Pastor’s Letter November 30/December 1 Dear Parish Family,
At the beginning of Advent our parish celebrates a service called Lessons and Carols. This year the
service will be on next Sunday afternoon, December 8, at 2:30PM The lessons are readings from the
bible that describe the promise of God to send a messiah, who is Jesus. The readings begin with the
creation and fall of human beings, continue with the redemption promised through the prophets, and
bring us to the fulfillment of the promise in the Annunciation, the birth of Jesus, and the visit of the
shepherds and Magi. The carols of course are Advent and Christmas carols — those most loved songs
that we sing together each year.
The tradition of a Festival of Lessons and Carols goes
back to 1880 when a certain Bishop Edward White, the
Bishop of Truro in England, was concerned that people
had lost their religious faith and that Christmas had
become too secular. He felt that Christmas was little
more than an opportunity to revel in pub singing, and that the true meaning of this great feast had
become lost. A creative man, he invited the revelers to come sing in church, and attached the lessons of
the bible to the songs they loved. The method worked. On Christmas eve the cathedral was filled with
more than 400 people who came two hours early to midnight mass to sing their hearts out. In between
the carols, they heard the message of the true meaning of Christmas.
There is no doubt that Christmas carols are powerful. Many of us can sing carols that were taught to us
by our parents. In my family our favorite was Silent Night and I have very clear memories of learning it
in our home. It is hard to sing Silent Night without thinking of the night Christ was born and feeling the
peace his coming brings. In our Religious Education program we are now holding our second Faith in
Action week of the year and asking all our students to learn and to sing a Christmas carol with their
families.
Singing carols together and listening to the lessons behind them are a wonderful way to celebrate the
Advent season. I hope you will join us next Sunday for our festival of Lessons and Carols. I hope you
will join in the singing. And if one of our Religious Ed students asks you about your favorite
Christmas carol, maybe you will sing it along with them.
Sincerely yours in Christ!
Rev. Michael A. Vetrano, Pastor

16th Annual Festival of Lessons & Carols
Our 16th Annual Festival of Lessons
& Carols will take place this year on
December 8th at 2:30 PM in the Church. All are welcome to attend this
beautiful Advent event.
Lessons and Carols is a traditional Advent Service that began in King’s College, Cambridge, England in 1918. This historic service includes Old and New Testament readings anticipating the birth of our Savior, followed by the singing of a carol appropriate for that reading. Our program will consist of nine readings (lessons) and songs (carols).

Faith in Action #2 – O Come, All Ye Faithful
Silent Night, Joy to the World, Away in a
Manger, O Holy Night, We Three Kings –
Christmas carols bring us into the spirit of
Christmas and remind us that peace is the
gift that Jesus came to bring to our world.
Carols tell the Christmas story in ways that
are beautiful and profound.
For our next Faith in Action activity, we are asking our religious
education students to learn a Christmas carol and sing it with their
family, neighbors, or friends. We are asking moms and dads,
grandmas and grandpas, aunts and uncles, cousins and friends, to
share their love of these Christmas carols and teach a carol or two
to our students. Bring out your guitar or violin. Use the internet
and have karaoke carols. Whoever sings, they say, prays twice.
The Faith in Action activities can be found on our parish website,
under Religious Education. Pass along this wonderful tradition.
Thank you from Knights of Columbus
K. of C. Council 1967 wishes to thank all the parishioners and

Spanish and Polish, with the proceeds used to support the various religious activities of both
parishes and our local Catholic School, Our Lady of the Hamptons. Cards will no longer be sold at
the church doors before and after masses, but if anyone is still interested, please feel free to contact
Jim McKenna at 631-283-4986.

We remember those parishioners who passed away since our last All Souls Day
The souls of the just are in the hands of God
BOOK OF REMEMBRANCE November is the Month of the Holy Souls. Our church has the custom of giving a place of
honor to a book in which parishioners write the names of their deceased. We recall and pray for
our beloved dead, trusting in God's eternal love and mercy to welcome them into the glory of
heaven. We invite you to share this time of remembrance by writing in the book the names of those friends and loved ones
who have fallen asleep in Christ. The book will be conveniently located in front of the Blessed Mother.
Eucharistic Adoration Become an Anchor of Prayer for Family Life
Each week our parish will have an hour of Eucharistic Adoration following the noon mass on Fridays. We would like to dedicate this hour as a time of contemplation and reflection to pray especially for our families. For strength in family life, for the return of family members to the church, for healing and reconciliation within families that are hurting.

It is the hour now for you to awake from sleep. In Sunday’s readings, Jesus simply warns, “Stay awake.” St. Paul’s variation in his letter to the
Romans suggests that people have been sleeping, so they need to wake up. Either way, the message
is pretty clear: We need to be alert to what’s happening around us. As we begin a new liturgical year
with this First Sunday of Advent, there is so much we should be attending to. People all around us,
maybe including us, are suffering from conflicts and war, from environmental disasters, from a lack
of affordable health care or housing, from injustices small and large. Are we walking around in a
state of ignorance or denial, or are we taking to heart the realities that cry out to us for help? This
Advent let our preparations include preparations for the coming of Christ not only as an infant, but
also as the promise of peace and justice which we share as co-creators with him.
Reconciliation for Christmas
Receiving the sacrament of reconciliation is a great way to prepare
spiritually for Christmas. In addition to our regular Saturday times
we will celebrate reconciliation on Monday, December 16th, after
the 12 noon mass and from 3 PM to 7:00 PM in our church.
