Tom Frase The Bible begins this way: “In the beginning, God created …” And when our church began “The Story,” Tim and Kristi Nelson also began creating from the very beginning. Tim and Kristi had agreed to do a theme graphic for the story and to start doing bulletin boards in the Contemporary Worship Center for each chapter that we were reading. They intended to hand this off to others to complete. But as it turns out, having to think graphically about each of the chapters we were reading gave Tim and Kristi access to the biblical word in a whole new and deeper way. For the word of God is alive and active. ~ Hebrews 4:12a They completed 31 works of art that represented a key theme in each of the 31 chapters of The Story. And the creations they made were wonderful. Some were mosaics made from a thousand tiny pieces of paper. Some were scenes depicted with yarn, or a rooster made with feathers and buttons, or angle wings made from over 4000 coffee filters. All were unique and creative. And all were meaningful not only to Tim and Kristi, but to all of us who were blessed by them. They gave depth to the The Story we were reading each week. We wanted to hang to to these for a bit longer, so they’re displayed in the common area of the UMAC building. Please go and take a look at the creativity and insights these works of art bring to the biblical story. Thank you Tim & Kristi. F R O M T H E S E N I O R P A S T O RA Modest Benediction for the New Year

I hear more and more today that the church in America is declining because the church is not relevant to the world today. Many feel that the church does more harm than good. The church causes division and hatred but preaches love and unity. The church is only interested in saving itself as an institution, and not in reaching the rest of the world. That the church gladly welcomes those who look like, talk like and believe like they do, but everyone else they don’t welcome, and in some cases condemn. And you’ve probably heard or read similar comments.

Some of this may be true — churches always have to fight a tendency to only look inward to their own needs and comforts. But like most sweeping statements like these, they are not completely true. But it tells me that in these days, the church has to be all the church they can be because the world is ready to write us off. We have to step up our game and be the Body of Christ in big and bold ways.

So, as we head into 2017, let me leave you with my favorite benediction. May it be so for you and our church in 2017.A Franciscan BenedictionMay God bless us with discomfortAt easy answers, half-truths, and superficial relationshipsSo that we may live from deep within our hearts.

May God bless us with angerAt injustice, oppression, and exploitation of God's creationsSo that we may work for justice, freedom, and peace.

May God bless us with tearsTo shed for those who suffer pain, rejection, hunger, and war,So that we may reach out our hands to comfort them andTo turn their pain into joy.

And may God bless us with just enough foolishnessTo believe that we can make a difference in the world,So that we can do what others claim cannot be done:To bring justice and kindness to all our children and all our neighbors who are poor.

Amen.

F R O M T H E A S S O C I AT E P A S T O RIt's that time of year again when many of us commit ourselves AGAIN to losing weight, exercising more, getting out of debt, sticking to a budget, stopping our vices, saving for the future, spending more time with family, paying more attention to our spiritual lives, etc.

Many of us (whether on paper or just in our minds) make resolutions this time of year, because we feel something missing in our lives and/or we feel some areas of our lives have gotten out of control.  And so, we resolve in the new year to take steps to improve ourselves and our quality of life.  For most people, our resolutions for the new year tend to revolve around four poles: money, health, family, spirituality.

Just in-case you haven’t settled on your resolutions for 2017 just yet … here are a few for your consideration:

Pray More. Spend more time talking with God to share with him your dreams, worries, struggles, etc. The Lord loves it when his children share their hearts and thoughts with him.

Invest in Growing Your Spiritual Gifts. There are many spiritual gifts (i.e., mercy, hospitality, prayer, administration, craftiness, helper, generosity, etc.). If you don’t know what your spiritual gifts are, you can find assessment tests online (or Tom & I could help). Once you’ve identified your spiritual gifts, find ways & opportunities to use and develop them. Our spirits flourish (and God’s kingdom benefits) when we use the gifts God gives us.

Engage in Spiritual Self-Care. Oftentimes we humans over-do, over-work, over-commit, and under-rest. God wove Sabbath into the fabric and tempo of earthly life, and most of us don’t pay nearly enough attention to observing it. Take time for rest, refreshment, and revitalization in the new year…everything & everyone in your life will benefit from us living more balanced lives.

Confront Life-Draining Patterns of Sin. Sin is a destroyer! Sin robs us of our peace and drives us further-and-further off the path God hopes we will follow. Confront the sins that are causing you to feel distanced from God and hurting you & others. Allow those sins to be put to death on the cross of Christ and receive the power to live a new life that pleases God.

Forgive. It is likely that all of us have at least some forgiveness work to do in our lives. God wants us to be free from the weight of unforgiveness and to experience his true & abiding peace.

