Empire 8 On the Line: The winner of today’s contest will be crowned the Empire 8 champion and earn an automatic berth to the NCAA Championship. Since the inception of Empire 8 football in 2002, Fisher has never won the Empire 8 title outright. In 2004, Ithaca and Fisher shared the Empire 8 regular season title with the Cardinals earning the automatic bid due to a 45-38 double overtime head-to-head victory. Fisher shared the regular season crown with Springfield College in 2006 and needed an at-large bid into the NCAA Championship. The Cardinals again received an at-large bid into the NCAA Championship in 2009 when it shared the Empire 8 regular season title with Alfred. The Saxons earned the automatic berth after defeating Fisher 38-21 in the regular season.

Streak Halted: Senior quarterback Tyler Fenti threw his first interception of the season Saturday, going 126-for-187 before throwing an INT in the third quarter. He had thrown 21 touchdowns this season before being intercepted for the first time this year. Dating back to last season in Fisher’s NCAA quarterfinal loss to the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor, Fenti went 214 attempts without throwing an interception.

Series History: This rivalry began in the late 1990s, with the two teams meeting in every season starting in 1998. At the beginning the Bombers owned the series, winning the first six contests before Fisher broke the streak in 2004 with a 45-38 double overtime victory at Growney Stadium. Ithaca got back on the winning side in 2005, but since that loss, the Cardinals won the next seven games, outscoring Ithaca 216-86 in that span. Ithaca earned its first win in eight tries last year 25-22 over the visiting Cardinals.

Collichio Honored: Wideout Mike Collichio has been on a tear lately recording a receiving touchdown in each of the past six games, including two against Buffalo State along with a career-high 174 receiving yards, earning him a spot on the d3football.com Team of the Week as well as being named the Empire 8 Offensive Player of the Week. The Webster Schroeder graduate now leads the Empire 8 with nine touchdown receptions and ranks 20th nationally. For the year Collichio has 34 receptions for 536 yards.

Mr. Efficiency: Tyler Fenti ranks sixth in the country in passing efficiency (184.3) completing 129-of-194 passes for 1,881 yards, 22 touchdowns and just one interception. Fenti has thrown a touchdown pass in each game that he has played in since taking over the starting role to begin the 2013 season, which spans 20 games.

Touchdown Streaks: Two Cardinals currently have touchdown streaks in the works. Mike Collichio leads the way having scored a touchdown reception in each of the past six games. Running back Tony Fusco has found pay dirt in the past four games.

Defensive Battle: Fisher and Ithaca come into today’s contest as the number one and number two ranked scoring defenses in the Empire 8, respectively. The Cardinals lead the Empire 8 surrendering just 15.4 points per game and 275.6 yards of total offense, while the Bombers give up 17 points per game and 294.1 yards of total offense.

Fueled By Fusco: Tony Fusco was the workhouse last weekend for Fisher, rushing for 158 yards on a career-high 29 attempts. It was the third time this season that Fusco has gone over 100 yards rushing in a game. His 98.5 rushing yards average per game ranks third in the Empire 8 and his production is a large reason Fisher’s rushing offense ranks 25th in the nation at 240.5 yards per game.

Bearing Down On Defense: When it comes down to red zone defense, Fisher is one of the best in the country at shutting down opponents. The Cardinals rank 7th in the country in red zone defense with a .545 percentage (12-for-22) allowing 9 rush and 2 passing touchdowns, and one field goal. The Cardinals rank 13th nationally in third down conversion percentage defense holding opponents to 31-114 (27 %).

Racking up the yards: Fisher has gone over 500 yards of total offense in each of the past three contests. The Cardinals racked up 533 yards of total offense against Utica College, followed up by 506 Alfred State before racking up a season-high 583 yards against Buffalo State. Fisher has outgained opponents 1622 to 595 in the past three games.

National Rankings: Fisher remained No. 15 in this week’s d3football.com poll and moved up one spot in the national coaches poll to No. 15.

