FISHERMAN’S NET Saint Peter’s Episcopal Church Lakewood, Ohio Volume 50, Number 05 January 2017 THANK YOU IS NOT ENOUGH! On Sunday, January 8, we will mark a sad/happy moment at Saint Peter's. The Rev. Canon Doctor Nancy H. Wittig will preach and celebrate at both liturgies on the Feast of the Baptism of Jesus. This will mark her last official Sunday as "assisting priest" on our staff, a calling she has exercised faithfully since the summer of 2006. Nancy will enter into "full" retirement after 10 years of partial retirement. We will fete Nancy on the 8th with a parish breakfast and coffee hour in her honor. Please plan to attend, and to help with the festivities in some way (info coming). Nancy is not actually going anywhere. She and Pam will continue to worship with and among us. After a brief full hiatus, Nancy will eventually exercise some kind of ministry here, to be determined, of her choice. She will no longer have to be here for every liturgy every Sunday, nor will she have to attend all the meetings and plan the adult forums. We will be unbelievably fortunate to have her, along with John Keller, as "retired priest associates." Not many parishes get to have so much ordained talent in the pews! When Nancy first arrived here 11 years ago, she was very clear. She wanted to be retired. She had put in 30+ challenging years of ministry as a pioneer woman priest in New Jersey and Pennsylvania. I was delighted to welcome her. Many months later, refreshed and renewed, she was ready to get back in the swing. She and Pam found a warm and welcoming home here. I badly needed help! The Vestry enthusiastically embraced my proposal that we appoint Nancy as our "retired assisting priest." We initially anticipated her appointment would be for about two years, until the parish was able again to support financially a full-time curate. Unfortunately, capital campaigns, building projects, the financial crisis and recession, and the general economic malaise of the last decade altered our plans. Nancy's two years stretched to over ten. During those ten years, I as a rector and we as a parish have taken advantage of Nancy's generosity. We paid her the salary equivalent of a one day per week job. She gave us far more than that! She has shared fully with me in liturgical duties, taken a considerable share of the pastoral care load, been a counselor, advisor and pastor to me and the staff, and been primary pastor and friend to many of you. Were it not for Nancy's presence, I can tell you quite seriously, I would have been called away (or carted away!) years ago! Nancy has been an indispensable colleague for us all. And so, on January 8 we will not say "good- bye." We will say, "THANK YOU!" Thank you to a good and faithful priest, a pioneering and prophetic spiritual leader, and a wonderful soul. We will pray to God for her continued long and healthy retirement, and we will look forward to whatever new ministry God next summons her. And, while I'm thanking people, let me say a huge THANK YOU to all of you who, in so many ways, made Kelly Aughenbaugh's ordination on December 1 such a powerful experience. Your generosity for the liturgy, hospitality, and ordination gift was truly astounding. Your continued generosity in support of her ministry at St. John's, Ohio City, is moving. Yet again, the people of this parish have revealed themselves as kind, welcoming, and extraordinarily generous. So, as I do in so many of these front-page articles, I say "thank you." This time, however, the words seem paltry compared to the people and actions for which I am grateful. "Thank you" seems hardly enough, but those are the only words available to me. God bless us all in this new year. Your Colleague in Christ Jesus, Keith

And Another Thing…

I hereby summon all members-in-good standing of Saint Peter's Church to the Annual Meeting of the parish on Sunday, January 22nd. There will be one liturgy that morning at 9:30 a.m., followed by our traditional pot-luck brunch and the business meeting. The principal business is to elect four new adult vestry-persons and one teen vestry person, to hear the reports of the parish leadership, and to receive in-depth briefings on parish finances and the plans for building renovations. Elsewhere in this "NET" you will find information about the nominees for Vestry. Please study this, pray for these folks, and thank them for their willingness to serve. It is still possible for persons to be nominated, or to nominate themselves. To learn how to do this, please give me a call. Please plan to attend and bring a dish to share.

