Spring/Summer

Who said workouts have to be in the

gym on the treadmill, or running

along a track?

Not that there’s anything wrong with those

methods, mind you, but Granbury Parks and

Recreation Coordinator Josh McGinnis has

another idea.

McGinnis said there is always plenty of

room in the Granbury sports leagues.

“Our softball league has more women than

men, that’s one of their workouts,” he said.

“First Financial Bank, that’s pretty much why

they have a team is to work out.”

This isn’t the old beer-on-base league.

Nothing in the Granbury rec leagues reper-

toire is, in fact.

And there is plenty to choose from. Along

with softball, the list includes kickball, sand

volleyball, indoor volleyball, dodgeball, bas-

ketball and flag football.

“I’m lucky enough to be able to say what

I do helps out with a person’s health,” said

McGinnis.

“You move in every sport we offer.”

Softball and flag football are year-round.

Kickball, dodgeball and basketball are primar-

ily spring, summer and fall.

And McGinnis is always looking at new

ways to keep folks interested.

“I’m also looking at a water volleyball

league,” he said. “It’d be cool. It’s hot outside,

people want to swim, but they also like play-

ing volleyball. They can do both.

“I’d also love to get an adult baseball league

started. Fort Worth does it. We are a baseball

town.”

While softball and flag football do some-

times have to deal with rougher weather,

being year-round, McGinnis said they also

have some of the most dedicated athletes

participating.

“Flag football guys are some dedicated

players, let me tell you,” he said. “They’ll play

LOTS OF LEAGUE ACTION: There’s plenty of fun and fi tness activities in the Granbury Parks and Recreation Department-sponsored adult recreation leagues.

ABOUT: Granbury Parks and Recreation Department offers a variety of adult rec leagues that provide a chance to have fun and get a workout in:

SPORTS: Basketball, dodgeball, flag football, kickball, volleyball, sand volleyball, softball.

in rain, cold, it doesn’t bother them at all.

“And they sprint. It’s not just running - and

it’s every 10 seconds when they run a play.”

McGinnis said one reason he pushes

participating in the city rec leagues is to

contend with societal changes. Once upon

a time video games didn’t exist, and young

people were outside more playing pickup

games such as football, basketball and

baseball.

“Video games are taking over the world,

and we’ve got to counter that,” he said.

“When I was a kid, I was out climbing a tree.”

McGinnis said it is true that some partici-

pants aren’t in the best of shape when they

sign up for the leagues, but he said that’s

all the more reason to give the leagues a

chance.

“The way I see it, you’re not in a gym

where everybody’s staring at you. You’re

out here having fun,” he said.

“Some larger people won’t go to a gym. It

intimidates them. So they come out here.”

But the main reason to participate, he

said, is pure fun.

“It’s just a chance to have a good time,

play a sport you like, and be with friends,” he

said. “And if you happen to get a little work-

out in, that makes it that much better.”

Miles of funIt’s a race to the fi nish at last year’s 10th Annual Project Graduation 5K/1 Mile Fun Run. The popular fundraiser is set for May 4 at the same location in front of

the Hood County YMCA. Dozens of runners pound of the pavement to support Project Graduation, an all-night safe environment for graduating seniors.

ALWAYS IN MOTION: Juan Munoz of Granbury not only is an avid bicycle rider, but also competes in triathlons that add swimming and running segments to the biking competition.

Who says you have to choose?Who says you have to choose?

Running,Running,Biking, Biking, SwimmingSwimming

BY MARK WILSONHOOD COUNTY NEWS

Sometimes, just for the fun of it, Juan Mu-

noz rides his bicycle and takes the long

way home - 65 miles from Granbury.

Munoz, who has been selling cars at Classic

Chevrolet the last 12 years, has a home in Na-

cogdoches as well as a residence in Granbury.

And when the weather is right and he’s in the

mood, he hits the road quicker than you can

spell derailleur.

Munoz, 50, has long been dedicated to

staying fit, and added bike riding to his regi-

men several years after being urged to do so

by an older brother who lives in California.

They rode together about five years ago in

the Hotter ‘N Hell Hundred in Wichita Falls,

and Munoz has participated in quite a few

other serious races.

In case that wasn’t enough to keep him fit,

lately he’s been getting more involved in tri-

athlons - events that combine running, swim-

ming and biking. He does about one or two

challenging Iron Man triathlon events a year,

including one last May in The Woodlands.

“I’m kind of recent in the cycling world, but

I think I do okay,” said Munoz, who has lived in

Granbury about 25 years.