All Purpose Chambers: Running Back/Kick Returner James Chambers ranks 39th nationally in all purpose yards per game notching 146.0. Chambers has totaled 1,168 yards in 8 games on 506 rush yards (63 yards per game), 134 reception yards (17 per game) and 528 return yards (66 per game). Last week Chambers finished with 106 kick return yards and a season-best 43 yard return.

Down To The Yard: After each playing eight games this season quarterbacks Tyler Fenti and Ithaca signal caller Tom Dempsey have thrown for an identical 1,881 yards (235.1 average). Fenti leads the Empire 8 with 22 touchdown passes while Dempsey is a close second with 20.

Putting Up the Points: Fisher continues to be the top scoring offense in the Empire 8 at 41.8 points per game, which ranks 18th in the country.

The Ultimate Weekend: Fisher defensive coordinator Mike Fox (‘05) was inducted into the Fisher Athletics Hall of Fame on Saturday. Fox is the all-time leader in Fisher history with 478 tackles, which ranks 10th all-time in Division III history. To go along with being inducted, Fox also got engaged to his girlfriend on Saturday.

Up Next: Fisher will travel to Alfred University for its final regular season contest at 1 p.m.

LAST YEAR - No. 25 Fisher 22, Ithaca 25October 26, 2013 The nationally-ranked St. John Fisher College football team fell for the second straight week, losing 25-22 to the Ithaca College Bombers Saturday at Butterfield Stadium. It was the Bombers first win over the Cardinals since 2005. Fisher falls to 5-2 overall and 2-2 in the Empire 8, while Ithaca moves to 6-1 and 4-1 respectively. Fisher had tough time protecting the ball all day committing five turnovers, including four in the second half. However, a strong defensive effort helped keep Fisher in the game late. Trailing 25-14 with less than five minutes to play, Fisher went 79 yards as Tyler Fenti used his legs to finish off the drive with a 13-yard score. Fenti found Nathan Nigolian on the two-point conversion to cut the lead to 25-22 with just under three minutes to play in the game. The Cardinals successfully recovered the ensuing onside kick but Fenti’s second inter-ception of the game allowed the Bombers to run out the clock. Following a defensive battle in the first half, which resulted in the Cardinals taking a 7-6 lead into the break, Ithaca spent no time making an impact in the next half. Sam Car-ney took the opening kickoff 88 yards to the Fisher nine yard line. Tom Dempsey found Ben Cary for the one-yard touchdown three plays later to take the 12-7 lead after a failed two-point conversion. Fisher then drove into Ithaca territory but failed on a fourth and ten and the Bombers made them pay, finding the endzone just two plays later. Ithaca followed up a 65-yard passing play with a 14-yard touchdown from Evan Skea to take a 19-7 lead. The Cardinals responded on their next possession when Fenti found Ryan Kramer for the 19-yard touchdown on an eight play, 64 yard drive midway through the third quarter. On next Fisher possession Fenti was intercepted by Mike Vulcano, who returned it 29 yards to the Fisher eight yard line. However Mike Guinta was able to come up with his second interception in two weeks, this time in the endzone to keep the Bombers off the board. Fisher was unable to capitalize on the turnover though as six plays later Ithaca recov-ered a Fenti fumble at the Fisher 37, resulting in a 24-yard field goal at the beginning of the fourth quarter to take a 22-14 lead. The woes continued for Fisher on the offensive end with Nigolian hauling in a 24-yard pass for a first down but losing a fumble that was recovered by the Bombers the Fisher 40 yard line. Ithaca used an important 11 play 37 yard drive, including converting a fourth down and three from the Fisher 31, leading to a Bomber field goal to make the score 25-14 halfway through the fourth quarter. The first half had a much different feel from the second, with both defenses looking strong. After holding Ithaca on fourth and two from the Fisher 45 on the Bombers first of-fensive possession, Fisher marched down the field only to have Cody Miller lose a fumble that was recovered by Ithaca in the endzone. On the Cardinals next possession the Bombers stopped Fisher on a fourth and five from the Ithaca 34 which set up the first points of the game. Ithaca marched 52 yards on 13 plays, capped off by a 35-yard field goal five minutes into the second quarter. Fisher was finally able to break through late in the second quarter. The Cardinals, behind their fast paced no-huddle offense, went 80 yards in 1:41 with Miller finding the endzone from five yards out with under one minute to play in the second quarter. Fenti was 4-5 on the drive throwing for 48 yards. On the ensuing kickoff Josh Oliver had a 53 yards return to the Fisher 45 yard line. The Bombers went 35 yards in six plays to the Cardinals three, converting a field goal with time expiring to cut the deficit to 7-6 at the half. Fenti finished the day 29 of 48 for 326 yards and two interceptions. Ryan Kramer had 11 catches for 108 yards while Miller ran for 71 yards on the day. Sean Preish paced the Cardinals defense with 12 tackles, along with one sack.