Monthly Outreach Partners: A Decade in Review

We are at the end of our tenth year of monthly outreach partners where we have learned about, prayed for and donated to organizations that are sponsored by a parishioner. Thirty-eight (38!) different and amazing organizations have been outreach partners. These have been local, national and even international organizations. Every one of them had a parishioner who was involved and wanted to share their interest and involvement. Every one of these organizations received a generous donation of the loose plate collection for their month. Our total loose plate donations this past decade has been $182,197.45 to date, with December not yet completed. For each calendar year, we have six organizations that are almost always sponsored – The Bishop’s Appeal, St Luke’s Episcopal Church, St. Peter’s Childcare, Lakewood Community Service Center, Waverly (Watterson Lake) Elementary School and St. Peter’s Community Meal. These are organizations that we have long standing relationships with and commitment. Outreach partners for the other six months of the year are suggested by parishioners. The only real requirement is that the parishioner is actively involved with the organization and wants to share their interest and experiences. Are you involved with a charity or group that you would like to introduce to St. Peter’s? Do you give your time or talent to a local or international, large or small, well-known or maybe not so well known organization? Consider sharing your organization with St. Peter’s. The Outreach Committee is currently assembling the calendar for 2017 Monthly Outreach Partners. If you have a suggestion, please contact Monica Owen 216-226-3680 or [email protected]

January Outreach Focus of the Month:

Pockets Across the Ocean

I have just recently started a company to give back to Ghana. The company is called Pockets Across The Ocean( PATO) and began in October 2016. This idea came about during my 6th time to Ghana, Africa. Each time, I’ve learned something new. However, some things remained constant: the bright smiles on every Ghanaian’s face, the taste of the amazing food, the exuberant colors of the countries nature, and the love that filled Ghanaian’s hearts. Some Ghanaians live in such poor communities, yet they were SO rich in their love for others. This inspired me to want to do more. I wanted to share the countries beauty with my friends and family at home; who couldn’t travel to Ghana and experience it first-hand. I decided to use fabric from Ghana to make pocket T-shirts. For each purchase made, 20% of the purchase would be sent back to Ghana. The money will be used to build and support Vision of Hope Foster Care Center for children orphaned due to HIV/AIDS. Whether it is a child who was neglected because they have HIV/AIDS, or they have lost a parent because of the infection, Vision of Hope Foster Care Center will support their every need. Children will be able to attend school, get three warm meals, clothing, access to health care and even a bed to sleep on. All of these things are free of cost to the child. The foster care center is projected to begin being built in January 2018. I am working with my brother (Tom McHale), a friend from college and a local friend in Ghana. Right now, we have a small plot of land and we are looking to purchase more and then begin building. From there we will grow. We originally wanted to start an orphanage, but after speaking with a social welfare officer, we learned that they are closing down all orphanages as they have turned into for-profit businesses. We are a small, but mighty team, and are open to any help possible. If you are looking to get involved, please feel free to email me at [email protected].

Planned Giving Message

As we finished the season of Advent, the season of hope and anticipation, we anticipated good times for ourselves and our loved ones. Christmas has come and gone, the New Year is upon us, and we are now entering in the season of Epiphany, where all will be revealed. This is a good time to anticipate the future for yourself and your loved ones. This is a good time to review your financial situation and contemplate making special gifts. If you are concerned about income tax obligations, consider giving appreciated property, such as stock or mutual funds to our church. It is also a good time to review your will or make your first one. Each of us should have a will regardless of how much we have. Have you met with your attorney and do you have a current viable will? If you don’t have one … Is it because you don’t think you have that much to bother with? Is it because you don’t think you are old enough to worry about such things? Or is it something you have been meaning to do and you just haven’t done yet. If you have a will, is it current and does it reflect your present wishes? Here are the circumstances that make it vital to update your will:

You want to name a different executor, trustee, or guardian.

Your assets have significantly increased or decreased in value.

You’ve moved to another state. Your situation or beneficiary’s situation

has changed. Has your family changed because of marriage, divorce, birth, adoption, or death?

You want to include a gift to St. Peter’s Episcopal Church and perhaps others in your will. Consider leaving a percentage of your estate or the balance remaining after bequests are distributed to your loved ones.

The estate tax law has changed. There are various ways you can make a Legacy Gift. Since 85 % of all Planned Gifts come to through wills, make your will, update your will, and when you do so add a gift, be it a % or a dollar amount to St. Peter’s Episcopal Church, Lakewood, Ohio.