He said that finding a nice road surface to

ride on can be a challenge, but sometimes it

all falls into place for a perfect outing.

“You’ve got to find roads that are more bi-

cycle friendly,” Munoz said. “Sometimes after

a thunderstorm you find some really good

weather. It is relaxing and (enjoyable).”

Munoz said he ran in the Boston Marathon

in 2008 and placed 320th.

When he is training to compete in an Iron

Man event, Munoz said his training will in-

clude 150-200 miles per week on his bike.

“I’m trying to improve on my swimming. I

enjoy it more lately, because I’m improving,”

Munoz said, noting that the cross-training be-

tween running, biking and swimming seems

to help him avoid injuries.

He said he uses five or six different bicycles,

but his favorite is worth about $3,000 - includ-

ing the $1,500 he paid for the wheels. He said

some top-quality bikes can cost as much as

$16,000.

CALMING TO RUNJennifer Krone of Granbury is one of Mu-

noz’s biking friends. Both are members of a lo-

cal triathlon group, Tri-Girls and Cabana Boys,

and Krone is team captain. She said Munoz is

a key local fitness figure who “inspired us.”

Krone said there are currently about 29

members, many from the Glen Rose area.

“I race with a really neat group of people,”

Krone said. “We all do it for different reasons.

We train together, we go to events together

and we have social events. I’m, by nature,

competitive. I mainly do it not to win, but to

have fun.”

Krone said the team started about four

years ago.

“It started out as an all-girl team,” Krone

said. “Soon we will be putting our wetsuits on

and jumping into Lake Granbury. It’s kind of

a quiet little group. We’ve got a really strong

team.”

Krone’s husband Peter, a Granbury sur-

geon, also is a member of the team and joins

her whenever he has time. “A lot of it is (for)

fitness. We both have pretty challenging jobs.

We can use fitness to exercise our bodies and

our minds. It’s something we look forward to

doing quite a bit.”

Krone, an analytical chemist who now does

technical sales based out of her home, said

she and her husband have both been runners

for years.

“My dad was a marathon runner. My par-

ents were both into fitness,” Krone said.

She said her husband was a longtime golfer

but in recent years has focused on biking,

running and swimming.

“Biking is definitely Pete’s strong point,”

Krone said.

While she and her husband both travel to

compete in events, they also participate in fit-

ness activities here in the community.

“We meet Tuesday and Thursday evenings

with the bike group at the square, and we re-

ally fell in love with biking,” Krone said. “Then

we discovered triathlons.”

Krone said she competed in the Vineman

triathlon last year in Northern California,

which combined a 2.4-mile swim with 112

miles on a bike and a full marathon.

“My comfort zone is running, but I got to

like biking,” she said. “For me, swimming is

the toughest. I still do running-only events.

“Running, for me, is very calming. It’s my

time to step out of the office and clear my

mind.”

If you’d like to get out and ride a bike for

fun or fitness but don’t have one handy,

the city of Granbury soon will have.

The city’s new bike rental program is sched-

uled to be in place by late May, according to

Shanna Smith, director of communication

and marketing for the city of Granbury.

Smith said the pilot program is being uti-

lized in the “busy peak summer months” in

response to numerous requests for that type

of recreational option.

“We believe it will be a great addition to

further promote the wonderful quality of life

community asset – the Hike and Bike Trail –

and further encourage alternative transporta-

tion and healthy lifestyles,” Smith said.

The one-speed cruiser road bikes will be

available to rent at the Granbury Visitor Infor-

mation Center, 116 W. Bridge St., seven days

a week.

“Renters are encouraged to enjoy the ex-

pansive ‘Moments in Time’ Hike and Bike Trail

through this program,” said Smith, who noted

that a free map of the trail will be available,

even without a bike rental.

The bikes will accommodate adults and

youths over 56 inches tall.

Smith said the bikes can be rented for $10

per hour or $20 per half day, and $5 for each

additional hour. That fee will include a hel-

met, which the bikers must wear while using

the rentals. A debit or credit card, photo ID

and rental agreement will be required for

used of the equipment. A bike lock is also in-

cluded in the rental price.

Rented bikes must be returned at least 30

minutes before closing time to the Visitor In-

formation Center.

The hours of operation for the Visitor Infor-

mation Center are: Monday-Wednesday, 8-5

p.m.; Thursday-Friday, 10 a.m.-6 p.m.; Satur-

day, 10 a.m.-5 p.m.; and Sunday, noon-4 p.m.

For more information on the bike rentals,

call Smith at 817-573-1114, or 817-894-1280.

