CHURCH COUNCIL HIGHLIGHTS The Church Council met on Monday November 21 2017 In attendance were Lola Davis-son Rebecca Kennedy Charles Lindsey Marilyn Lindsey Donna Magruder Gabby Peters

Sandy Peters Mark Schell Ken Stewart Linda Swearingen Rev Mark Watson and Janelle Ze-

hren

The meeting was called to order by Chairman Charles Lindsey at 700pm Pastor Mark opened the meeting with a devotion and prayer

Mark Schell gave the Treasurerrsquos Report We are below budget at this time but need to

consider raising money for repairs on the building Rebecca Kennedy reported that the SPR Com-mittee has completed the church profile and pastor evaluation and that all was positive For the

Lay Leadership Committee report Pastor Mark presented Debbie Hallum as our new Lay Leader

Lola Davisson made a motion to approve Debbie It was seconded by Sandy Peters Motion

passed Lola Davisson (Sunday School) reported that our numbers are not consistent but all classes have teachers that are working very hard She also reported that the UMW will meet on

December 6th and that the Visitation Committee members are still visiting our homebound mem-

bers mdash visiting 6 on their last visit Sandy Peters (Worship Committee) said there have been some changes to the advent schedule and that the Joybells will be providing music at the Snow-

man Wonderland (Reynolds Wellness Center) on December 19th and invited everyone to attend

Janelle Zehren reported that the Thanksgiving lunch was a success and that they also served a light supper at the Charge Conference the next evening

Pastor Markrsquos report included that we are still needing blue paraments for the Advent sea-

son It was voted in January 2017 to purchase them from the flower fund but a dollar amount

was not listed Pastor Mark will have prices at the next meeting for the paraments as well as ban-ners for the different seasons

Under Open Topics Marilyn Lindsey suggested that we drop the Ideas Committee and

make it an online discussion to keep track of ongoing projects etc It would be on the website under the password protected area so it would be visible only to church family It was suggested

that she have a table in the Narthex if she is trying to get people to help in different areas She

was told to give it a try and see if it works The next meeting will be on December 18th The meeting was adjourned with prayer at 710pm

Service of Las Pasadas (Service of Shelter for the Holy Family) ldquoIn the Hispanic tradition of Latin America countries especially in Mexico one of the oldest celebra-tions is Las Pasadasrdquo It was created by a Catholic priest in 1587 and it was hoped the service would help introduce Christianity to the New World ldquoThe celebration takes place during Advent from De-cember 16 through December 23rd with a special service on December 24 It is preparation for and anticipation of the birth of the Savior commemorating the nine months when Mary carried the infant Jesus in her womb and emphasizing his coming again and the need of all persons for repentance and Godrsquos mercyrdquo Our Service of Las Pasadas will take place on Christmas Eve at the 11pm service but here is what the service looks like if it happens every day for the 8 day period ldquoWell ahead of time eight homes of church members are chosen in different areas for the eight nights prior to Christmas Eve These homes should be willing to have a house party including a pintildeata to be broken by a child The pintildeata represents the devil who cannot be recognized and therefore the child is blindfolded The child is fighting against evil with the rod of virtue symbolized in the stick provided to break the pintildeata When the child perseveres to the end the glory of God will come down on everyone as shown by the candy hidden with the pintildeata The homes may also offer cups of hot chocolate coffee apple cider or punch bunuelos tamales hot doughnuts sweet rolls all kinds of avocado and other dips or other refreshments Each family should also visit neighbors and invite them to the Las Pasadasrdquo We will open our midnight Christmas Eve service by following the liturgy suggested in the United Methodist Book of Worship We will begin in the Fellowship Hall then enter the doors of our sanctuary to finish the service The service will include a homily communion and a celebration as Christ as the light of the world It is going to be a great service so I hope you are planning on inviting a friend or two to join you

The church has adopted a family here in Seminole for Christmas The family consists of one grand-mother and 3 children They have all been adopted and presents are being purchased for them We would like to make this holiday even more spe-cial by providing a food basket If you would like to donate to this basket please see Donna or leave your donation in the office

Our Joybells (handbell choir) will be performing at the Snowman Wonderland (Reynolds Wellness Center) on Tuesday December 19th Everyone is invited to come out and listen to some Christ-mas music and enjoy the Snowman Wonderland activities FREE HOTDOGS COOKIES AND DRINKS FACEPAINTING TRAMRIDES AROUND THE POND TO SEE THE LIGHT DISPLAYS (Be sure to look for the light display from the Seminole First United Methodist Church)

Disciple Bible Study The brave adventurers who began a 34-week trek through the Bible will conclude their study of the Old Testament on December 10th We will take a short break and return to begin the New Testament portion of the study on January 14th We will continue to meet at 4pm in the Confer-ence Room The New Testament portion of the Disciple Bible study will conclude on May 6th 2018 if we meet on the Sunday before and after Spring Break If you purchased a student book but just havenrsquot found the time to participate then try again in January If you are interested in participating in the New Testament study then let Mark know There are two books in his office just waiting to be used plus we can order more Hope a few of you will join us in the Spring

Service of Las Pasadas (Service of Shelter for the Holy Family) ldquoIn the Hispanic tradition of Latin America countries especially in Mexico one of the oldest celebra-tions is Las Pasadasrdquo It was created by a Catholic priest in 1587 and it was hoped the service would help introduce Christianity to the New World ldquoThe celebration takes place during Advent from De-cember 16 through December 23rd with a special service on December 24 It is preparation for and anticipation of the birth of the Savior commemorating the nine months when Mary carried the infant Jesus in her womb and emphasizing his coming again and the need of all persons for repentance and Godrsquos mercyrdquo Our Service of Las Pasadas will take place on Christmas Eve at the 11pm service but here is what the service looks like if it happens every day for the 8 day period ldquoWell ahead of time eight homes of church members are chosen in different areas for the eight nights prior to Christmas Eve These homes should be willing to have a house party including a pintildeata to be broken by a child The pintildeata represents the devil who cannot be recognized and therefore the child is blindfolded The child is fighting against evil with the rod of virtue symbolized in the stick provided to break the pintildeata When the child perseveres to the end the glory of God will come down on everyone as shown by the candy hidden with the pintildeata The homes may also offer cups of hot chocolate coffee apple cider or punch bunuelos tamales hot doughnuts sweet rolls all kinds of avocado and other dips or other refreshments Each family should also visit neighbors and invite them to the Las Pasadasrdquo We will open our midnight Christmas Eve service by following the liturgy suggested in the United Methodist Book of Worship We will begin in the Fellowship Hall then enter the doors of our sanctuary to finish the service The service will include a homily communion and a celebration as Christ as the light of the world It is going to be a great service so I hope you are planning on inviting a friend or two to join you

The church has adopted a family here in Seminole for Christmas The family consists of one grand-mother and 3 children They have all been adopted and presents are being purchased for them We would like to make this holiday even more spe-cial by providing a food basket If you would like to donate to this basket please see Donna or leave your donation in the office

Disciple Bible Study The brave adventurers who began a 34-week trek through the Bible will conclude their study of the Old Testament on December 10th We will take a short break and return to begin the New Testament portion of the study on January 14th We will continue to meet at 4pm in the Confer-ence Room The New Testament portion of the Disciple Bible study will conclude on May 6th 2018 if we meet on the Sunday before and after Spring Break If you purchased a student book but just havenrsquot found the time to participate then try again in January If you are interested in participating in the New Testament study then let Mark know There are two books in his office just waiting to be used plus we can order more Hope a few of you will join us in the Spring
