The Macquarie River lies in the heart o New South Wales, less than sixhours drive rom Sydney, the central and mid-coast and the Canberraregion. Apart rom the many other attractions the region has to oer (seewww.rivertrails.com.au) it also oers shing enthusiasts the opportunityto travel the length o the river and experience a range o diering riverenvironments and angling challenges.

From Lake Burrendong, about 350 river-kilometres downstream toWarren, there are nearly 40 river park s, reserves and other access pointsthat you can plan your shing holiday around. Along the way you canalso enjoy the hospitality and other attractions that the communities oWellington, Dubbo, Narromine, Trangie and Warren have to oer.

Once you leave the logical starting point at Lake Burrendong, nearWellington, the river has wide meandering reaches with deep holes. Inplaces there are ast running rocky ries and in others lots o great oldhardwood snags oering prime sh habitats.

So why not treat yoursel, get o the beaten track and explore many othese less regularly visited river parks and reserves.

Large Murray cod o well over a metre were once a common catch on thisriver, with the average weight sitting at well over twenty pounds throughthe 1930s and 1940s. Today, youre more likely to catch Murray codaround the 50-60 centimetre mark, but will on occasions come acrossmuch larger sh, as well as antastic Golden perch.

Community and government eorts to restock this river as well asimprove the overall quality o this shery with habitat improvementsand measures to reduce the negative impacts rom surrounding landuseand urban developments continue to build momentum. These eorts, combined with a growing number o catch and release anglers, is helpingto secure this sh community or the long-term.

I you choose to ollow the Macquarie River Fishing Trail we hope you willrespect the golden rules o sustainable shing to help keep this antasticasset or the uture. To assist you, in later sections weve provided tips orsae catch and release shing, and also on how you can be a riversmartangler.

    Please do the right thing

Most importantly, we also ask you to play by the rules when shing theMacquarie River, and any river or that matter. Make sure that beore youthrow a line in you have a current shing licence and are amiliar with thelatest rules and regulations. These you will nd at any o the local tackleand bait stores and also on-line through the recreational sheries part othe NSW Department o Primary Industries web site.

TIP: BEFORE YOU FISH MAKE SURE YOU HAVE ACURRENT NSW FISHING LICENCE AND ARE FAMILIAR WITH

    Murray coD (Maccullochella peelii peelii)

As the largest reshwater sh in Australia, the Murray cod is an icon o theMurray-Darling Basin, important in Aboriginal mythology, and the mostsought ater native species by recreational anglers. While listed nationally asa threatened species it can be caught in NSW but make sure you know therules relating to this and ollow them careully.

While they can grow to over 100 kilograms and 1.8 metres in length, andlive to over 40 years o age, specimens o this size are very rare these days.Even so, the larger specimens (over 5 kilos) are the best breeders, andshould be returned to the water unharmed as soon as possible.

Murray cod preer habitat with cover, especially allen trees or snags, andtheir typical diet consists o smaller sh, yabbies and rogs. The speciesmakes an upstream migration o up to 120 kilmetres to spawn (highlightingthe importance o shways on our weirs) and usually returns to the very

same snag, year ater year.Although ormerly common and widespread throughout most o the Basin,Murray cod is now patchily distributed and in much lower numbers. Themain reasons or this include illegal and overshing, loss o snags, weirspreventing migration, cold water discharged rom the base o large damsand altered river fow patterns.

Be aware! On the Macquarie River there are alsoTrout cod (an endangered species) which can sometimes

be tricky to distinguish rom Murray cod.See page 9 or comparative photographs and inormation.

    GolDeN PercH (Macquaria ambiguaambigua)

Golden perch (Yellowbelly) can grow to over 20 kilograms and 75centimetres in length, and live to over 25 years o age. Caught specimensare typically less than 4 kilograms and 40 centimetres long.