St. Peter’s welcomes special gifts for endowment, capital needs, and special programs now and always. For more information or help, please contact Tom Andrews at 440-333-3684 or via email at [email protected]. Tom is part of the Diocesan Planned Giving Council.

Children’s Programming

Sunday Morning Children's programming will be back to our normal schedule on Sunday, January 8th with Family Time beginning at 9:45am.

Become a Foyer Groupie!

What are Foyer groups? They’re small, social gatherings of parishioners who meet every month or so for company, conversation, and a bottle of wine or two. This is a great way to get to know your fellow parishioners outside of the church! We switch up the groups each gathering, so you'll meet new people as well as strengthen the friendships you have already made. Whether you are new to St. Peter’s, or have been with the church for decades, we'd love to add you to this diverse and dynamic social group. We’re looking for everyone - singles, couples, young, old, with children or without - to join us. *Everyone* is welcome! Please sign up on the list at the back of the church. Deadline to sign up for Foyer Groups is Sunday, January 8th. The first gatherings will commence in February. Still hesitant or want to know more information? Please contact Amanda Wolf at 440-666-7984 or [email protected]. We hope you’ll join us!

Feast of the Epiphany

The Feast of the Epiphany will be celebrated at 6:00 p.m. on Friday, January 6th with Holy Eucharist. This is when the Magi saw a bright light and followed it to Bethlehem. There they found the Christ child and

presented him with gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh. The service will take place in the chapel. from our Curate… With Thanks!

Dear St. Peter’s Family, Thank you for your generous outpouring of time, energy, hospitality and support leading up to and during my ordination in December!! It was an

emotion filled evening and I was overwhelmed by your support and care. Thank you! The day of my ordination was good, at about 6:00 pm I told my family I was starting to feel anxious and nervous. I got to church, put on my alb, went to the library/lounge and waited for instruction on where to line up and when to process. At the procession, I looked up from singing and looked at the congregation. I was overcome with surprise at how many people were there and by who I saw! There were people from my home parish, people from neighboring churches, mentors from different times in my life and many of you-people of St. Peters! It meant so much to see so many of you there. We celebrate events in the life of the church as a community and it was encouraging and reminded me that we do ministry together, that we are not alone. Even those of you who couldn’t make it, sent well wishes and prayers which were much appreciated and felt! The entire liturgy was emotion-filled for me and I thought once we went to the Undercroft for some food and drinks that I’d get a chance to visit people and thank them for coming. Instead, I was totally surprised at the unexpected gift that was presented to me from the people of St. Peter’s! The emotion welled up again. I was so grateful for your time and

being there already, that another gift was not on my mind! I don’t feel like “thank you” is a good enough way for me to describe the amount of thankfulness and joy I felt during the time of and surrounding my ordination. After the ordination people told me how wonderful it was and that they were welcomed and enjoyed the party after in the undercroft. That is all thanks to you because St. Peter’s as the host church had a lot of responsibilities. Thank you to Fr. Keith and all of the staff of St. Peter’s, thank you to Tom for your help in preparing for the liturgy, thank you to Michael and the choir, thank you to the hospitality team, thank you to the chancel guild, thank you to all those who served in and helped with the liturgy… there are so many people to thank! This NET article is inspired by all of you, St. Peter’s. Thank you for the tangible ways you have shown your care and generosity. Thank you for the intangible ways you do too, it is felt. I’m thankful to God to get to serve with you and look forward to continuing. I’ve said this before, but it’s worth mentioning, your love and support also encourages me to give that out to those I encounter. That is how we are to live as a people of God- loving and helping one another. Thank you!

In Peace and Love, Kelly

Altar Flowers Worship in our church is an experience of beauty. Every element of the service—the architecture, the altar hangings, the music, the people in the pews, and more—draws us closer to God by inviting us to

bring our very best and laying it upon the altar. The flowers that bedeck that altar are an important and beautiful symbol of what we offer to God in our worship. Altar Flowers have an added dimension to the worship… not only do they create beauty, they are then given to shut-ins, folks celebrating momentous occasions and special events, or just someone who needs a “pick-me-up!” Every member of the parish is invited to contribute to the beauty of our worship by giving the altar flowers on a particular Sunday to the glory of God and in memory, thanksgiving, or celebration for people or events that are important. St. Peter’s has quite a number of Sundays available throughout the year (especially in January) for you to place flowers at the altar. If you would like to make a gift of altar flowers, you may do so by contacting the office at 216-226-1772. Seasonal flower arrangements are $50. Call or stop by the office to reserve a date. (Flowers are not on the

altar during the Lenten Season.) Thank you in advance for your generosity and for contributing to the beauty of our worship.