Read More. Find some good books to read in 2017 that will edify your spirit and enhance your understanding of God, the church, your spiritual gifts, and serving others in Christ’s name.

This list of new year resolutions is certainly not exhaustive, but perhaps it can get you thinking and/or add to your own personal list. Don’t bite off more than you can chew (as the saying goes), rather create a resolution list that will be challenging, life changing, and fill your heart with a sense of spiritual growth and accomplishment. May the Lord be with you in 2017 and always.

It’s a joy to serve Christ with you,

Pastor Heather

This Month’s Featured MinistriesWe are called to know the Lord with our head, love Him with our heart, and serve Him with our hands – and there are many ways to step into service at First United Methodist Church. Each of us has unique gifts that we have been given to use in service. Consider what is a passion for you, for example is it assisting the elderly, or children, or youth, or those in need…what peaks your interest? Are you happiest behind the scenes or ‘upfront’? Pray about these things as you seek a role in service.

Bus Ministry The Sunday Bus Ministry provides transportation to and from church for those who are unable to drive themselves or find a ride. We are in need of more Sunday drivers. A CDL is not required to drive the small buses we use on Sundays. If you are interested in helping with this ministry on Sunday mornings or Wednesday afternoons, please call the church office.

Student Ministry This ministry is for students from 6th grade through 12th grade. MSM (middle school ministry) includes an after school lesson time on Wednesdays as well as six0seven youth worship Wednesday evenings during the school year. HSM (high school ministry) includes “hangout time” after school on Wednesdays and six0seven you worship Wednesday nights. Both groups also have Sunday School at 10:00 am.

Office Angels If you looking for a new ministry to be a part of and are interested in office work, this is the ministry for you!We need volunteers to help in the church office with answering the phones and manning the front desk as well as some clerical work and data entry. Please call the church if you think you might be interested in being a part of this ministry.

Prayer Shawl Ministry The purpose of a prayer shawl is to give someone a tangible example of God’s love. The maker of the shawl prays while working on the shawl. Recipients can be those in need of strength while undergoing medical procedures, comfort after a loss, peace and patience during an illness or for those celebrating a graduation, marriage or the birth of a child. The possibilities are endless!

Bud Vase Ministry Each week our United Methodist Women’s Group takes the altar flowers from Sunday’s services and breaks them down into small bud vase arrangements and delivers them to homebound and those in the hospital and nursing homes. So, when you provide the altar with flowers, it serves more than one purpose. You are able to touch the lives of many with this outreach ministry.

Happy New Year!! Can it be 2017?? I hope that everyone had a joyous Christmas, filled with all things wonderful! I know that I loved all of the services that we had. For me, it really started with the Children’s musical on December 16th. The songs were awesome and the children did a great job! Thanks to Ms. Bentley for a wonderful first semester! The Christmas Eve Eve service was so different from anything that we have done, and the manger scene involving all of the children in attendance was so sweet. The Christmas Eve service was in its “traditional-ness”, a service that I look forward to every year and the Christmas Day service was awesome! It’s not often that we get the chance to come to church and worship on Christmas Day, and I loved it!!

And now on to the New Year! Our Wednesday afternoon ministry started off with a bang on Jan. 4th! I think that the children were as glad to be back, as we were to see them!

On Sunday, January 22nd from 4:00-6:00 we will have “Bible Exploration” for those children that received a Bible in the fall. We spend some time, learning where things are in the Bible, learning about the books of the Bible, all through some fun games! Of course, what kind of gathering would it be if we didn’t have some refreshments!! So, if your child received a Bible in the fall, mark your calendars now!

Remember, as winter seems to be here, if the weather closes school, we will not have any activities at church!

Blessings for a great New Year!

Tomorrow’s Church our children

& youth

Well I guess I have to say it whether I want to or not. So here it goes: “Happy New Year”. As in most cases I find myself in a new yet familiar roll in the beginning of this year. As most of you know Kirby has moved on and is now youth director at Central Methodist in Fayetteville. I will miss him as a friend and confidant, but many of us will miss Jennifer more. So I, Kelly Yeakley, find myself back in the roll as Interim Youth Director, a position I held before Kirby Martens blessed us with his leadership. I want to thank him and Jennifer for their service to our church and especially the youth. You will always have my respect for your dedication to better our community.

It is my hope that we find a replacement as quick as possible. I also want it to be the right fit here at FUMCMH. With that said I will try to hold the youth together to my best ability and lead them toward the goals that we already have put before them. I am going to be asking a lot of others for help, being that this is a part time job for me. So parents, grandparents, cousins, uncles, aunts or whoever is in charge of a youth expect a call from me to help out and continue the great things that have already been started.

I ask for your prayers and your confidence as we begin our hunt for a new youth director.

Kelly Yeakley
