dominated the trade of the city,and Italian political and military influencewas expanding in the Adriatic betweenWWI and WWII. This is reflected in therevenue stamp issues of the period.

In the aftermath of WWI, first the Croats,then the Italians, tried to control the citywithout long-term success, and lawlessnessbecame rife, leading to intervention by Britishand French troops. The Italian poet Gabrieled'Annunzio seized the city in September1919, setting up the self-styled and self-proclaimed "Regency of Cornaro", untilItalian troops took control on December1919. A Free State existed until 1924, butwith control constantly fluctuating betweenrival factions. From March 1922 Italianmilitary forces effectively held control.Under the Treaty of Rome of 1924, themain part of Fiume was returned to Italy,but Yugoslavia gained Susak.

With the progressive defeat of Italy inWWII, German troops took control of Fiumeand the Adriatic coast. As they, in turn,withdrew, pro-Tito Communist partisanstook over control of Fiume and thesurrounding rural district. During 1945Fiume remained an autonomous district, butwas renamed Rijeka and was graduallyincorporated into Yugoslavia in 1946.