The Call to the Annual Meeting In accordance with the Canons of the Episcopal Diocese of Ohio, and the Code of Regulations of Saint Peter’s Church, I hereby announce that the Annual Meeting of Saint Peter's Parish, Lakewood, Ohio, will take place on Sunday, January 22, 2017, beginning with a celebration at 9:30 a.m. of the Holy Eucharist. E-Mail Addresses Needed St. Peter’s is collecting e-mail addresses for all of our parishioners. With the rising costs of postage and paper, St. Peter’s has begun collecting e-mail addresses, and distributing notices via e-mail rather than snail mail. E-mails will also be distributed to announce special events, news of particular interest that needs to be distributed in a timely fashion, and to announce changes in the church calendar. If you have an e-mail address, and would like to be on St. Peter’s distribution list, please send an e-mail to the office at [email protected].

The Bad Weather Protocol Sunday services at St. Peter's will NOT be cancelled due to inclement weather unless governing authorities declare a state of emergency. However, we will cancel such things as children and youth programs, choir, and adult education in the event of really bad weather. The decision about cancellation will be made at 7:00 a.m. on Sunday mornings, with postings on our website and Facebook page, and a message on the church voice-mail. Weekday events will be cancelled if weather is severe enough to close the Lakewood Schools.

Share the Blessings

First, I would like to say, thank you very much to all who participated in this year’s Share the Blessings project.

We had a tremendous outpouring of generosity. Our children were “swooped” up in just two weeks! Second, with the Cleveland Metropolitan Schools closed on Thursday December 15th, the date of the Share the Blessings party, our party has been cancelled. We will be taking the gift bags to the children as soon as possible. I have been in contact with the principal and assistant principal to make that happen. Third, for anyone one wanting a tax form, I will have them to you by the end of January at the absolute latest. Let me know if you need a form. And, finally, I would like to thank you for your understanding and support with regards to the party and gift-giving. Your generosity is truly appreciated. Thanks for another great year; I look forward to next year! May you all have a very Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. ~ Jennifer Williams

Youth Mission Trip: Hosanna Industries

Hosanna Industries, Inc. is a faith-rooted, 501 (c)3 non-profit organization in southwestern Pennsylvania. The mission includes new construction and repair/rehabilitation services for low income homeowners; leading volunteers in disaster recovery; and training young people in the trade skills to give them a hope for the future. Our typical client household last year had an annual income of less than twenty thousand dollars. Since our founding in 1990 Hosanna Industries has provided over fifty million dollars’ worth of charitable work to the community for around fifteen million dollars. Hosanna Industries depends on the generosity of others to complete our work. When every family lives in dignity, every roof is tight, and every furnace burns safely; when no one goes to sleep cold or hungry or scared; when every child has a yard and a kitchen and a bed- then we’ll put down our hammers and demonstrate our faith in some other way. Until then, the green trucks are heading down the road to the next project. Saint Peter's Youth (& other generations) Mission Trip. There are five open positions on the Vestry; four adult positions and one Youth position. Voting members of the congregation will choose their representatives at the Annual Meeting to be held on January 22nd. This year, the Nominating Committee, after speaking with almost thirty potential candidates, is presenting four adult and one teen candidates who have stepped forward to answer the call to serve on St. Peter’s Vestry. We thank each and every one who responded to the Nominating Committee’s call. The following are being presented at the Annual Meeting for election: Naomi Opdycke, Martha Taylor, Brad Vandrasik, Kevin Wisser and Annika Mitzlaff. We thank them for standing for election. Please take a moment to read the brief bios as you discern their candidacy. Naomi Opdycke

I have been a member of St. Peter's Church for over 50 years and have served in a number of ways, including Vestry, search committees and Sunday school teaching, a very long time ago. Currently, I am active in Wednesday morning Bible study, Community meal program, and St. Cecilia’s Guild. I

would be happy to serve on the vestry again. Martha Taylor

Hi! I’m Martha Taylor. I have been a member of St. Peter’s for 51 years! I arrived in Lakewood at age four when my father took the calling to be the rector of our church from 1965-1985. I have been there ever since. My husband, Ken and I have four beautiful children in their twenties. We reside in Rocky River. I have

been on the vestry three times and have held the position of Junior and senior warden. I stay active in the church today as a verger, acolyte, reader, chalice bearer, and bell ringer. I am also a member of the altar guild. In my spare time, I design and create costumes for Rocky River High School.