This species usually preers warmer, slow fowing rivers with adequate

cover such as snags and reedbeds. It is carnivorous with a diet consistingo small sh, shrimps, yabbies and insect larvae.

Spawning is usually triggered by rises in water level and temperature inspring and summer, resulting in upstream (and sometimes downstream)movements o up to 1000 kilometres, i weirs and dams dont stop them.

Golden perch is widely distributed throughout the Basin, although itis now uncommon in some rivers. Many recreational sheries or thisspecies are based on extensive stocking programs. The regulation o riversand construction o over 1000 weirs and dams in the Basin has aectedthe species migration and spawning habits, and cold water releasedbelow large dams has severely depleted some populations.

    trout coD (Maccullochella macquariensis)

(Listed as Endangered under the Fisheries Management Act 1994)

Trout cod is listed as an endangered species under both national and NSWlegislation, and any sh caught must be released immediately, preerablywithout removal rom the water.

Because Trout cod was only recognised as a distinct species (to Murraycod) in the last 40 years, some aspects o its biology and behaviourremain unanswered. It was rst ound in the Macquarie River nearly 200years ago. Although it can grow to over 15 kilograms and 85 centimetres, adults are commonly less than 5 kilograms. The key eatures thatdistinguish Trout cod rom Murray cod are a dark stripe through the eye,a blue-grey (as opposed to yellow-green) speckled body pattern, and an

overhanging upper jaw (see opposite).Trout cod preer deep pools with instream cover such as snags andboulders, although in some rivers where they exists along with Murraycod, they tend to occupy slightly aster fowing areas, urther out rom thebank. Their diet consists o small sh, shrimps, yabbies, dragonfy larvae(mudeyes) and aquatic insect larvae. Adults will migrate bet ween 20-60kilometres beore returning to their home snag.

TIP: TAKE SPECIAL CARE IF YOU CATCH ONE OF THEENDANGERED OR THREATENED FISH SPECIES. RELEASE THEM

    UNHARMED AS SOON AS POSSIBLE.

Trout cod used to be widespread in the southern Murray-Darling Basin, but now only three sel-sustaining populations remain in the wild. Itseagerness to take a bait or lure has contributed to its dramatic decline, together with desnagging, introduced sh (including Redn), increasedsediment deposition in rivers and cold water released rom dams(cold water pollution). The good news or Trout cod is that State Waterannounced in early 2012 that cold water pollution rom Burrendong Damwould be rectied within 2-3 years.

    silver PercH (Bidyanus bidyanus)

(Listed as Vulnerable under the Fisheries Management Act 1994)

While historically widespread over much o the Murray-Darling Basin(apart rom the upper reaches), Silver perch has now declined over mosto its range. The three main reasons or the decline o this species arethe disruption o migratory and breeding patterns as a result o dams,

weirs and fow patterns, the impacts o carp and redn, and cold waterreleased rom the base o large dams.

Silver perch can grow to 8 kilograms and 50 centimetres, althoughcommonly specimens are less than 2 kilograms and 35 centimetres. They preer similar habitats to Golden perch and Murray cod lowland,slow-fowing rivers.

Silver perch are omnivorous, preerring aquatic plants, snails, shrimpsand aquatic insect larvae. The species migrates upstream in spring andsummer to spawn, oten orming large schools.

Silver perch is listed as a threatened species in NSW, and any sh caughtmust be released immediately. However, the species is widely stocked in

arm dams and reservoirs, and shing in these waterbodies (such as LakeBurrendong) is permitted, subject to size and bag limits.

(Protected under the Fisheries Management Act 1994)

Although Freshwater catsh (Eeltail catsh) are usually less than2 kilograms and 50 centimetres, they have been known to reach nearly7 kilograms and 90 centimetres.

