United Methodist Church Shirts
It has been some time since we ordered shirts with our church name and logo printed on them. We have noticed that many of our shirts are faded and have seen better days; we would like to also give the new members an opportunity to order their first shirts with us. Be on the lookout in a few weeks there will be an insert in our church bulletin for you to order either a short-sleeve or long-sleeve denim shirt. Looking forward to seeing our members in nice new shirts!

making pilgrimage So I grew up the son of a wandering engineer – wandering is inside of me. When this wandering is toward the
sacred, it is often called a pilgrimage. This May I have the opportunity to go wander a bit and make a pilgrimage to the
Island of Iona, Scotland. An early Christian, St. Columba, established a monastery on Iona and evangelized the Island of
Scotland. Columba worked among the historic peoples called the Picts and Celts. Throughout history this monastery has
fallen into disrepair and refurbishment. At present, it is in full repair and use. The Abbey of Iona is a place of pilgrimage
for many people of faith.
I’ll be traveling with a group called The Missional Wisdom Foundation that is based in Dallas and western North
Carolina. The Rev. Larry Duggins and the Rev. Dr. Elaine Heath founded this ministry as a means of establishing new
forms of intentional Christian community to share faith with people in the 21st Century. Dr. Heath has recently been
appointed as the Dean of Duke Divinity School, my alma mater. I have known Elaine since 2010 when we met at a seminar
series I was attending. I remain intrigued and shaped by her friendship, writing, and leadership in both the United Methodist
Church and the larger body of Christ.
I’ll be traveling from May 18 – 28, arriving at Iona on Friday, May 20, beginning the journey home Friday, May 27.
Below are some links for your information about my trip. I will be posting to Facebook occasionally if you wish to keep up
with me while I’m on this pilgrimage. On May 3, I will be sharing a book review with the United Methodist Women,
Pilgrimage of a Soul, by Phileena Heuertz, which I read in January, 2011, while I was on my annual monastery retreat. This
pilgrimage to Iona is in part the fruit of seeds planted from this book.

Confirmation Sunday – A Special Day of Worship May 15, 2016
8:15 a.m. – Traditional Worship in Sanctuary 10:30 a.m. – Blended Worship in Sanctuary
12:00 p.m. – New Member Luncheon
Fifty years ago a Philadelphia congregation watched as three 9-year old boys were baptized and joined the church. Not long after, unable to continue with its dwindling membership, the church sold the building and disbanded.
One of those boys was Dr. Tony Campolo, author, alumnus and professor of Christian sociology at Eastern University in St. David’s, Pennsylvania. Dr. Campolo remembers: “Years later when I was doing research in the archives of our denomination, I decided to look up the church report for the year of my baptism. There was my name, and Dick White’s. He’s now a missionary. Bert Newman, now a professor of theology at an African seminary, was also there. Then I read the church report for “my” year. “It has not been a good year for our church. We have lost 27 members. Three joined, and they were only children.’”
The Kingdom of God operates from a different perspective than the rest of the world. The pastor of that church so many years ago saw only children. But God saw a world-wide ministry. The pastor saw only a dwindling church. But God saw the countless lives touched by the ministries of those three boys.
Six young people will come to make a profession of faith on May 15th Pentecost Sunday – the birthday of the church. I can’t think of a better day to welcome six new souls into our church family. The day we profess our faith is our birthday also. It is the day that we let the world know that we are Christians. In the early church new members wore white and received a Christian name. Each person became a new creature in Christ. This year’s Confirmands are: Robin Aguilar, Elizabeth Chisholm, Beckett Dalman, Sammi Rhyme, Ian Sedlar, and Ally Trostle.
I am excited about celebrating with these young people. Mark your calendars for the big day. Let’s welcome these youth and let them know that they are part of this church and our faith community.
See you Sunday, Kay

Dear FUMC,
There are just not adequate words to express how much you all have touched my heart during the most difficult loss of my life. My father meant the world to me, and I know your prayers are carrying me through. Thanks so much for all the kind and very thoughtful cards, prayers, visits, calls, memorials, and attendance at both his visitation and funeral. Calling this church my church home and church family is truly a blessing. Thanks again from the bottom of my heart for all you do and have done for me! God Bless You All, Meagan Hargrave and Family

Thanks FUMC!
Thanks go out to all those who included Bill in their prayers. We are past the gall bladder surgery and the resulting blood clot scare. We greatly appreciate the cards, phone calls and visits. We have an awesome caring congregation.
Praise God! Dianne & Bill Davenport Hi Friends! I just wanted to send a quick note to thank you all for your gift! Your kindness and support will be greatly used to continue an incredible ministry that share the message of hope to many. Together we can leave a lasting impact and transform precious lives all across the globe. We are so grateful for you!
God Bless! Meredith (with World Help)
