Georgetown College is proud of its charter First Tee Scholars: Ashley Corio, Christopher Hawkins and Steven Outlaw. These outstanding students played all four years on the College’s varsity golf team and had key roles in planning our previous invitational tournaments. Chris and Steven completed the PGA’s accelerated Professional Golf Management (PGM) School in Florida, made possible by Georgetown College’s unique partnership. Ashley now has a Master’s Degree in Clinical Psychology from Eastern Kentucky University.

“ The First Tee Scholars
program at Georgetown
College has been a huge
success as both an athletic
and academic program.
I am impressed with how
these young men and
women have truly lived
up to the meaning of the
word ‘Scholar.’ They have
thrived in our Christian
liberal arts environment
here at Georgetown,
and their attention to
academics is proving that
hard work never goes out
of style. I am so proud
of their success.”

“ All of us on the Board of Trustees
have been thrilled with the great
partnership between Georgetown College
and The First Tee organization. We take
great pride in how Georgetown got the
scholarship program going more than ten
years ago, and how it’s now grown to
include so many other colleges and
universities across the country. We take
even greater pride in the Scholars
themselves. These young men and women
have used their experience at Georgetown
College as a springboard to success.”

“ The legacy of The First Tee
Scholars Program at Georgetown
College is phenomenal. It was the
program that started it all for us,
and it’s now grown to some twenty
other colleges and universities
across the country. All of us at
First Tee are especially proud of
how the students at Georgetown
have gone on to such success after
graduation. That’s exactly what
we had in mind when we
formed the partnership, and it
inspires us to keep trying to
make it bigger and better.”

“ The PGA TOUR is appreciative
of the strong partnership that has
grown over the years between The
First Tee and Georgetown College.
We are delighted that participants
in the program have capitalized on
the experience to get off to a great
start in their careers. It’s especially
pleasing to us to see several of the
Georgetown graduates go to work
in the golf industry. The sport needs
a pipeline of young talent, and this
program is helping deliver great
prospects. Thank you to Georgetown
College and The First Tee for a
decade of outstanding success.”

Georgetown College’s George H. W. Bush Center
for Fitness is named for the 41st President of the
United States in recognition of the former
President’s support for physical fitness for all
Americans, particularly its youth, and to benefit the
$1.5 million endowment of The First Tee Scholars
program at the College. It also recognizes the
former President’s active role in the PGA and in
the development of The First Tee, an initiative of
the World Golf Foundation which focuses on
giving young people of all backgrounds the
opportunity to develop values such as honesty,
integrity and sportsmanship through golf and
character education.
Georgetown College, in 2003, became the first
college in America to provide scholarships to
young people who complete the program.
Georgetown president William H. Crouch, Jr., a
national member of The First Tee board, then
challenged his counterparts across the country to
follow his lead. Now, about 20 colleges and
universities provide at least two First Tee scholar-
ships. As of June 2012, Georgetown had 13 Scholars
enrolled representing chapters from Alabama,
Arkansas, Georgia, Illinois, Kentucky, Minnesota,
Missouri and Texas. Three current Scholars have
studied abroad - two in England, one in Hong Kong.
The PGA of America is vitally interested in The First
Tee - certainly for its emphasis on leadership, life
skills and ethics, but also for the diversity the
program brings back to the sport.
Georgetown College has the distinction of having
graduated the first two scholars of The First Tee in
2007, both of whom took advantage of the
College’s unique partnership by entering and
successfully completing the PGA’s accelerated
Professional Golf Management (PGM) School.

Georgetown College First Tee Scholars like these exceptional young people have gone on to great success.
“ “ Being a First Tee Scholar at
Georgetown College was a
dream come true for me. I
learned so much at Georgetown;
in the classroom, of course,
but also from all the friends
I made there. The entire
experience helped me get
started on a nice career, but
more importantly showed
me what was possible to
achieve in life. Thank you,
Georgetown, and thank you,
First Tee!”
I really appreciated the
opportunity to be a First Tee
Scholar at Georgetown College
because of the life experiences
I encountered and prevailed
through. This opportunity
opened many doors and
avenues, and eventually
propelled me to professional
success in my field. Without
The First Tee Scholar Program
and most importantly
Georgetown College, I couldn’t
tell you where I would be.”

First Tee ScholarsThe First Tee Scholars at Georgetown College have an outstanding legacy of success. It starts with the college’s Christian environment, which is welcoming and small enough to guarantee considerable warmth and personal attention. Scholars learn from great teachers, and develop lifelong friendships with other students who come from a richly diverse background and environment. And then, of course, there’s golf and all the leadership and values that come from The First Tee program and the game itself.
Excellence in the classroom, on the course, and after graduation
“ Being a First Tee Scholar was definitely one of the most influential
experiences of my life. The entire experience at Georgetown College was
tremendous, from the classroom to my fellow students to being able to
meet people like former President George H.W. Bush when he visited
the campus. Put simply, the program helped me in so many ways.”

“ When we started this program, we thought we were doing a favor for
these Scholars. But we’ve come to find out they have done us a much
bigger favor. All of us at the college have been been inspired by their
talent for academics, for golf, and especially for leadership. They truly
exemplify the three ways we describe what we’re about at Georgetown
College: To Live, Learn, and Believe.”