Preerring slow-fowing streams and lakes, the species spawns in spring

and summer when water temperatures reach 20-24 degrees. Unlikethe other catchable species in the Basin, Freshwater catsh orm a nestconsisting o an oval depression, constructed mainly rom pebbles andgravel, which is guarded by the male. It is a carnivorous species, eatingshrimps, yabbies, small sh, snails and aquatic insects, and eeds mainlyat dusk and in the early evening. Freshwater catsh is also a relativelysedentary species and rarely moves more than 5 kilometres.

Historically Freshwater catsh were widespread throughout the Basin, although most riverine populations have declined dramatically in thelast 40 years. Several threats have contributed to this decline, includingbarriers to movement, cold water discharges rom large dams, increasedsalinity, changes to natural fow patterns, and the impacts o rednand carp (which is thought to destroy nests due to its bottom-eeding

    behaviour).

In the Macquarie River it is illegal to catch Freshwater catsh, although itmay be taken rom stocked private dams and Lake Burrendong.

    reDfiN (Perca fuviatilis)

Redn (English perch) is native to Europe and was introduced to Australiain the 1860s as an angling sh. The species commonly grows to 1-2kilograms and 20-45 centimetres although 10 kilogram specimens havebeen recorded, and can live to over 20 years.

Redn preer still or slow-fowing waters such as lakes, billabongsand slower moving rivers, especially where these areas provide good

shelter such as snags or aquatic vegetation. It is a carnivorous andhighly predatory species, eating a wide variety o sh and invertebrates.Spawning occurs in spring when the water temperature reaches12 degrees.

Redn are widespread across the Murray-Darling Basin. They are avoracious predator o other sh and can quickly decimate populationso other, more desirable species. Redn also carry the viral disease EHN,which can seriously inect native species such as Silver perch, Murray codand especially Macquarie perch. Its ability to rapidly populate waterwaysalso results in unwanted competition with native species (notably Murraycod and Macquarie perch) or habitat and ood.

    Macquarie PercH (Macquaria australasica)

Sadly, this species is no longer ound along the Macquarie River. It wasrst described scientically in 1824 based on a specimen caught nearBathurst. Early records suggest it was most common urther up theMacquarie above where Burrendong Dam sits now but there are alsoaccounts o it being caught in the Bell River which joins the Macquarieat Wellington. It apparently disappeared rom this part o the Macquariearound the end o World War II and urther up the river in the 1960s.

    Photograph: Gunter Schmida

As history on the Macquarie indicates, the species is typically ound in thecool, upper reaches o the Murray-Darling system, although most o theremaining populations are small and isolated. The main reasons or thedramatic decline o Macquarie perch include the impacts o competitorslike trout and redn (including exposure to the EHN virus carr ied bythe latter), sedimentation, clearing o riparian vegetation, barriers tomigration such as weirs and dams, and cold-water discharges rom large

    dams.

Macquarie perch can grow to 3.5 kilograms and around 45 centimetres, although typical specimens are usually less than 1 kilogram and 35centimetres. A shy and docile species, spawning occurs rom October toDecember. Adults occupy a home site during the day, and move aboutto eed at dawn, dusk and night-time. Macquarie perch eat shrimps andsmall aquatic insect larvae such as mayfies, caddis fies and midges.

Macquarie perch is listed as an endangered species under both nationaland NSW legislation, and any sh caught must be released immediately.I you catch one on the Macquarie River the world will want to knowabout it!

    carP (Cyprinus carpio)

While carp (Common carp, European carp, Koi carp) were rst introducedinto Australia in the 1800s, it was not until the 1970s when huge populationexplosions occurred in the Murray-Darling Basin. In some rivers they nowmake up over 95% o the total weight o all sh species!

Typically, adult carp weigh about 4-5 kilograms and are up to 40 centimetres

long. Signicantly larger specimens (up to 60 kilograms and 120 centimetres)have been recorded. Carp can live up to 17 years. They are omnivorous, eeding on crustaceans, aquatic insects, molluscs, zooplankton and, sometimes plant material.

Carp are typically ound in s till or sluggish parts o rivers, lakes andfoodplains, especially those areas with silt bottoms and abundant aquaticvegetation.

