Service of Las Pasadas (Service of Shelter for the Holy Family) ldquoIn the Hispanic tradition of Latin America countries especially in Mexico one of the oldest celebra-tions is Las Pasadasrdquo It was created by a Catholic priest in 1587 and it was hoped the service would help introduce Christianity to the New World ldquoThe celebration takes place during Advent from De-cember 16 through December 23rd with a special service on December 24 It is preparation for and anticipation of the birth of the Savior commemorating the nine months when Mary carried the infant Jesus in her womb and emphasizing his coming again and the need of all persons for repentance and Godrsquos mercyrdquo Our Service of Las Pasadas will take place on Christmas Eve at the 11pm service but here is what the service looks like if it happens every day for the 8 day period ldquoWell ahead of time eight homes of church members are chosen in different areas for the eight nights prior to Christmas Eve These homes should be willing to have a house party including a pintildeata to be broken by a child The pintildeata represents the devil who cannot be recognized and therefore the child is blindfolded The child is fighting against evil with the rod of virtue symbolized in the stick provided to break the pintildeata When the child perseveres to the end the glory of God will come down on everyone as shown by the candy hidden with the pintildeata The homes may also offer cups of hot chocolate coffee apple cider or punch bunuelos tamales hot doughnuts sweet rolls all kinds of avocado and other dips or other refreshments Each family should also visit neighbors and invite them to the Las Pasadasrdquo We will open our midnight Christmas Eve service by following the liturgy suggested in the United Methodist Book of Worship We will begin in the Fellowship Hall then enter the doors of our sanctuary to finish the service The service will include a homily communion and a celebration as Christ as the light of the world It is going to be a great service so I hope you are planning on inviting a friend or two to join you
The church has adopted a family here in Seminole for Christmas The family consists of one grand-mother and 3 children They have all been adopted and presents are being purchased for them We would like to make this holiday even more spe-cial by providing a food basket If you would like to donate to this basket please see Donna or leave your donation in the office
