Twenty-second Sunday in Ordinary Time

Jeremiah 20: 7 – 9 Jeremiah often anguished over the difficulty in being a prophet. Proclaiming God’s message made him very unpopular. Today we hear why he still felt compelled to keep on going. Romans 12: 1-2 Toward the end of Paul’s letter to the Romans, he deals with the moral demands made on those who follow Christ. In today’s reading, Paul reminds us that living a Christian life—which so often includes sacri-fice—is like an act of liturgical worship in which we offer ourselves to God. Matthew 16: 21 - 27 In this reading Jesus both blesses Peter and insults him in anger. Then Jesus follows his outbursts at Pe-ter with stern words to all his disciples: “If any want to become my followers, let them deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me.” Reflect: Is sacrifice in your spirituality? What do you deny yourself?

ALL THINGS CONSIDERED

BLESSED SOLANUS CASEY The special Liturgy of Beatification for Blessed Solanus will take place at Ford Field in Detroit about a mile from where he ministered in the afternoon of Saturday, Nov 18. We submitted all the names we had by August 15, but learned we needed to submit not just the names of those requesting tickets but a name for every ticket requested!

I am not sure what will happen. We may get fewer tickets than requested. So we will have to wait until we hear something from the Solanus Guild that is overseeing the distribution of tickets.

SOCIAL SINS There are many ways to define sin, but the simplest and most understandable definition I have known is sin is a conscious failure to love. Love, in this sense, is not an emotion but a profound sense of respect for another and myself.

Most people tend to view sin as something personal—sins that I commit by my actions or by my inaction; sins for which I am fully responsible. Besides personal sin, there is also social sin – sins committed by our communities, the organizations to which we belong and even our country. While we are not personally responsible for these sins, if we are silent in the face of these sins, then we are complicit. To not express disapproval or disagreement when another makes a prejudicial statement or use uses humor to denigrate another. Then we are complicit

What kind of sins fall into this category? They come from an attitude that condemns, excludes or denigrate people. It is an attitude that prejudges a person and rejects them simply because they belong to a certain group or class of human beings. Our group has deemed that person or that group as unworthy of our respect or inclusion.

Among the social sins that afflict our communities, organizations and our society are any prejudice against other because of their race, ethnic or religious group. Social sins include any discrimination because of a person’s gender, sexual orientation, age, weight or abilities.

Often it is easiest to see these sins and failings in others, in other communities or in other organizations or even other countries. Sadly, we often fail to see how they exist within ourselves, our community, our country and even in our Church.

Jesus said that it is easier to see the splinter in another’s eye than to see the log in our own.

The larger the group to which we belong the harder it is to correct or change the sinful behavior but the Gospel calls us to both acknowledge our social sins and to do whatever we can to correct them. At the very least, we need to make sure I\we are not complicit by

our silence. Fr. Dave Howell

Religious Formation Registration Shout Out to “Parents of First Graders”. If you have a child, grandchild, or know someone entering first grade, it is necessary they are registered in Religious Formation too. It is so important that each child does two years of formation prior to receiving the sacrament of First Eucharist. Parents of first graders please register you child right away if you have not already. Grandparents, Godparents, relatives and friends of first grade children, please ask parents if they have registered their child yet… Our office is now open Monday through Thursday 9 am –8:30 pm for registration. Many classes are filling up and you will be forced to take a second choice for your class day and time. Our classes will begin the week of September 10. A Reflection on Confirmation As our tenth graders grow closer to the date of their Confirmation Liturgy, December 2 at 4:30, there are many things that are transpiring for them. Overnight retreat, Interviews with Father Dave, and many opportunities to reflect on the Gifts of the Holy Spirt and building their relationships with Jesus Christ. We will celebrate the Rite of Enrollment on September 16 during the Liturgy. After this Mass we will hand out doves with the candi-dates names on them with the re-quest that you pray for this person as they enter the final stages of preparation for the sacrament of confirmation. The sec-ond reading for this weekend is a perfect on to reflect upon. This passage is a final reflection given by Paul, celebrating the wisdom of God’s plan of salvation. Paul expresses the fact that God’s salvation will include every human. It is so difficult for a young person to understand the “depth of the riches and wisdom and knowledge of God.” We catechist, parents and faithful, plant the seeds and pray they grow within every individual preparing for the final sacrament of Christian Initiation into the Catholic Faith. Please add the following thirty eight candidates to your prayers as they are on this final journey to their sacrament of confirmation. We continue to remind them that formation is not over, we are in constant formation until our last day here on earth. It is up to us to be open to formation, prayer and living as disciples of Christ.

Make the Ignatian Spiritual Exercises “If you always imagine God in the same way, no matter how true and beautiful it may be, you

will not be able to receive the gift of the new ways

He has ready for you.” ~Carlos Valles, S.J.

The Ignatian Spiritual Exercises is a pilgrimage of a spiritual search for the fulfillment of a desire for holiness. The pilgrimage is about praying, searching, exploring and discovering; it is a journey with God and a journey to(ward) God. Christ Jesus is the pilgrim’s companion as one learns to walk the life journey path as Jesus. Jesus asks: “What are you looking for?” (Jn1:38) and “Come and see.” (Jn 1:39). Those who engage in the Spiritual Exercises discover a response to “What is God asking of me?” The Exer-cise experience is good for increasing openness to the movement of the Holy Spirit strengthening and sup-porting one in the effort to respond ever more faithfully to the love of God.

The full Spiritual Exercises may be done in the midst of ordinary daily life at home. It involves a daily commitment of 45-60 minutes in prayer and reflection centered on the themes of the Exercises and a weekly meeting with Linda Chevalier, Spiritual Director for ap-proximately eight or nine months. Linda meets with the Exercise pilgrim on a weekly basis at her home which allows for reflective conversation and confidentiality. The cost for the Spiritual Exercises is to offer your di-rector a stipend, payable to the director over the course of the retreat. You will have a discussion about the precise details during your first conversation.

If you feel drawn to make the Ignatian Exercis-es in Daily Life first pray about it and if you still feel drawn toward making the Exercises contact Linda Chevalier (810.229.9734) or [email protected]