A major reason or its successul introduction into the Basin is its widetolerance to a range o natural conditions, including temperature, pH, lowoxygen, high turbidity and high toxic (pollution) levels. It is also a very mobilespecies, migrating both up and down rivers throughout the year.

Carp impact negatively on native species in a number o ways, including byincreasing turbidity (muddiness) o water as a result o their bottom-eedinghabits that dislodge sediments and also native plants, competing with native

species or ood and habitat, and promoting the risk o parasites (especiallyAnchor worm) in native sh. It is illegal to use live carp as bait.

lookiNG after fisH HaBitatOver the past 50 years experts tell us that sh numbers across theMurray-Darling Basin have declined signicantly and that compared towhen Europeans arrived here theres only about 10% o what we usedto have.

There are many reasons or this decline in numbers and or some species

(like the Macquarie perch disappearing rom this river see earlier)moving into the threatened and endangered categories.

    HaBitat DestructioN loss of sNaGs

Habitat destruction is a primary cause o these declines and this takesmany orms. Historically some rivers had the snags removed to helpnavigation by paddle steamers, or rewood or or recreational useslike water skiing. We now know how vital these are and programs areunderway to re-snag many inland rivers to help native sh populationsrecover.

Research has shown that most Murray cod are ound within a metre o a

snag and streams with snags usually have greater numbers o native sh.We also know that snags provide important spawning sites or native sh(Murray cod or example at tach their eggs to snags), places or young shto hide rom predators, and to help protect the river bed and bank romerosion.

    fisH NeeD HealtHy river BaNks

Healthy rivers make more sh and or this to occur we need wellvegetated banks. Riverside native vegetation is a vital par t o the havingmore sh in the river. This vegetation drops insects and leaves into theriver and these are eaten by sh, or by the things some sh like to eat,

such as yabbies and shrimps. As trees age they all into the river andmake instant sh homes snags.

In contrast, river banks that are bare due to stock trampling, overgrazingor vehicle trac (see photos below) are prime candidates or erosion andthis soil, once washed into the r iver, makes the water muddy, reducingaquatic plant growth, and silting up the river. All o these things are bador native sh. Aquatic plants are a ood source and a place or young sh

to hide rom predators, and siltation lls the big holes where most shlike to hang out.

So, when you go shing remember this when youre using dirt t racks orlaunching your boat o a beach dont rip up the ground as that soil willend up in the river.

Another issue is that the dams, weirs and even some road crossingsweve installed, stop sh migrating. Many o our native sh species

are migratory while others routinely go looking or mates duringthe breeding season, better ood opportunities or to escape adverseconditions. I not allowed to do this, primarily it reduces breeding success, meaning less sh to catch.

These days redundant or unsae weirs are being looked at with a viewto their removal in order to help our native sh and we are increasinglyseeing poorly designed (rom the sh migration perspec tive) weirs, culverts and road crossings modied to assist sh move about more(see photos on the next page). For larger weirs, sh ladders (shways)that incorporate carp traps are increasingly being installed such as onMarebone weir near the bottom end o the Macquarie River system.

    1. Practice catch and release shing dont take more than you need or

    2. Fish according to the rules, and make sure you have a current shinglicence. The shing rules and regulations in NSW are available romplaces where you can purchase a licence and also on-line rom theNSW Department o Primary Industries web site.

    3. Dont trespass on private property. I in doubt, dont go there.

catcH aND release fisHiNGfor tHe futureThere is a rapidly growing trend amongst recreational anglers to practicecatch and release shing in order to saeguard sh resources, and thepastime o shing. I you decide to sh or the uture there are some tipsyou should be aware o to maximise the chances o the sh you catch

being released saely and unharmed. Below, weve set out some o thosetips. How sh are handled and in what part o the body they are hookedhas the greatest infuence on the survival o released sh. Survival canalso be improved by the use o sh-riendly equipment.

