First, I want to say thank you for all the positive comments about the Wesleyan Heritage sermon series that we just finished up. It was an adjustment from my normal preaching style and many of you were so kind with your feedback. I am so thankful to have a congregation that appreciates learning and hearing new things! In my next sermon series, I will be getting back into diving deep into the story of God’s people as we look at the story of Samuel. You may remember the stories of Samuel from Sunday school; his unexpected birth, his dedication to the temple by Hannah, his anointing of Saul and later David. These are the basic stories of his life, but these stories are laced with so much more than you probably heard in Sunday School. I am really looking forward to prepping for and preaching this series! (Especially, since I will get to break out another one of the fabulous books that I was able to buy with the birthday money that the Wednesday morning Bible Study ladies graced me with!) My prayer is that you will get to know Samuel in an entirely new way! The reason I love doing series like this is that there are so many Biblical characters that we know at a surface level. We have read and studied the Bible in such a way that we know the highlights, the obvious, and the most shining aspects of our Biblical heroes, but we rarely go much further to see the struggles, the hurt, the disappointments, the flaws, the anger and the doubts. It is in those spaces that we really get to know these people, relate to these people and learn from these people. I am afraid that many times the same is true with our relationships within the church. We may have a few close friends within the church but what about the lives and stories of others that we share pews with every week. We may know the highlights, the obvious, the most shining aspects about these folks but do we know the struggles, the hurt, the disappointments, the flaws, the anger and the doubts. I believe there are a couple reasons that we do not dive this deep with many in our church family. The first is simply time. We may ask someone every week how they are doing, expecting to hear a short positive surface level response. But are we willing to take the time to look behind the eyes and ask, “How are you, really?” A second reason we remain at the surface is that when we ask more meaningful questions of others, we open ourselves up to have the same questions asked of us! Are we willing to not only listen to the deeper stories of others but also open ourselves up to be seen on a deeper level? Are we willing to shed the stereotype that we have it all together? This is risky business, but the payoff is so good and leads us further in our development as humans and Christians. As we dig into the life of Samuel this month, I challenge you to dig into the lives of others, and open yourself up to others, so that we as a church can do life together on a more meaningful level. Be the church, Mel

Pastor’s Ponderings

Greetings Church!

Windows Restoration Project Update Salida United Methodist Church

Salida UMC and community friends are committed to care for the many Historic Treasures found within the building of the Salida United Methodist Church, built in 1899 (serving the Salida community since 1883).

In the summer/fall of 2018, we successfully completed the restoration of the 12 ft. x 19 ft. window in the Choir Room, which faces 4

th Street. With the

help of many church and community members who made that possible, we raised the necessary $57,000.00 to do so.

We are continuing our commitment to the historic preservation of our beautiful church, with the restoration of our D Street, 12x19 ft. stained glass window.

Our current fundraising effort is for funds to restore the second window in serious need, seen in these 3 photos. This window is also an original 1899 stained glass window on that same highly traveled corner, facing D. St.

We are currently working with our grant writer to prepare our State Historic Fund grant application for the necessary funding request. In preparation for this grant, we are required to provide a 25% cash match of the project total. We estimate our cash match to be $16,000. This money needs to be in our account before we can submit our grant application on October 1

st. We currently have $12,000.

IF YOU HAVE BEEN THINKING ABOUT WANTING TO GIVE TO THE WINDOWS FUND…NOW WOULD BE AN

IMPORTANT TIME TO DO SO!

This labor of love, will not only continue to preserve the beautiful and artful history of a prominent window in this church, it will also address a community safety concern, as this window faces a very highly traveled corner in Salida, for both pedestrians and vehicles. The degree of deterioration of the window makes this an urgent repair need.

OUR CHILDREN’S PROGRAM

Starting this month, our weekly Children’s Program returns during the worship service!

In the early part of the service, children will leave the sanctuary with the Sunday School teachers, following the Message for Young People. On Communion Sundays, the children will return to the sanctuary in time to participate in Communion with their families. On all other Sundays, parents may pick their children up in the Sunday School classroom.

On Sunday, September 29th after worship

and a brief fellowship, we will be holding a Children’s Program Orientation for anyone who may be interested in helping with the children’s program. Come check it out and see how you can help. We are in need of volunteers who will help a lead teacher with the planned activities. If you’re willing to help with the children’s program, or just want to see what it is all about, please plan to attend. We will meet in the Parlor!

Any questions, please see Licia Iverson or Ginny Biglow!

“SAVE A PIG” FUNDRAISER

September 1 – October 6

Greetings Church!

For the past few weeks we have been dropping hints about our new Save A Pig Fundraiser. I want to now spell out all the details for this fun way to help fund our church. Most anyone in Salida is familiar with the annual Pig Roast Dinner at Salida UMC. For the past 16 years, the Pig Roast was a wonderful church and community gathering that helped us to raise needed general funds. However, this dinner took many volunteer hours and had become too physically taxing for our congregation and community members who helped each year. In its place this year we will be Saving Pigs instead of consuming them!

Here is how this new fundraiser will work:

We will be asking you to donate to Save a Pig. Each Pig will cost $30, about the price you would have paid for two dinners at our Pig Roast. You could save one pig, three pigs or ten pigs! Everyone who saves at least one pig will receive a keepsake reminder of the fundraiser and will have the opportunity to hang a picture of your pig(s) on our display wall during Fellowship Time. Feel free to name your pig(s) or decorate your pig(s)!

Our goal is to raise a minimum of $3000 for our General Fund. At $30 a piece that is 100 pigs total. When we meet that goal, we will celebrate with a special pig themed Sunday Morning with all sorts of surprises and special moments! The rumor is that a pig costume has already been purchased in my size for that morning!

Checks may be made out to: Salida UMC Please write “Save A Pig” on the memo line.

You may place your check in the offering plate during worship, bring it to the office or mail it to the church at this address: Salida UMC PO Box 945 Salida, CO 81201

We hope that this new fundraiser will not only spare our congregation and community volunteers from a great deal of work, but also will be a lot of fun…and of course, meet our fundraising needs.

Be the church, Mel P.S. My pig’s name is Babe!
