SUNDAY SCHOOL 9:30 WORSHIP SERVICE 10:30
From the Colemine
I will sing to the Lord as long as I live; I will sing praise to my God while I have being. May my meditation be
pleasing to him, for I rejoice in the Lord. Psalm 104:33,34
While attending seminary I worked at a nursing home on the Alzheimer’s wing. Some of the people there didn’t
interact very much and couldn’t really hold a conversation of any kind. They would spend most of their time in a
wheelchair sitting staring off into space.
One day the chaplain of the nursing home came by and offered to sing a song for the people. He asked for a re-
quest, but no one responded. I suggested maybe he could sing “What a Friend We Have in Jesus”. He started to
sing and he had a wonderful voice that filled the room. Then all of a sudden, one of the ladies who I had never heard
talk in coherent sentences joined in. She knew every word and sang out loud and strong right along with the chap-
lain. Right after that she went right back to the way she was before, but for a brief moment she was praising God.
We tried singing with her a few times, hoping we could do the same thing, but it never happened again. A few
weeks later this dear old lady went to be with the Lord.
I have people ask me sometimes, “Why am I still here? Why doesn’t God just take me home?” Here in Psalm
104:33 it says, “I will sing to the Lord as long as I live; I will sing praise to my God while I have being.” Maybe the
reason is to give praise to God as long as we live. We might not be able to do a lot of things, but something we can
do is sing praises to God.
Whenever we go to the nursing home and sing songs with the people, a lot of them can’t read the words or even
sing out loud, but if you look at them, their lips are moving. They know the words and they join in as best they can
and they are singing in their heart. God hears them and knows they are giving him praise.
Let us all praise God in what we do, in what we say and how we live.
Pastor Steve

IT’S A BOY —- A warm welcome to the newest addition of our congregation, Winston Thomas Bishop! He was born September 29, 2015 - weighing 8 pounds, 8 ounces - to Will and Kristen Bishop. He was 21 inches in length at birth. Congratulations on your new arrival!
FUMC Family,
Thank you so much for the scholarship. I am so grateful and appreciative to be a part of
such a supportive church. School at KU is amazing, it’s the perfect place for me. Here at
the Methodist Church in Lawrence they have a program similar to Feeding Families in His
Name, called the Jubilee Cafe . I love getting to go there and serve, as it reminds me of
home and all my time at FUMC. Thank you so very much again!

Faith Builders in November
We will be continuing our
discussion of the Book of
Acts, looking at the days of
the early church. We will
look at the expansion of the
church into Asia and Eu-
rope. We will see how God
rescues Peter from a diffi-
cult situation, and see that
God makes no distinction in
offering salvation to both
Jews and Christians. Ad-
vent will begin with us dis-
cussing Paul’s mission to
Corinth, Syria and Ephesus.
We hope you will join us in
fellowship and Scripture.

We give thanks to you, O God;
we give thanks; your name
is near.
People tell of your wondrous deeds.