    Hook removal:

Long-nosed pliers or a hook-out device will enable hooks, especially ithey are barbless, to be removed more readily and minimise damage.Take particular care i the hook is close to, or in the gills. Cutting the line, then liting the gill cover and removing the hook rom there will oten bebetter than trying to remove it through the mouth. I the hook is out osight in the throat or gut do not try to remove it. Cut the line leaving a ew

centimeters o line outside the mouth.

    Knotless landing nets:

A knotless landing net should be used to land all sh. There are nowmany styles and brands o landing nets on the market which are suitableor landing medium to large-sized sh. Knotted landing nets should beavoided as they remove the protective slime rom sh and damage scalesand your hooks are much more likely to get tangled in knotted nets.

TIP: DITCH YOUR OLD KNOTTED LANDING NET FORA NEW ENVIRONET TYPE REDUCES TANGLES AND

    PROTECTS YOUR FISH FROM DAMAGE.

    Fish handling:

A ga cannot be used to take any sh in inland waters. Fish grips orbogas can be used to assist in restraining a sh, however care should betaken in how these are used. Always ensure when using boga grips thatthe wrist lanyard is securely attached. I weighing sh with a sh gripavoid hanging the sh vertically by their jaw or gills. Alternatively, weighsh in a landing net or container and subtract the weight o the net/container to get an accurate weight. Fish grips are especially useul orsh with sharp teeth or spines, but hanging a large sh vertically is likelyto cause serious injury or death to the sh.

Casting lures in the Macquarie River is one o the most rewarding o alltechniques, with spectacular assaults rom native sh oten occurr ing.

    Spinner baits

Spinner baits are a antastic search option that are capable o being shedat almost any depth that the angler desires, whether it be burning themacross submerged reed beds with a medium to ast retrieve, or sunk

deeper. They are relatively snag-riendly as the hook sits upright uponretrieve. Most anglers opt to t a secondary stinger hook to increasethe chance o a solid connection to any sh encountered, with ounce, and even smaller ounce, double Colorado bladed spinner baits havingresulted in plenty o quality captures on the Macquarie River. Otheroptions such as tandem bladed spinners, and even buzz baits all accountor catches when shed correctly.

A smart strategy when using spinner baits to cast in a V-shaped patternaround likely sh habitats so as to systematically cover as much wateras possible. Slowing the retrieve will also leave the oering in the shsstrike zone or as long as possible.

    Worms

Worms are a great all round bait that will help you catch nearly everyrecreational angling target species in the Macquarie River. Use either ahook rigged with a number o small garden or tiger worms, or better still

rigged with a large lively scrub worm. This common and traditional baitremains one o the best go to options and is a dependable sh catcher.

    Grubs

Bardi grubs can be purchased at a variety o tackle stores across theCentral West o NSW, or collected by those with a bit o know how. They are the larval stage o the Grey goat moth and are well known as aantastic bait or those wanting to catch a Murray cod. Many trophy shhave been accounted or using a Bardi grub rigged on a simple bait set upwith running sinker and swivel, or perhaps even shed weightless i thegrub is large enough to sink reely.

    Shrimp

Shrimp are excellent bait, and will also catch any angling target speciesin the Macquarie, although Murray cod and Yellowbelly are particularlyond o a well-rigged shrimp. A technique used by locals is to place twosmall shrimp on a hook back-to-back, both hooked through the tail.Productive baits that can be used in shrimp traps include dog biscuits anda little soap.

    Yabbies

Yabbies are popular bait that can be shed live and whole, or partially, even ater being rozen. Murray cod and almost all native sh nd it hardto resist a yabby, with some anglers choosing to remove the nippers

ater squashing the head to not only make the bait easier or the sh toget it in it s mouth, but to also create a potent burly o entrails leadingany predatory sh to the bait. Be aware that there are restrictions andconditions on the use o yabby traps in this region see opposite.