Brad Vandrasik

Brad Vandrasik has been a member of St. Peter's since 1998. Brad is a member of the choir (and has been since 1998) and has served on the building committee and the vestry. He is a software engineer who works for Automation Software and Engineering in Twinsburg. Brad, his

wife Deb, and his sons, Chris and Pete, live in Olmsted Falls. He is excited to continue overseeing the process of St. Peter's new construction that was begun during his last term on the vestry. Kevin Wisser

My name is Kevin Wisser and I work at B&F Capital Markets in Cleveland, where I'm Vice President of Technology. Prior to joining B&F, I worked at KeyBank for eight years. My wife Angela and I joined St. Peter’s in 2015. We have been

married since 2007, and this year we had our first child, Alex. I currently serve as a Lay Eucharistic Visitor and Usher. I also serve as a Board Member at Large for our homeowners’ association.

Annika Rose Mintzlaff has been a member of St. Peter's Lakewood for 16 years. She has helped in the Infant, Toddler, and Preschool Sunday School rooms over the years. She is a volunteer each summer at our Vacation Bible School. Annika most

recently attended Journey to the Center in 2016 and was confirmed by Bishop Persell in September. Annika Rose is a sophomore at Lakewood High School where she takes Honors and AP classes. She is also a member of the Rangerettes and performs at football games. In addition to school, she enjoys ballet and has been a competitive baton twirler for eleven years. She is very excited to be asked to become part of the Vestry.

Thank you, thank you!

Sometimes we forget to say the simplest two words…thank you! To everyone who helped last month, during one of the busiest liturgical times of the year, we would like to extend our deepest thanks. From our Chancel Guild, to the readers, acolytes, chalice bears, and cruifers, to the bell ringers, vergers, lay Eucharistic visitors, flower delivery folks, and counters, you have done a tremendous job. Not just this month, but throughout the entire year. We would also like to thank all those who helped with the Christmas Eve drop-in pageant, especially those who steamed and prepped the costumes to the ushers who assisted the kids. To our Choir, ushers and anyone we’ve forgotten, thank you for making a daunting task flow very smoothly and seemingly effortlessly!

From the editor: Each year we get requests for the

following two articles; therefore, as this is the new

year, we are running these and including a copy of

the Emergency Contact Sheet.

ICE

In Case of Emergency

An ICE storm is blanketing the U.S.! An “In Case of Emergency” campaign, that is… Emergencies are prevalent in everyone’s lives and we hope that when we are in need, we have the tools to deal with every emergency and crisis. The importance of having emergency numbers available to first responders is tantamount to having first class treatment and care when you need it. We all carry our mobile phones with names and numbers stored in its memory but nobody, other than ourselves, knows which of these numbers belong to our closest family or friends. If we were to be involved in an accident or were taken ill, the people attending us would have our mobile phone but wouldn’t know who to call. While there may be hundreds of numbers stored in our phone, which one is the contact person in case of an emergency? When seconds matter, this information may be vital. Hence the “ICE” (In Case of Emergency) Campaign. The concept of “ICE” is catching on quickly. It is a method of contact during emergency situations. As cell phones are carried by the majority of the population, all you need to do is store the phone number of a contact person/s who should be contacted during emergency under the name “ICE” (In Case Of Emergency). The idea was thought up by a paramedic who found that when he went to the scenes of accidents, there were always mobile phones with patients, but they didn’t know which number to call. He therefore thought that it would be a good idea if there was a nationally recognized name for this purpose. In an emergency situation, emergency service personnel and hospital staff would be able to quickly contact the right person by simply dialing the number you have stored as “ICE”. Follow these hints to get the best out of ICE:

1. Make sure the person whose name and number you are giving has agreed to be your ICE partner.

2. Make sure your ICE partner has a list of people they should contact on your behalf - including your place of work.

3. Make sure your ICE person’s number is one that’s easy to contact, for example a home number could be useless in an emergency if the person works full time.

