“And we know...”Amanda Sweat

Romans 8:28 is a verse I hear quoted often by many people; however, it wasn’t until I was saved last year that I truly was able to grasp the meaning and promise within the verse. The verse says, “God works for the good of those who love Him and are called according to His purpose.”

Now, at first glance, when reading this verse one might assume that it means that whoever loves God will never experience heartache - that they will always be happy, have tons of money, and live until they are 100. Well, as much as I don’t want to I am going to burst that bubble. Unfortunately, we don’t live in a perfect world and even the people that seem to “have it all together” or seem to “have it all” don’t. The fact is we all are going to experience death at some point. Some of us will incur tons of debt, some will go through serious bouts of depression, etc. But there is a promise we have amidst all of this...“God works for the good of those who love Him and are called according to His purpose.”

God never promised that when we accepted Him as our Savior that life would be one big ball of sunshine or that we would forever have it easy. He did give us Romans 8:28 along with many other verses full of hope and love to get us through the valleys of life. I truly believe with all my heart that in every situation of life God can make something wonderful happen even amidst pain, sorrow and hopelessness.

Someone might ask how He can bring goodness out of death. I think about the many people that have given their hearts to the Lord at a funeral. Or how can He use a sickness to bring about good? I’ve heard story after story of people who’ve grown closer to the Lord through an illness. That, in my opinion, is Him working to the good. Even something like having to get new tires but not having the money. He can work that for the good by urging someone who has more to financially help out the one in need. The blessing that both receive is amazing.

So you see, even though life might not always be full of sunshine, God left us with this promise no matter what the situation is. We just have to have faith in Him and His ways.

From the Pastor’s Heart...On January 1, we will begin an important 75-day journey together that will determine the direction of our church for the next five years. Our focus will be reviewing and renewing the convictions and commitments of our membership at FBC Sevierville. RE:NEW will result in a stronger church and a new vision for our mission. As your pastor, I ask you to make this a priority in your life.

Your RE:NEW booklet will become a valuable tool during this spiritual journey. It contains information for a daily quiet time. As you reflect on the chosen passages of Scripture, I will be praying that you will allow God to speak to you and open your eyes to see what He has for you there. The daily “Prayer Points” will guide you during your prayer time.

Several special events have been planned during RE:NEW. As you review the schedule, I hope you will mark your calendar and commit to be here for “INVITE” on March 16, the final event of the 75 days.

If you are going to make a New Year’s resolution, let it be this one: to not miss a single day spending time with God during this campaign. Resolve to give Him your undivided attention as you seek real renewal for yourself and your church. Just imagine what can happen if we all give the first part of 2014 to our Lord by making new commitments and growing in grace!

I loved being your pastor in 2013 and cannot wait to see where the Lord will lead us together during 2014. So, Ready...Set...Let’s Go!

pare with God and His blessings. The Bible gives us clear directions to protect us for a better life. In this text wisdom is personified as a lady. In Vesre 7 of this chapter, we find wisdom is the principal thing. Therefore, get wisdom and in all your getting get understanding. Exalt her and she will promote you. She will bring you honor, when you embrace her. Lady wisdom gives us God’s prospective on life and on what we should do. Wisdom promotes godliness and, in this text, some practical things we can do as believers to make our goals and plans stick.

Here are some questions that we can ponder as we go forward to 2014: 1. What will we do to protect our heart?

2. What will we do to discipline our speech? 3. What will we do to discipline our eyes?

4. What will we do to protect our path?

For each of us, God has a designed path. He has, on purpose, set before us life with a purpose. He gives us the responsibility to make decisions that effects our lives. In 2014, let’s be careful to examine our hearts, our speech, and our vision (what are we looking at and what are we listening to). Let’s be absolutely given to the will of God and the path He has set in place for us!

Happy 2014!

A New YearRoyce BaileyAssociate Pastor of Children

Proverbs 4:23-27, “Keep your heart with all diligence, for out of it spring the issues of life, put away from you a deceitful mouth and put perverse lips far from you. Let your eyes look straight ahead and your eyelids look right before you, ponder the path of your feet, and let all your ways be established. Do not turn to the right or the left; Remove your foot from evil.”

In a New Year, it is customary to set goals or plans. Some may call it resolutions, but here’s the bottom line: a New Year allows us opportunities for a better life. As I was reading this scripture, I was reminded that there’s nothing on the earth that can com-
