Backpack Buddies have arrived! It's that time of year! Tags and instructions will be available for pickup in the Church Office or on Sundays in the Family Life & Worship Center or the 2nd floor landing of the main building. We ask that all backpacks be
returned no later than Wednesday July 30th. What's a Backpack Buddy you ask? First United Methodist has part-nered yearly with an interdenominational ministry to provide backpacks and school supplies to low-income children in Temple ISD. This year,
FUMC has committed to providing 200 backpacks and supplies to Ken-nedy Powell Elementary and Travis Science Academy (Middle School).
Simply pick up a tag & instructions, write your name on the list, and bring back a backpack full of supplies. If you would like to partner with a
friend to provide, that's great! If you are not keen on shopping for school supplies, we'll help you out! Checks can be made to FUMC with "Backpack Buddies" in the memo line. It costs approx. $40 per back-
pack & supplies. Thank you so much for helping with this important ministry!
Amanda will need help delivering backpacks on August 4th.
Please contact Amanda if you are able to help deliver.
Border Crisis On Sunday, August 3, 2014, we invite you to participate in a special Communion Rail Offering benefitting those working in the midst of the Texas Border Crisis. All monies placed on the altar railing will be sent to the UM agencies working at the border and will directly benefit the many innocent victims in-volved. Let us show the love of Christ to those in need. "I was hungry and you gave me food to eat. I was thirsty and you gave me a drink. I was a stranger and you welcomed me. I was na-ked and you gave me clothes to wear. I was sick and you took care of me. I was in prison and you visited me....when you have done it for the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you have done it for me [Jesus]." (Mat 25:35, 40b) If you are unable to attend on August 3rd, you may find links on
our website and Facebook page to give electronically. For the
latest updates and a letter from the UM Bishops of Texas, you
can go to this link: http://ctcumc.org/pages/detail/2533.

Family Promise Returns to FUMC! As part of our call to love and serve those in our community, especially those who struggle with homelessness, we will be participating in Family Promise ministries of Temple beginning this fall. Family Promise is a ministry of radical hospitality that helps families transition from homelessness to permanent resi-dency in partnership with a number of area churches. The church's part is to provide shelter, fellowship, and some meals for one week at a time. This will happen about once per quar-ter. We will need lots of volunteers as well as donations of money, food, and other items. Watch for an announcement very soon about an introductory meeting after church some Sunday. We'll provide lunch and an opportunity for you to learn more about this ministry and how you can get involved. In the mean-time, please be in prayer for this wonderful outreach ministry and your potential role in it. And, as always, please contact me if you have questions or would like to get involved. "So welcome each other, in the same way that Christ also wel-
comed you, for God's glory." (Rom 15:7) God bless, Pastor Jannette

Special Summer Sundays in Wellspring
First United Methodist Church of Temple
Sunday August 10th: Sixties Sunday
Join the Wellspring Worship team for a retro Sunday as we
flashback almost 50 years with the pop and rock music of the 1960’s.
The summer of love returns as the summer of God’s love. Yes, there
were actually hit songs that talked about Jesus! So, dig out your old tie-
dye T shirt and bring a friend for a Sunday of peace, love and music at
both 8:30 and 11 in the Family Life and Worship Center August 10.
PRAY FOR OUR BOLIVIA TEAM! On Monday, July 21st, a team of 12 Kingdom workers traveled to
Quesimpuco, Bolivia to engage in the mission of making disciples of
Jesus Christ through service and love to the people there. The team
members are: Michael Jackson, Allen Roark, Joel Lowry, Amanda
Herridge, Ben Allen, Rev. Jason Hamilton, David Petty, Ken Jarrell,
Jamie Johnson, Hayleigh Bennett (our only youth team member),
Heather Reddick, and Conrad Schaefer (the last two are not from our
church, but are still an important part of our team and need our
prayers). The group will return on July 30th. Your continued prayers
are appreciated.
Thank you for your faithful love and support of our Missionaries as
we together fulfill the Great Commission (Mat 28:19-20).
Pastor Jannette
FAITHFUL CONNECTIONS SUNDAY SCHOOL CLASS
Beginning on Sunday, August 3rd, Faithful Connections adult Sunday School class will begin a series of studies based on "The Wired Word" wherein, each week we will pick a current event from that weeks news and make every effort to place that story in a biblical context with scriptural references. Every Thursday you will receive an email with the following:
In the News discusses a current event to be analyzed in a
biblical context each week.
The Big Questions provide a framework for the discussion.
Use them as is, or revise to include your own commen-
tary and perspectives.
Confronting the News with Scripture provides the substance
of the lesson along with suggestions on how group
members can apply Scripture passages covered that
week to their daily lives.
If you would like to join us for these stimulating and thoughtful discussions, please send your name and email address to Dr. Sprague Taveau at [email protected] before Thursday July 31, 2014 or by Wednesday of any week thereafter.
COATS & BLANKETS NEEDED FOR
ANNUAL NOVEMBER THANKSGIVING MEAL In the July heat most of us are not thinking about coats and blan-
kets, but the Girlfriends in God are. Now is the time to start mak-
ing our “No Sew” fleece blankets and collecting coats to be dis-
tributed at the Thanksgiving meal. Last year we made over 100
blankets, this year we want to do more. Material and donations
are needed for this project- 2 yards each of fleece, 1 in a solid
color and 1 in a coordinating print. We also need people to help,
some to cut, some to tie and some to do both. If you would like to
help with this worthwhile project, please contact Melanie Morrow
(505-220-7198) for more information.
Want to be a friend in faith? Each year, we pair each of our
confirmands (6th graders) with an adult that serves as a spiritual guide and friend to lead them through this exciting time of growth. We are offering training for those interested in serving as
a friend in faith on August 13 at 9:45 a.m. in the 6th
grade class-
room (Room 4 in the Youth Area located in the back part of the Family
Life & Worship Center). This training is required for all first-time
friends in faith, but is open to all who are interested. To sign up, e-mail
Pastor Jason at [email protected]
