Reflection on Today’s Readings:

Ministry gathers us and makes us a faith family...

First Sunday of Advent - We are the servants of God, each with his or her own task. We will be judged good stewards if, at His coming, He finds us ready and conscientiously

pursuing the tasks to which we have been called.

Next Week - Celebrating Our Faith Sat., Dec. 3rd & Sun., Dec. 4th - Second Sunday of Advent

We encourage all to read and reflect on the Biblical passages that will be proclaimed at all Masses next Sunday: Reading 1 Reading 2 Gospel: Is 40:1-5, 9-11 (5B) 2 Pt 3:8-14 Mk 1:1-8

^ Ì The Family Visitation Ministry offers spiritual support to those in need. Please call Sr. Teresita at 310-216-2001, or call the Rectory Office at 310- 670-2243, x42.

FOCUS: Let our voices proclaim God’s glory - As we enter into Advent and prepare for Christ’s return, we do so with new texts for Mass. Today we begin using the new translation of the Roman Missal. But these new Mass texts are more about continuity than change, more about Tradition than translation. Let us see these changes as an opportunity to pray with even greater fervor. LITURGY OF THE WORD: The prophet Isaiah calls God Father, and asks Him to return for the sake of your servants. In the second reading, Paul reminds the Corinthians that the grace of God will keep them steadfast until Christ’s return. In the Gospel, Jesus reminds His disciples to be watchful and alert, for they do not know the hour when the Master will return.

LORD HEAR OUR PRAYER … For those who are ill, and those in need of our prayers … Please let us know about the condition of those we’re praying for. We’ll keep/remove their name(s) as requested, after the first few weeks.

Ë To receive Holy Communion (for those who are sick, hospitalized, or home bound) please call Gloria Bowen, 310.670.5971, Eucharistic Minister to the Sick. To have the name(s) included in our prayers, call the Parish Office at 310-670-2243.

Dear Parishioners, Happy Advent! As we begin the new Liturgical year of grace 2012 and once again begin recalling

the mysteries of our salvation, we also start a new chapter in the linguistic expression of our prayer together. The revision of the Roman Missal invites us to listen more carefully to the words as we lift our hearts and minds to God in preparation for the Lord’s coming. This afternoon at 4:30 pm, you are all invited for a simple supper as we bless Advent wreaths for our homes and join in fellowship with members of our faith community. Jesus calls us all to be one. He dwells in our hearts, and fills us with grace as we anticipate with renewed hearts the fullness of His Kingdom. Maranatha! Come Lord Jesus! Devotedly yours, Fr. Gabe

Be watchful! Be alert! You do not know when the time will come. - Mark 13:33

Ministry sends us beyond the parish… FACT OF LIFE Embryonic-Stem-Cell Project Abandoned The company doing the first government-approved test of embryonic stem cell therapy is discontinuing

further stem cell work. . . . Geron Corp., a pioneer in stem cell research that has been testing a spinal cord injury treatment, said late Monday that it’s halting development of its stem cell programs to conserve funds. . . . In a statement, the company said the decision “was made after a strategic review of the costs.” . . . Said pro-life commentator, Wesley J. Smith, “Geron Corporation was the big hope for embryonic-stem-cell research. After years of promises, its first-ever human trial using an embryonic-stem-cell-derived product for acute spinal-cord injury made huge headlines internationally. . . This is an atom bomb of a story that will have a serious effect on the entire regenerative medical sector. And it should embarrass the critics of President Bush; the California Institute for regenerative Medicine, which bragged about its part in funding a scientist involved in the research; and, perhaps most of all, the fawning media that have acted as press agent for the field generally.” (November 14, 2011 Associated Press and National Review Online). Prayer for Life: Heavenly Father, we thank you for caring about each of us so deeply. Your loving hand also rests on every child today carried in its mother's womb. May they be born into this world so they may know your endless love. We ask this through Jesus Christ our Lord, Amen.

Las Posadas, Dec. 18th, from 4 to 6:30 pm.

~A Community Celebration of Jesus’ Birth ~

Don’t Miss It! Las Posadas is a traditional Hispanic Festival

which re-enacts Mary and Joseph’s journey in search of an inn. It was originated in Andalusia, Spain, in the early 1500’s. This Christmas celebration is a contempo-rary Roman Catholic adaptation of a tradition attributed to St. John of the Cross. This is a beautiful opportunity to experience what Mary and Joseph may have felt as doors were closed in their faces, rejected and then experiencing the joy of hospitality. Come share housing, food, and creating community in breaking bread together. We welcome you to join us, bringing your neighbors, friends, families, and relatives to this wonderful celebration of Prayers, Songs, Tamales, Churros, Mariachis and Folklorico. All those interested in working on Las Posadas, please join us! Questions? Contact Suzette or Aleida @ 310-670-2243.

Ministry in Community …

Stewardship is a way of Life for St. Anastasia Church

Always Keep an Up-to-Date Photo of your Child - Picture this: A good photo could save a child’s life. One of the most important tools for law enforcement in the case of a missing child is an

up-to-date (take a new one every six months), good-quality photograph. The photograph should be a recent head-and-shoulders color photograph of the child in which the face is clearly seen. It should be of school-portrait quality, and the background should be plain or solid so it does not distract from the subject. When possible, the photograph should be in a digitized form and available on a compact disk (CD), as opposed to just a hard copy. This minimizes the time necessa-ry to scan, resize, and make color corrections before dissemi-nating it to law enforcement. The photograph should have space for accurate, narrative description useful to identify the child, such as name, nickname, height, weight, sex, age, eye color, identifying marks, glasses, and braces. For more infor-mation, please visit: www.missingkids.com. For particular help, you may call Assistance Ministry at (213) 637-7650.

Parish Ball and Silent Auction Donations! Once again, St. A’s Catholic school is sponsoring the Parish Ball and Silent Auction in support of our children. The event will be held on March 10, 2012 at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Redondo Beach. We are asking our local and neighboring businesses and families to support our school by donating an item or service to the Silent Auction or becoming an Event Sponsor of our program. If you know of any businesses, local service providers, friends or family that may want to donate to our fundraising event, please contact Jackie Aguilera at 310.722.9549, or at [email protected] and we will reach out to them

directly. This is a great way for local businesses, neighbors and friends to market their services to our community families while contributing to a worthy cause. No contribution is too small!

Living Faith for Kids… “Yet, O Lord, you are our father; we are the clay and you the potter: we are all the work of your hands. Isaiah 64:7

Formed from the earth itself; Adam and Eve, as the Bible tells us, were the work of God’s hands, as we all are. Given life in the image and likeness of God, we share the life of God through the Sacrament of Baptism. But that is only the beginning: God shapes us throughout our life of faith as we open our hearts to his saving action. Advent begins today, and Christmas is a full four weeks away. How will God shape you this Advent? Give yourself freely to the work of the Potter, and may your Christmas be filled with joy.