4. Make sure your ICE partner knows about any medical conditions that could affect your emergency treatment - for example allergies or current medication.

5. Make sure if you are under 18, your ICE partner is a parent or guardian authorized to make decision on your behalf - for example if you need a life or death operation.

6. Should you your preferred contact be deaf, then prefix the number with ICETEXT.

7. For more than one contact name, type ICE1, ICE2, ICE3, and so on.

Putting ICE into your phone’s memory doesn’t take much time or effort. It does give you and your loved ones peace of mind. So, as we bring in the New Year, make a resolution that will help you and your family; add ICE to all your mobile phones!

Medical Emergencies

In addition to having ICE (in case of emergency) programmed into your cell phone you should also have an emergency contact sheet posted in your home. We would like to stress the importance of having an emergency contact sheet for every person in your home. In the unlikely event an injury or medical emergency, the information provided on this sheet will give sufficient information to first responders to more adequately treat you. The sheet should list the phone numbers of your doctor, who to call in an emergency, a list of your medications, a list of allergies, and any medical conditions which may affect your treatment. The contact sheet should be posted in a prominent location, such as your refrigerator or cupboard door. We have included an Emergency Contact Form in this month’s NET. If you would like this form electronically, please contact the office.

Happy New Year & Coffee Hour

Just to remind us all how this works: 6 households will be assigned each

Sunday. No one will have to do this more than a couple times each year. We

ask that you plan to bring along with you on Sunday a plate of something to put out for coffee

hour. Baking is no required, but is always welcomed! The items

you bring can be as simple as a bag of goldfish crackers, fresh fruit such as grapes, baby carrots and dip, grapes, crackers & cheese, you name it. Just bring enough to share with maybe two dozen people, and please make sure it’s ready to service(i.e., on a platter, sliced, whatever). All you have to do is leave the item in the kitchen before church. The verger will take care of putting things out and cleaning up (though you are always welcome to help!) Tom Newman will help out by getting the coffee & lemonade started. THANK YOU Tom! If you cannot cover your assigned Sunday, it would be most helpful if you call someone and switch Sundays. You many opt entirely out of the rotation simply by contacting Amanda Chambers 440-669-6352 or [email protected]

St. Cecilia’s Guild

How does prayer “happen”? What special combinations of words make a prayer a prayer? In this Prayer-Writing Workshop—the Guild’s Lunch-and-Learn for Wednesday, January 18, 2017, beginning at noon—we will explore

God’s language put into words and placed in classic and innovative forms. Participants will be encouraged to develop their own language of prayer, all with the guided help of the Rev. Rosalind Hughes. Rev. Hughes is especially interested in prayer, spirituality and poetry, and she has led prayer-writing workshops throughout the Diocese of Ohio. A regular contributor to the Episcopal Cafe, her blog, “Over the Water,” can be found at rosalindhughes.com. She moved to Ohio from the United Kingdom in 2003 with her husband and three children. A “cradle Anglican,” she found a church home at Trinity Episcopal Cathedral in downtown Cleveland— the parish that sponsored her journey to ordination. St. Peter’s was also formational in her development as an ordained minister, providing her with a supervised field education placement between 2009 and 2011, when she was a seminarian. She now serves as the Rector to the Church of the Epiphany in Euclid, Ohio. Bring your favorite notebook or pen with you; paper and pens will also be provided. The workshop is free, but if you wish to make a donation to thank Rev. Hughes for her time, you may write a check to the Church of the Epiphany, Rector’s Discretionary Fund, and bring it with you the day of the workshop. A boxed lunch from Nature’s Bin Catering (and beverages) will be available; the cost is $12. If you would like us to reserve lunch and a space for you in the workshop (we are limiting enrollment to 16), please send your check, made out to St. Peter’s Episcopal Church, with St. Cecilia’s Guild/January Event in the memo line, to: Lynn Allman, 166 Market Street, #229, Westlake, Ohio, 44145. The deadline is Wednesday, January 11, 2017.

We have a strong Center teeming with children and are hoping to continue as such through 2017. The end of the year is always so busy that it is nice when January comes to let us