GAME ONE - No. 9 Fisher 36, Otterbein 14September 6, 2014 Nationally-ranked St. John Fisher College scored the game’s final 22 points to earn a 36-14 win over visiting Otterbein University in the Division III foot-ball season opener for both teams. For Fisher, ranked No. 9 in the D3football.com preseason poll, senior quar-terback Tyler Fenti completed 22-of-33 passes for 296 yards, four touchdowns and no interceptions. Senior wideout Nathan Nigolian scored two touch-downs on the day and finished with eight catches for 148 yards. For Otterbein, Reid Hutchinson rushed for 148 yards on just nine carries. After forcing Otterbein to go three-and-out in the game’s opening drive, Fisher marched 54 yards on just three plays with Robert Campese scoring his first career touchdown on a 21-yard pass from Fenti less than two minutes into the contest. Otterbein, however, responded with a 14-play, 73-yard drive, capped by a two-yard run from Drew Ervin to tie the game at 7s. The visiting Cardinals nearly took the lead early in the second quarter, as Brandon Fuentes made a diving tackle at the Fisher 4-yard line, following a 58-yard run from Hutchinson. Three plays later, senior All-American Sean Preish forced quarterback Brick Davis to fumble at the Fisher 20, ending the scoring threat. With just over five minutes left in the second quarter, Fisher scored its second touchdown of the day, as Mike Collichio made a diving catch in the end-zone on fourth-and-10 from the Otterbein 31. It would stay 14-7 going into the second half and Otterbein would tie it up on its very first offensive play of third quarter with Hutchinson scoring on an 82-yard end-around with 12:27 left in half. Fisher’s defense would give the Cardinals the lead for good, as Mike Donitzen tackled Hutchinson on a pitch-play in the endzone for the safety with 9:28 left in the quarter. Following the ensuing free kick, Nigolian scored on a 45-yard bomb to put Fisher up 22-14 with 9:14 remaining. On Fisher’s next offensive possession, sophomore Chris Smith broke through the middle to score his first collegiate touchdown, a 17-yard run with 4:05 left in the quarter. Fisher struck again in the closing moments of the third. Nigolian scored his second touchdown of the quarter, breaking a tackle and scampering down the right sidelines for a 46-yard catch. GAME TWO - No. 8 Fisher 36, Brockport 20September 20, 2014 The nationally-ranked St. John Fisher College team erupted for 404 yards on the ground, including a game-high 187 yards from Tony Fusco, to defeat The College at Brock-port 36-20 in Courage Bowl X in front of an announced crowd of 9,220. With the win, No. 8 Fisher is now a perfect 10-for-10 in Courage Bowl contests with this being the first-ever Empire 8 Conference matchup between the two squads. Fisher improves to 2-0 on the year with the win and 1-0 in Empire 8 play while the Golden Eagles fall to 2-1. 0-1, respectively. Fusco gained 187 yards on just 21 carries and scored one touchdown in each half. Freshman running back James Chambers was equally explosive and also scored two touchdowns. Chambers rushed for 126 yards on 12 carries and caught one pass for a 59-yard touchdown receptions. He also had 81 yards on kick returns. The defense did its job to get off the field on the first series of the game, allowing for the Fisher offense the opportunity to score first. Fisher did just that going 73 yards in just three plays, all on the ground, with Chambers scoring from 24 yards out. Fusco car-ried the first two times on the drive racking up a total of 49 yards. Brockport suffered a large blow on its third series as starting quarterback Wayne Bonsell suffered an injury, sidelining him for the rest of the game.Fisher made good on its ensuing possession with Chambers finding paydirt once again, this time through the air on a 59-yard touchdown. The freshman running back snuck out of the backfield on a wheel route going untouched down the sideline to the endzone to put Fisher up 13-0 after the mixed extra point with :31 seconds remaining in the first