FISCAL YEAR 2019/20(2076/77)
PREFACE
Department of Customs, as the primary source of Nepal’s foreign
trade (of goods) data, regularly publishes the annual statistics of
Nepal’s foreign trade after the end of a fiscal year. Nepal Foreign
Trade Statistics – 2076/77 (2019/20 AD) is another series of this
publication which covers Nepal’s annual foreign trade in goods over
the fiscal year 2076/77. The statistical information presented in
this book are based on the data generated from the Automated System
for Customs Data (ASYCUDA) World software which has been executed
in twenty-four customs offices of Nepal.
This book attempts to present a brief summary of Nepal’s foreign
trade performance in FY 2076/77 and provide a disaggregated level
of foreign trade information by various important components such
as trade statistics by chapters of Harmonized system, by commodity,
by trading partner country, by imports duty and by customs office.
I hope that all the concerned users will find this book useful. Any
valuable suggestions about this book will be always
appreciated.
In the past, the book was generally prepared solely by the staffs
of the Department of Customs. However, this time, this book has
been prepared by the collective effort of the staffs of the
Department of Customs along with the representative staff of the
Nepal Rastra Bank, the Trade and Export Promotion Centre (TEPC).
and the Ministry of Industry, Commerce and Supply. These government
agencies are the main user of the foreign trade data compiled by
the Department of Customs. The purpose behind incorporating the
staff of these agencies is to engender a sense of ownership over
this publication among the stakeholders of Nepal’s foreign trade
statistics.
I appreciate Deputy Director Generals Mr. Shyam Prasad Bhandari and
Mr. Bhumi Ram Sharma for the overall guidance during the
publication. In addition, I would like to thank all the members of
the working group coordinated by Mr. Anil Thapa, Director of the
Statistics Management Section, Department of Customs who were
assigned to develop and design the book.

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
Nepal’s total foreign trade (in goods) was in a growing trend since
the last four years. However, there was a declining trend in FY
2076/77. Nepal’s total merchandise trade decreased by 14.59 percent
to NPR 1294.50 billion in FY 2076/77 from NPR 1515.64 billion in
fiscal year 2075/76. Total export receipts slightly increased by
0.62 percent from NPR 97.11 billion in fiscal year 2075/76 to NPR
97.71 billion in fiscal year 2076/77. Improvement in export value
was mainly attributed to newly introduced export commodities in
Nepal’s export basket, i.e. refined palm oil and soybean oil. In
this year, Nepal’s import has decreased by 15.63 percent to NPR
1196.80 billion from NPR 1418.53 billion in fiscal year 2075/76.
Even though a declining trend in import trade was already witnessed
in the first eight months of fiscal year 2076/77, the overall
decrease in import was also driven by the effect of COVID-19
pandemic which began in Nepal since the end of March 2020. In this
year, Nepal’s trade deficit has dropped by 16.83 percent to NPR
1099.09 billion. The value had reached to NPR 1321.43 billion in
fiscal year 2075/76. However, an unfavorable balance of trade in
goods persisted in this fiscal year too.