Created two years ago, the Community

Gardens at Our Saviour Lutheran Church

continues to be a popular place for gar-

dening.

Some folks are growing vegetables like

tomatoes, squash, onions and radishes. One

garden spot was filled with flowers last year,

according to Pastor John Austin. “Someone

was looking forward to having cut flowers for

their home,” he said.

For those without garden space, the Com-

munity Gardens provides a small patch for

free.

After the ground is tilled in the spring, gar-

den spots are available on a first-come, first-

served basis.

The 52 garden spots are quickly reserved

each spring.

“We’ve got nine acres here, and we are

always looking for ways to make use of

it,” pastor John Austin said of the church

property.“The Community Gardens is another

way to utilize our space.

“It’s really ideal for people living in apart-

ments or places where they don’t have a

place to garden,” Austin noted.

At least one resident of Pecan Plantation

uses the Community Gardens. “There’s not

any deer around here to eat the crops,” Austin

said in reference to the deer population that

frequently graze residential gardens in Pecan.

Community Garden patches are divided

with mulch walkways between sites. Water is

available from several faucets installed in the

garden.

Participants agree to follow certain guide-

lines like keeping the weeds down, no illegal

plants and keeping the area free of litter.

Find relief for your Find relief for your allergy-related symptomsallergy-related symptomsT

he seasons don’t discriminate when it

comes to allergies.

For seasonal allergies, spring and

fall can be the most bothersome. Howev-

er, allergies can strike anytime during the

year, according to Dr. Salim

Bhaloo, D.O. ENT specialist in

Granbury.

Almost 40 million Ameri-

cans suffer from allergies, ac-

cording to the Asthma and

Allergy Foundation of Amer-

ica, and there is no cure.

“Allergies can be managed

with proper prevention and treatment,”

Bhaloo stated.

LIVING WITH ALLERGIESThe following allergy management tips

may help you get back to enjoying life,

both inside and outside.

■ Check pollen levels. If you live in a

high pollen zone, limit your time outdoors

on high pollen count days.

■ Limit yard work. Have someone who is

not allergic mow the lawn, or wear a face

mask and goggles if you must do it your-

self.

■ Don’t hang clothes outdoors to dry.

Wet laundry attracts pollen that will even-

tually end up indoors.

■ Stay clean. Minimize allergen expo-

sure by washing pollens off your skin and

hair after spending time outside. You

should also change your shoes before

entering the house and change clothes in-

side the front door to reduce the amount

of pollen and allergens you may bring in

the house.

■ Use a dehumidi-

fier. Because dust

mites and molds

flourish in a humid

environment, using

a dehumidifier to

remove some of the

humidity from the

air inside your home

will help reduce

indoor allergy symp-

toms.

■ Use hypoaller-

genic filters. Forget the instructions on the

package. Change your air conditioner fil-

ters monthly, using HEPA filters, if possible.

Place the used filter in a plastic garbage

bag, then dispose of the bag outdoors.

■ Use the air conditioner at night. To

keep your bedroom clean and pollen free,

close the windows and turn on the air con-

ditioning. A HEPA filter system, especially

during high pollen season, will help ensure

you breathe purified air while you sleep.

■ Take an over-the-counter antihista-

mine. This is an effective step, and fortu-

nately, many OTC allergy drugs are now

non-drowsy, long-lasting and effective.

If seasonal allergy symptoms interfere

with your daily life, visit your doctor or an

ENT (ear, nose and throat specialist) or al-

lergist who can correctly diagnose your al-

lergy and recommend ways to manage it.

An allergy test will help identify the

source of your suffering and determine the

right treatment to

control symptoms.

Treatment may

involve medica-

tions such as an-

tihistamines, Leu-

kotriene receptor

antagonists, steroid

nasal sprays, de-

congestants, or im-

munotherapy (i.e.,

allergy shots).

If you’re an allergy sufferer, knowing

how to reduce your exposure to mold and

pollen can make all the difference.

Granbury is known for a lot of things - history, the lake,

entertainment - and according to Parks and Recreation

Coordinator Josh McGinnis, it’s known for something

else.

“This is a beautiful town to walk,” said McGinnis. “There is

so much to see, and so many areas where you can go get

some exercise and even escape for a little while.”

McGinnis said plans are to expand the popular Moments

Planned skateboard park doesn’t just appeal to youthsPlanned skateboard park doesn’t just appeal to youthsBY KATHY CRUZHOOD COUNTY NEWS

Granbury city officials mostly had kids in

mind when they embarked on build-

ing a skatepark. But it’s a middle-aged

father and associate pastor who may be the

most excited about it.

