Pastor’s Corner - October 2016

Dear Friends in Christ,

If you worshipped with us Sunday September

25, you would have heard one of your council

members share the incredible news that our

giving this year is up over last year at this

time by more than $33,000! Let that sink

in…that is only possible if God has been ac-

tive in you. Thank you for God-sized year.

We are also winding down our three-year Be

the Church appeal at the end of December.

To date, we have met every goal. Now, we

are filling a bucket that will go to paying

down our loan balance should we not need

any of it to meet any mortgage payment this

fall. God truly is doing amazing things here!

We basically passed a God-sized budget in

February- including $60,000 of which we had

Hospitality Corner

What does it mean? It means the friendly and

generous reception and entertainment of guests,

visitors, or strangers. Hospitality teams will

begin their second year in action in September

2016. The teams are responsible for helping out

with one worship service hour, one Sunday per

month. If you are interested in helping out with

a hospitality team, please contact Shelly McNitt

at [email protected] or call 715-246-2133 ext. 25, so we can get you “plugged-in”.

First Lutheran decals are for sale $3 each or 2 for $5. They are available from Shelly McNitt or at

the welcome center after each worship service.

First Lutheran apparel is coming soon. We are putting the final touches on our apparel store with

no idea where it would come from! We fear-

lessly took on the challenge. There is time to

still meet our mission and ministry goals.

We are roughly $12,500 behind in our commit-

ments to ELCA ministries and our missions.

Typically, we fall behind in the summer and

make up the ground in the fall.

We can do this. We have made it more con-

venient with our new FREE First Lutheran

app, which you will find at the Google Play

Store or the Apple Store. You can also give

online securely at our website.

Please prayerfully consider our God-sized

dreams, and our God-sized needs to carry out

our mission and ministries, and join in the

God-sized joy.

Four Reasons to Welcome Smartphone Use in the Worship Service From Thom Rainer Blog; September 15, 2016

By Jonathan Howe

Smartphones have become ubiquitous in our culture. There’s no denying the influence of the

smartphone on the rise of social media, changes in commercial marketing, and even the church.

Rarely a week goes by without me receiving an email, message, or tweet from a pastor or church

leader asking about church apps, social media strategies, or mobile website functionality. “Don’t

leave home without it” applies more to our smartphones than it ever did to American Express. And it

applies when people are headed into their weekly worship service as well.

Before I get to the specifics of the post, allow me a couple of caveats. I’m not saying people should be

piddling away on their smartphones in the worship service. If you can’t have your phone out and re-

frain from playing games or catching up on email during a worship service, then keep it put away.

The same would go for tablets. But as you will see below, these four reasons all involve using your

smartphone to share or enhance what’s going on in the worship service.

Using a Bible app. This may be the most basic use of a smartphone while in a worship service.

While many still prefer a hard copy of God’s Word (myself included), a digital app version is

quite convenient.

Taking notes. Many, if not all, of the leading Bible apps allow for note taking. This is helpful if

you like to keep digital records of your sermon notes. Evernote, the native Notes app, Pages, or

even Word can all be used to catalog sermon notes as well. For some, digital sermon notes are

actually preferred to handwritten ones simply because they can be searched and indexed so

much easier.

Tweeting quotes. This is the main way I use my smartphone while in a worship service. This is

similar to taking notes, but you share the quote instead of keeping it to yourself. One piece of

advice on this particular smartphone use: ensure that you use an app like Buffer or Hootsuite

that doesn’t automatically pull up your social media feed. You’re less likely to be distracted by

what’s in your Twitter feed if all you see is an input box. I only use Buffer for sending out ser-

mon quotes for this particular reason.

Online or text giving. As online giving and text giving become more prevalent, smartphone us-

age for them will only increase. If you’re promoting online giving or text giving during the offer-

tory, it only makes sense that people would use their smartphones to participate in worship

through giving.

Two final reminders: Pastor,

when you see someone on his/

her phone during worship, it’s

not always a bad thing.

Worshipper, if you’re on your

phone during a worship service,

make sure what you are doing is

related to what’s going on in the

service

Sunday School and

Wednesday Adventures This year we have moved to a rotation format

to help us accomplish the following goals:

Teaching our children to be critical

thinkers about theological ideas so

that they will be equipped to engage

in meaningful conversations as they

grow and become engaged with the

world outside of their homes and

home communities.

