A L O N E . . .
Do you ever fell compelled or driven to do something radi-cal for God? Jesus was led by the Holy Spirit to spend forty days and nights in prayer and fas ng in a lonely place. Why was he compelled to seek solitude for such a lengthy period? Was it simply a test to prepare him for his ministry? Or did Satan want to lure him into a trap?
The word tempt in English usually means to en ce to sin. The scriptural word here also means test in the sense of proving and purifying someone to see if there are ready for the task at hand.
Jesus was no excep on to the tes ng. Satan will surely tempt us and will try his best to get us to choose our will over God's will. If he can’t make us renounce our faith or sin mortally, he will then try to get us to make choices that will lead us, li le by li le, away from what God wants for us.
Jesus was tempted like us and he overcame not by his own human strength but by the grace and strength which his Father gave to him. He had to renounce his will for the will of his Fa-ther. He succeeded because he wanted to please his Father and he trusted that his Father would give him the strength to over-come the obstacles that stood in the way.
How can we overcome sin and oppression in our personal lives? The Lord gives us his Holy Spirit to be our strength, guide and consoler in tempta on and tes ng. The Lord Jesus is ever ready to pour out his Spirit upon us that we may have the strength and courage to resist sin and to reject the lies and de-ceits of our enemy Satan. God wants us to “fight the good fight of the faith” (1 Tim. 6:12) with the power and strength which comes from the Holy Spirit. Do you rely on the Lord for your strength and help?
"Lord, your word is life and joy for me. Fill me with your Holy Spirit that I may have the strength and courage to embrace your will in all things and to renounce whatever is contrary to it.”
Now, think and reflect: How do we put the teachings of Jesus into ac on during this Lent?
I N I C I A N D O N U E S T R O V IA JE CUARESMAL . . .

Forgiveness in the Catholic Tradi on isn’t “forge ng what happened”, nor is it simply relief from guilt or punishment. It is a means of finding a release from the prison in which the abor on has enslaved one.

L of 40 days which comes before Easter in the Chris an calendar. Beginning on Ash Wednesday, Lent is a season of reflec on and prepara on before the
celebra ons of Easter. By observing the 40 days of Lent, Chris-ans replicate Jesus Christ's sacrifice and withdrawal into the
desert for 40 days. Lent is marked by fas ng, both from food and fes vi es.
40 in the scriptures: x In Genesis, the flood which destroyed the earth was brought about by 40 days and nights of rain.
x The Hebrews spent 40 years in the wilderness before reaching the land promised to them by God.
x Moses fasted for 40 days before receiving the ten com-mandments on Mount Sinai.
x Jesus spent 40 days fas ng in the wilderness in prepara on for his ministry.
T : is the symbolic colour used in the churches throughout Lent. It is used for two reasons: firstly because it is associated with mourning and so an -
cipates the pain and suffering of the crucifixion, and secondly because purple is the colour associated with royalty, and cele-brates Christ's resurrec on and sovereignty.
