Diving with Rog…... After some questionable weather on the East Coast the visibility has cleared & the water is starting to warm up, the Cray's are starting to harden. You will still need to check for soft shells and for eggs though. There has been some good catches recently & scallops have been there for the taking. Servicing & testing gear should now be a priority as the Summer rush has begun.

Fish City Releases A New Innovative Boat Design - The Maxicraft 430! The Short Long Story! By Ross Christensen
With rising fuel prices & the cost of putting a meal on the table, Kiwi's are getting back to their basic boating & fishing. With this in mind I started doing some research into what boats were available, how much it cost and how these craft performed. After several months of research I found that there was a real lack of the thought process involved in the smaller sized craft in NZ. I believe that due to existing manufactures knowing they could make a greater profit by making & selling bigger trailer boats & the smaller manufactures not quite having the right mix of practicality, performance to cost ratio, most new 14.6ft new boat packages now retail for over $ 25,000.00! . Combining a passion for performance, an engineering background & 20 years of fishing, diving, & boat racing experience I believed I could design a better craft for less money that ticked all the boxes for most Ki-wi’s . I started with a blank sheet of paper & worked out all the things we needed to make the best practical small boat for New Zealanders, I wanted to set a new Benchmark; Ride, stability, dryness, usable space, storage, strength & it needed to look good enough so you didn't need to wear a mask when using it! I teamed up with a reputable boat designer & combined my plans & principals with his knowledge & experience. We then designed & built the prototype boat. We immediately fitted it out & tested in various conditions & it proved to exceed our expectations. With minor changes from original plans the first batch of boats have been built & are creating a lot of interest at both Fish City branches.
The Trailer Next I needed the whole package to work so I analyzed the good & bad things about current small trailers. Most of them are too high for easy launching off a beach & work on the principal that its only a light boat & the owners want a cheap trailer! I disagree & believe the trailer is very important as you often spend as much time towing as you do getting to your spots in the boat, so in conjunction with well known manufacture Voyager trailers we have designed a special low riding, easy launching, durable trailer that tows better than anything in its size range I've ever tested.
The Motor This part was easy, it needed to have the most horse power for the least money and do the job reliably while giving the performance needed. Enter the Mercury 30ML (Manual Long shaft) this motor is undoubtedly the most proven small 2 stroke in NZ being used & abused on the Surf Rescue inflatable's. These motors are regularly sunk, drained & reused so I knew this was a great starting point. There are many other great motors with lots of features including electric start, trim & tilt, four stroke & this boat package will work with numerous upgrades but the 30ML gets you out there for the least money & won't let you down. It pushes our Maxicraft at 50kph with two on board getting on the plane easily, so as I found its all you need as a starting point.
In Brief Summary The Maxicraft 430 Boat, Motor & Trailer package is a 4.3 meter alloy boat that has been designed from the ground up to give you the most boating for your dollar. We invite you to come & check them out at either of our Fish City Branches, the team will be happy to show you the features & benefits as well as answer any questions you might have.
Here is some standard specifications & features on the Maxicraft 430T (tiller steer) & the Maxicraft 430C (centre console);
• 4.3m Length • 2m Wide • Hull Weight 230k • Passive Live Bait Tank • Two Swivel Seats • Self Draining Anchor Locker • 6 Welded In Heavy Duty Rod Holders • Super Wide Beam for Extra Stability with Gull Wing Hull Design for a Softer Ride