quarter. The score remained 13-0 until Fisher sustained it longest drive of the half: an-11 play, 69-yard drive capped off by a 24 yard field goal from Greg Lohrman less than two minutes to play in the second quarter. Still in search of its first point of the game, Brockport took to the air only to have senior linebacker Mike Donitzen pick off Brockport quarterback Chase Venuto in Golden Eagle territory. Just three plays later, Fusco scored from a yard out. Fisher racked up 203 yards rushing in the first half, taking a 23-0 lead into the break. In desperate need of a momentum change, the Golden Eagles got just that blocking a Lohrman punt. The first-time Courage Bowl participants cashed in two plays later on a two yard rush to cut into the visitors lead 23-7. The Cardinals were quick to slash the Brockport momentum on their next drive going back to the ground game, which was successful all night. On just the second play from scrimmage, Fusco took a handoff to the right side breaking several tackles and outrun-ning the rest on a 50 yard scamper. Fisher led 30-7 early in the third quarter. Senior quarterback Tyler Fenti scored on a one-yard run with 10:12 left to make it 36-14 for Fisher’s final points. Defensively, Fisher forced three interceptions. Alec Mortillaro intercepted a pass in the first quarter, while, Paul Leavell intercepted a pass in the endzone in the fourth quarter. It was the final meeting between the squads in Empire 8 play as Frostburg State will play in the New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) in 2015. With the win, No. 7 Fisher improves to 3-0 overall and 2-0 in Empire 8 play, while Frostburg falls to 2-2, 0-2 respectively. Chris Smith was extremely efficient on the day, scoring three rushing touchdowns on just nine carries. Quarterback, Tyler Fenti was equally impressive going 15-for-23, throwing for 204 yards and three scores. The senior quarterback connected with Nathan Nigolian for a touchdown in each half as he ended the day with six catches for 78 yards. On the defensive side of the ball Fisher surrendered 194 yards on the day, including just 36 rushing yards. Fisher found the end zone first after the defense forced a three-and-out on the open-ing drive. Nigolian put the Cardinals in great field position after taking the punt return 38 yards to the Frostburg 16 yard line. The key play of the drive came on third and eight when Fenti connected with Nigolian for a 13-yard reception down to the one yard line. On the very next play, Smith scored his second touchdown of the season. The Fisher defense came up big again on the very next drive halting Frostburg on a fourth and one on the Cardinals 46. Tony Fusco picked up where he left off last weekend starting off the possession with a 29-yard run to put Fisher into scoring territory. Just four plays later Fenti connected with Nigolian for a 20-yard score on a lofted pass into the end zone, for a 14-0 advantage midway through the first quarter. On just its third possession of the game, Fisher strung together a nine play, 57-yard drive, capped off by a 14-yard score on fourth and one from Smith with 2:16 remaining in the opening quarter. James Chambers accounted for 34 yards on the drive including 23 on the ground. Following an empty offensive possession for the visitors, the Cardinals special teams sniffed out a fake punt a fourth and one, putting Fisher’s drive start at the Bobcats 26. That led to Smith finding pay dirt for the third time on the day on a 11-yard rush up the middle to push Fisher’s lead to 28-0 early in the second quarter. The score would remain that way until late in the half when Frostburg capitalized on a Bobby Campese fumble near midfield. Quarterback Isaac Robison found Mike Ambrose for a five-yard touchdown with just six seconds remaining. Fisher led 28-7 at the half. Fisher waisted no time getting things going in the second half taking the opening drive 51 yards, on eight plays. The drive was set up by a solid return from Chambers who went for 33 yards out to the Cardinals 49. It was a