Serves 10 The Consumer Electronics Show (CES) is an annual trade show that introduces the brightest and best new electronic technology. The 2016 show, held in Las Vegas, Nevada, covered 2.4 million square feet and offered something for consumers of every age and walk of life. Here are four great highlights from January’s event. Fisher Price Code-a-Pillar If you want to give your toddler a head start on his or her computer coding skills, Fisher Price now offers a colorful little robot bug to help you. The Code-a-Pillar is an adorable robotic caterpillar made up of separate segments that your toddler can snap together to make the toy perform various tasks in a specific order. While it looks cute and inspires laughter, it is actually using color, sound and movement to teach basic coding principles, which will definitely come in handy when it’s time to tackle real- world technology. The Code-a-Pillar will be on shelves in July. Withings Go Fitness Watch Multitudes of fitness trackers are available these days, but the new Withings Go Fitness Watch offers a few features that may persuade you to make the switch. Its clean, simple design features an e-ink display that always stays on, so you can check your progress quickly. The Go also boasts an eight- month battery life and most basic health tracking features like weight loss analysis and automatic sleep detection. Unfortunately, it doesn’t have a vibration motor, so the convenient silent alarms that some trackers offer are not on its list of charms. If you’re looking for a well- made, waterproof fitness tracker and watch combo, the Go is a decent and affordable choice. The Sensorwake Alarm Clock If you hate the heart-stopping, brain-jarring sound of your traditional morning alarm, the Sensorwake olfactory alarm clock might become your new best friend. Instead of jolting you into consciousness, this clock emits a pleasant odor of your choosing to gently and quietly rouse you. Choose from a variety of scents such as mint, espresso, chocolate or seaside. Don’t worry; if a false promise of caffeine doesn’t stir you from your slumber, a back-up melody will kick in after three minutes. Sevenhugs Smart Remote The Sevenhugs Smart Remote is a new electronic device for the person who has far too many electronic devices. A brilliant 2016 update of the universal remote concept allows you to connect to and control virtually any smart device in your home by simply pointing at it. The sleek touchscreen automatically adapts its interface to the item chosen. You can customize your affordably priced Smart Remote to meet your specific needs. By now, almost everyone has heard about the amazing health and beauty benefits of coconut oil. However, not everyone is singing its praises. Some people find that coconut oil clogs their pores and causes tiny keratin cysts called milia to form. Coconut oil is notoriously heavy and may seem to sit on top of the skin instead of soaking into it. If coconuts have let you down, don’t despair; there’s a new superstar oil on the rise, and it shares many of coconut oil’s charms but offers superior performance. Babassu oil comes from the seeds of the babassu palm plant. It’s solid at room temperature and melts easily on the skin. The oil contains the same nutrients and fatty acids as coconut oil, but its differences are turning heads. Here are six great reasons that you should reserve a spot on your shelf for this new and exciting product. Six Awesome Benefits of Babassu Oil It’s lightweight, it’s less messy and it won’t clog your pores. You won’t need to wash babassu oil away after applying it; it will sink into your skin rapidly without creating an oil slick. It fights skin inflammation. Apply it to insect bites, burns, chapped skin, eczema, psoriasis, rosacea and allergic dermatitis to relieve pain, reduce inflammation and produce a cooling sensation. Babassu oil is a great deep conditioner for your hair. Adding a few drops to your shampoo or conditioner will make a noticeable difference in the texture and quality of your tresses. Expect less breakage and a smoother look and feel. It’s great for your nails and cuticles. High concentrations of vitamin E and lauric acid allow it to promote moisture retention and help kill bacteria and fungus to keep your hands and feet soft and healthy. It locks in moisture to treat dry skin. Apply it directly to your skin, or melt a small amount into your bathwater for all-over softness. It’s a great alternative to cooking oil; it provides the same health benefits as coconut oil but without the strong, nutty aroma. Tips for Buying Babassu Oil You can purchase babassu oil in bulk or in smaller packages for personal use. When choosing a brand, keep in mind that certain characteristics are important markers of quality. Look for 100 percent pure organic oil that is obtained through cold pressing extraction. If you plan to consume the oil, be certain that it is packaged in food-grade, BPA-free materials. If you paid attention in American history class, you probably remember that the U.S. Constitution was drafted in Philadelphia in 1787. You may even recall that it has seven articles and 27 amendments. If you’re a devoted history or politics buff, you may even be able to explain the Bill of Rights or the key principles of separation of powers, checks and balances and federalism. These basics are obviously important, but there are a few interesting things your dry history books probably missed. It’s All About the Words Before the Constitution’s ratification, a senate committee proposed the term “His Highness the President of the United States of America and Protector of Their Liberties” to be our leader’s title. Fortunately, “Mr. President” was adopted instead. The shorter title obviously saved paper; it may have been America’s first Eco-friendly decision. The Constitution was written with a quill pen, and this process proved to be a challenge. On page one, there are visible ink splotches in various sizes. The number of words in the Constitution adds up to a mere 4,440. The low word count makes it the shortest constitution on the planet. English was not the only language used in the Constitution; parts were written in Latin. Pennsylvania was misspelled in the Constitution as “Pensylvania.” The word “freedom” appears only once in the entire Constitution, but “liberty” is used three times, and “power” or “powers” makes an appearance 36 times. The word “democracy” doesn’t appear at all. Who, When and How Long? A Pennsylvania General Assembly clerk named Jacob Shallus penned the Constitution for $30. Today, he would have earned more than $700. The only presidents who signed the document were George Washington and James Madison. Benjamin Franklin required assistance to sign the Constitution due to his poor health. As he signed, tears ran down his face. The National Archives Building in Washington, D.C. is home to the Constitution. It is protected behind special glass equipped with a titanium frame. To preserve the integrity of the parchment, the temperature of its display cases are kept at 67 degrees Fahrenheit. Relative humidity is maintained at 40 percent. Argon gas inside the cases further preserves the documents’ quality. Patrick Henry, known for his support of individual rights, was elected as a delegate to the Constitutional Convention. He declined, stating his reason was that he “smelt a rat.” In March of 1788, Rhode Island held a popular election to determine the Constitution’s ratification status. Only 237 votes were in favor; 2,945 voters opposed. Reflections Through the Years We may never know how many seemingly small or little-known events colored our Constitution’s rich past, but its enduring promises of freedom contribute to every moment of our lives in the present. Ever stop to think, and forget to start again? Duct tape is like the force, it has a light side and a dark side and it holds the universe together. A “jiffy” is an actual unit of time for 1/100th of a second. In England, the Speaker of the House is not allowed to speak. A closed mouth gathers no foot. Chocolate: the OTHER major food group. IRS: We’ve got what it takes to take what you’ve got. Always remember you’re unique, just like everyone else. How many of you believe in telekinesis? Raise my hand. I didn’t say it was your fault.