Helping our children form relationships

and friendships with children their

age and with caring adults in our con-

gregation.

Equipping our children with ideas, and

the tools they need to carry out those

ideas, on how to live out their faith in

their daily lives.

To accomplish these goals, we have established

a three session rotation format:

Welcome Station – in this station chil-

dren watch a 3-4-minute video about

the daily lesson, our lessons follow

the lectionary so that what is being

discussed in worship is also being dis-

cussed in Sunday School, and have a

discussion about the video/lesson that

helps them develop their critical

thinking skills.

Hear Station – in this station children

read the Bible story together and play

a game or participate in an activity

that reinforces the Bible story/daily

lesson and helps them form friend-

ships with each other.

Respond Station – in this station the

children create a craft or participate

in an activity that gives them ideas of

how to incorporate the lessons they

learned in their daily lives.

In order to have a successful program we

need your help. We need Shepherds for each

grade level at all three education time peri-

ods. A Shepherds job is to “herd” the chil-

dren from station to station and assist the

station leader when needed. A Shepherd po-

sition is a longer term commitment but re-

quires no teaching or planning of lessons. A

Shepherd shows up on Sunday or Wednes-

day corrals their group and moves them

from station to station – it cannot get any

easier than that!

Station Leaders on the other hand lead one

station for a one-month period. For instance,

if you are leading the Welcome Station each

Sunday or Wednesday you introduce the les-

son, show the video, and engage the children

in caring conversations with questions that

are provided for you. All the material you

need to lead your station, this applies to all

of the stations, is provided for you. You pick

up your folder before your month begins,

read through it, let us know if you have any

questions and lead your station. Each sta-

tion has a bucket with all the supplies you

will need.

We hope that asking for a one-month com-

mitment for the station leaders will accom-

plish several things:

We do not burn out our volunteers.

The children get to engage with more

caring adults in the congregation.

The children get to see and hear from

a variety of people, male, female,

young, middle aged and seniors.

And that is our how we hope to run our pro-

gram but to do so we need all of you – we

need you, to help us, help you in passing on

the faith.

Train children in the right way, and when old, they will not stray.

Sense & Sensibility at the Guthrie!!

Hosted by Joan Johnson

That’s right – a trip to the Guthrie for Jane Aus- ten’s Sense& Sensibility

in late 19th Century England. Elinor is the older and more reserved of

the two, while Marianne is a free spirit who pushes against the

tage in the countryside with their mother, and meet the vari-

ous suitors who turn up at their door. Will any of them prove an

intellectual match for the girls?

10:30am – Bus will leave

11:30 – Arrival Take time to explore the Guthrie, shop, or have lunch.

of options within walking distance.

I decided to become a Stephen Minister to

learn more about my spirituality and how to

share that with others. I was excited to find

ways to serve others in our congregation.

Now I am equipped with the tools to humbly

walk along side another person during

tough times and celebrate the blessings

that God has given them. I learned to listen

with a purpose and just love people where

they are at.

Grace Place – Resident Count

Climbs, So Does Need For Food Fourteen years we’ve provided an evening

meal the 1st Wednesday of the month for

residents at Grace Place, first in Somerset

and now at 505 W 8th St, New Richmond.

Originally, 12 residents called Grace Place

Home. Currently, fifty to 60 men, women

and children are residents at the

transitional housing sponsored by the

Salvation Army and MANY service org.,

church groups and individuals. Sixty two

residents is capacity. As the numbers have

increased, so is our need for additional

volunteers to provide food. Six individuals/

families are needed to provide the food

we serve per month.

Serving a Meal – What does that involve?

Volunteer (sign your name) on Grace Place

Volunteer Sheet on Volunteer Easel near the

rear of Church. You’ll be contacted. You’ll be

asked to provide a casserole, salad or dessert

for a meal the 1st Wed of the month. You do

not need to be present for the 5:30 dinner

hour. However a benefit of being present is

visiting and eating with the residents. Resi-

dents will assist with dinner set up and will

do the clean up.

Next serving date is Wed, Sept 7.

Thank You, you’ll find it a blessing to serve

the residents.

Green bucket represents total given as of 8/31/16

Yellow bucket shows the amount paid towards our monthly mortgage payment. Note: yellow

bucket is above the other buckets because it gets paid first. Should a month occur where not

Purple bucket shows what is being saved to establish new staff ministries to meet current