similar sight to end the drive, Fenti to Nigolian, for a eight yard touchdown to make it 35-7 in favor of the visitors. The Cardinals lead increased to 42-7 in the closing seconds of the third quarter as Fenti threw his third touchdown pass of the day, a 24-yard pass to Mike Collichio in the corner of the end zone. Fisher benefitted from a 48-yard hookup on the drive from Fenti to Taylor Byrne. In the fourth quarter Fisher brought in Matt Naton under center who hit Byrne on his first pass of the game for a 38-yard score. It was Byrne’s first career touchdown. Follow-ing a missed extra point the Cardinals held a 48-7 lead which would prove to be the final score of the game. Fusco rushed for 74 yards on eight carries while Chambers finished with 52 yards on the ground. For the defense, Paul Leavell led the way with seven tackles along with one intercep-tion. GAME SEVEN- No. 15 Fisher 61, Alfred State 0October 25, 2014 The nationally-ranked St. John Fisher College football team saw eight different play-ers find the end zone as the visiting Cardinals blanked Alfred State 61-0 on Saturday at Pioneer Stadium. It was the first time Fisher held an opponent scoreless since it blanked Otterbein University 28-0 to open up the 2013 season. With the win No. 15 Fisher improves to 6-1 overall, while Alfred State falls to 2-5. The Fisher defense was up to the challenge of stopping Rasheed Williams, Alfred State’s back who was averaging 206 yards per game and topped 100 yards in each of the previous six games. Williams was held to just two yards on sixteen carries in the game as the Pioneers finished with a -4 net on the ground and just 61 yards of total offense, both school records. Fisher made good on an early Alfred State turnover as defensive back Anthony Lee jarred the ball loose and Mike Donitzen scooped up the fumble, scampering 28 yards to the Alfred State 12 yard line. Three plays later, Tyler Fenti found a familiar target, Nathan Nigolian, for a 5-yard score. On its next possession Fisher converted a long 3rd and 13 as Fenti connected with Rob Riggio behind the defense for a 58-yard touchdown seven minutes into the game. It was Riggio’s first touchdown of the season. Fenti continued his efficient day on the next drive hooking up with James Chambers on a 27-yard wheel route, his third receiving touchdown of the year to put Fisher up 21-0.The Cardinals benefited from a drive start at the Alfred 48 late in half as Tony Fusco ac-counted for all 48 yards on the drive, capped off by a 1-yard score with 1:40 remaining in the half. Fisher led 28-0 at the break. After receiving the opening kickoff of the second half , Fisher marched 62 yards on 7 plays with Fenti throwing his fourth touchdown of the day, this time to Mike Collichio for a 20-yard score. The sophomore wideout now has scored a touchdown in each of the last five games. Fisher led 34-0 after the missed extra point. The visiting Cardinals added another touchdown late in the third quarter with Cham-bers notching a 56-yard scamper on the ground to push Fisher’s lead to 41-0 late in the third quarter. On its next possession running back Jimmy Ross found the end zone for the first time in his career. The senior rushed for a 4-yard score to make it 47-0 in favor of the Cardi-nals. Fisher rattled off its second run over 50 yards midway through the fourth quarter with Steven Strumolo running for a 58-yard score. The Cardinals final score of the game came on the very next possession with DJ Logory caused a fumble at the Alfred 6, allowing Sammy Hasan to recover the free ball in the end zone for his first career touchdown. Fenti, who exited the game in the third quarter, finished 10-for-14 for 192 yards and 4 touchdowns to push his season total to 20. Chambers was the leading rusher for Fisher with 10 carries for 89 yards, while Fusco finished with 73 yards. Collichio was the top wideout with three receptions for 53 yards. On the defensive side Lee had a career-high seven tackles joined by Paul Leavell and Bryant Moore. Ryan Ballard forced two fumbles on the day.