FRESHWATER REPORT WINTER 2011
As summer rolls around again and the weather heats up, so too does the freshwater fishing action to be had in the Waikato and beyond. With a new season comes new gear, none more exciting than the new A4 Fly Rod from the Scott Fly Rod Company. This rod combines high performance and quality with affordability and there is a model to suit every situation.
Handcrafted from start to finish in Montrose, Colorado, the Scott A4 remains one of the only fully American made production fly rod in this price range.
Components and construction were carefully chosen to deliver top performance with the anglers needs in mind. New grip shapes are turned from Super grade cork to provide greater feel, with high end componentry that is found on Scott’s more expensive models.
A4 rods cover a wide variety of fishing situations from small creeks to inshore and salt-water flats and coupled with Scott’s Lifetime Warranty, this is one awesome bit of kit that you simply need to check out.
Scott A4 8’, 5 weight
This rod oozes class and is a light, delicate tool for presenting small dries and nymphs on small streams. However, the design of the A4 allows the angler to put some serious hurt on a feisty small stream rainbow or a big stubborn brown. The lighter line rating allows for precise presentation while the shorter rod length allows for great control when casting in tricky areas, such as flicking a small dry under an overhanging willow. This rod will be ideal for streams like the Mangatutu and the Pirongia mountain streams, which will see more and more fish heading up into the clear, cool water as the summer progresses. Also, it would be worth taking this rod to the upper Waihou, which have had some seriously big fish cruising it’s crystal clear waters.
Come and see us at Fish City and check out our extended range of fly Rods, see Bev-an, Paul or Cameron at the Hamilton store or Brendan at the Auckland store and we will be happy to sort you out with the right gear to suit your needs.

Salty Report
As I write this we’re enjoying the warmer
temperatures that come with spring, so how has
the fishing been? In a word
Outstanding! the snapper came in right on queue
both on the West Coast and the Hauraki Gulf but
have tended to stay outside of the inner gulf in that
30 to 45 meter mark. There are lots of workups
out here with whales, dolphins and hundreds of
gannets pouring in, interes, ngly there have been a
lot more whales in the Gulf this year and seem to
have taken up permanent residence which makes
for a great spectacle for those
boa,ng out there.
In that deeper water heavy bodied lures like
Lucanus work be.er as they get down quicker.
Pirate jigs, prowler jigs, bo.om ship, bay rubber or
standard snapper jigs all are working very well and
of course you can s,ll use Snapper flasher dropper
rigs with bait. Where bait is really working well is
in the inner gulf where the Snapper aren’t so thick,
even if nothing is showing on the sounder a good
berley trail will pull them in and you will be taking
home a good feed.
There are plenty of monster Kahawai out there and
as summer approaches they will be joined by an
influx of Kingfish and hopefully Skipjack Tuna again
giving us a good range of line pullers to have a
crack at .
Remember come February we will be into the
Game Fish with the Striped & Blue Marlin and Tuna
coming in. Hopefully there will be a repeat of the
last game season with Marlin coming in close and
being seen jumping in approx 40m around the Bay
Of Plenty. Blue Nose, Hapuka and Gem Fish will be
sure to make an appearance so if there is anything
we can help you with to get ready for them, let us
know!!
Well have a great Xmas & New Year, enjoy your
fishing holidays! Good luck & please send us in
some photo's we'd love to see them.....

Hunting with Gordy………. This issue I will be going over Gun Maintenance. Looking after your firearm is one of the most important things you can do.
Step 1 – Take out your Gun Care kit & place Firearm in rifle rest with a towel under Rest to help collect any waste residue. Step 2 – Assemble cleaning rods, muzzle guard and bore brush, saturate brush with gun Cleaner. Step 3 - Push through barrel to remove residue or fouling ( Always push brush through Bore in a single direction). Step 4 – Apply gun cleaner to patch. Push through barrel allowing chemical to remove Residue, continue this as needed. Step 5 – Use dry patches to remove any more fouling and debris, continue this until patches are clean & dry. Step 6 – Wipe down all exterior parts and remove any excess cleaner.
NOTE – This process should be done after every trip or hunt even if you don’t pull the trigger, I also do this if I haven’t used my firearms for a while. I use & recommend Gun Slick, Remington & Hoppe’s cleaning products which are available at both the Albany & Hamilton Stores.
Next issue I will focus on The Roar & The Duck Shooting season. TIKKA T3 LITE STAINLESS/SYNTHETIC BEST BUY is the TIKKA T3 LITE rifle in 308, 7mm 08, .270 at $ 1,299.99 with a FREE packet of matching AMMO!!!. Get ready for the roar. Happy Shooting, Gordy.