Shawn Lutgen is such a fan of the extreme

sport of skateboarding, he hauls his personal

modular ramps to Granbury Baptist Church

every Wednesday night on a 16-foot trailer for

the youth group to enjoy.

When the city eventually adds an amphi-

theater to the skatepark it will soon begin to

construct, chances are that Wednesday night

youth services will be held there.

The skatepark will be located off Cross-

land Street near the soccer fields. It will also

accommodate BMX bike riders and in-line

skaters.

For Lutgen, skateparks offer a holistic ap-

proach to staying fit.

“I do it for fun, but I’m 43 years old, and so

I’ve got to do what I can to stay in shape,” he

said. “I do believe there are health benefits to

it - not just physical, but a mental and emo-

tional side. It gives a sense of community and

reaching goals and improving self-esteem. It’s

a great creative outlet.”

When the skatepark is completed some-

time this summer, Lutgen said that he and his

twin 8-year-old sons, Parker and Preston, will

be there “almost every day.” The boys are as

fanatical about the sport as their dad.

The Lutgen family frequented the skate-

park in Allen before moving to Hood County

three years ago.

“When it was first built, it was the largest

skatepark in Texas and fifth largest in the na-

tion,” Lutgen said. “So we were a little spoiled.

There was almost 40,000 square feet of skate-

able area. It was quite a price tag.”

Granbury’s won’t be nearly that large or

expensive - at least not for a while. In fact, City

Manager Wayne McKethan worries that some

people might be a little disappointed with

the first phase of the park, which will be con-

structed on a budget of $220,000. But McK-

ethan promises that the city will expand the

park as more funding becomes available.

“I think they’ll see that there is going to be a

big desire for it to be larger,” predicts Lutgen.

Lutgen said he hopes that his sons are

learning the value of putting down electronic

gadgets and picking up their heart rates.

“It’s going to go against a sedentary life-

style,” he said of those who take up the sport.

“You’re not just sitting around and playing

video games. I’ve encouraged my boys - hey,

let’s go ride our bikes. Let’s go ride our skate-

boards. That’s something they’ve seen me do

all their life.”

Lutgen added that skateboarding is a great

sport for those who don’t necessarily feel

comfortable with team sports like football or

basketball.

“Skateboarding is such an individual sport,”

he said. “It’s not up to anyone else but me as

far as how I’m going to develop.

“Being able to have a hobby that you enjoy

and at the same time, getting health benefits

from it - that’s a win-win situation.”

MARY VINSON | HOOD COUNTY NEWS

A BIG HIT: Parker Lutgen shows off his skateboarding skills as his twin brother, Preston, and others at Gran-bury Baptist Church look on. The boys’ father, Shawn Lutgen, an associate pastor at the church, brings ramps to youth group meetings at the church every Wednesday night. Once the new city skatepark opens sometime this summer, the Lutgens intend to be regulars.

A video clip was recently posted on the

CNN News website showing a televi-

sion news anchor unable to contain

her laughter when giving a report about an

obese cat swimming to lose weight.

Though the sight of the floating feline in a

life jacket may have been amusing, there is

nothing funny about the fact that those who

love their pets could unintentionally be lov-

ing them to death.

An over-abundance of food and not

enough physical activity is as harmful for

them as it is for their owners. Whether one

has two legs or four, exercise is important to

good health.

Starting today, dog owners in Hood County

will have a place to take their canine com-

panions to run off calories, get their heart

rates pumping and enjoy playtime with furry

friends.

A grand opening for Granbury’s new “Bark

Park” is scheduled for this morning. The park

is located near Moore Street, by the parking

for the ballfields.

The park features obstacles to encourage

play and exercise, water for dogs as well as

their owners and separate, fenced areas to in-

sulate the little guys from the big dogs.

Letting dogs play unleashed improves their

socialization, which improves their general

behavior, according to the website DogPark.

com.

According to the folks at Paws Parks in Little

Rock, Ark., the benefits of dog parks include

being able to socialize and exercise dogs in

a safe environment, promoting responsible

pet ownership and not having to follow leash

laws that may be in effect throughout other

parts of the community. Also, dog parks can

be a great help to pet owners who are elderly

or disabled.

The Granbury community seems to have

welcomed the idea of a dog park. The city re-

ceived more than 200 entries in its name-the-

dog-park contest.

“There was a lot of community involve-

ment,” Communications Director Shanna

Smith told the Granbury City Council the

night they voted unanimously on the win-

ning name.

All dogs who use the Bark Park must be

properly registered.
