SCRIPTURE FOR DECEMBER 01 FIRST READING Isaiah 2:1–5 (1A) On that day, “they shall beat their swords into plowshares and their spears into pruning hooks” prophesied Isaiah. “One na-tion shall not raise the sword against another.” He went on: “Come, let us walk in the light of the Lord.”

RESPONSORIAL PSALM Psalm 122:1–2,3–4,4–5,6–7, 8–9 Let us go rejoicing to the house of the Lord.

SECOND READING Romans 13:11–14 Paul urged the Romans: “It is the hour now for you to awake from sleep. For our salvation is nearer now than when we first believed.” Let us put on the “armor of light. Put on the Lord Jesus Christ.”

GOSPEL ACCLAMATION cf. Psalm 85:8 Show us Lord your love; and grant us your salvation.

DECEMBER 1 ~ FIRST SUNDAY OF ADVENT

The message is clear on this first Sunday of Advent: “Walk in the light of the Lord”; “Stay awake…”; “You must be prepared…”; “Put on the Lord Jesus Christ.” The Church gives us this holy season as a time for us to re-order our lives and our priorities. While our culture will try to distract us from the im-portance of Christ’s birth, take a few minutes each day in prayer to extend a personal invitation to Jesus to come into your life. Your prayer will produce grat-itude and your gratitude will foster hope in the Lord.

Thank you!

FROM FATHER JOHN

On this weekend we begin the Holy Season of Ad-vent, a time of grace and spiritual preparation to celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ at Christmas. This is what we usually think of during Advent. In reality this season celebrates several comings of Christ. He comes in history, in mystery, and in majesty. Jesus Christ came in history and was born in Bethlehem. Jesus Christ will come in maj-esty at the end of the world to judge the living and the dead and to present His Kingdom to God the Father. In the intervening time Jesus Christ comes in mystery. He is present in the Eucharist and all the sacraments. He comes to us as Mother Teresa reminded us so often “in the distressing disguise of the poor”. He is present in His Word in Sacred Scripture. He is present in the Church community especially when we gather in worship. He is pre-sent in the ordained priesthood. Let this Advent be a time to strengthen and renew our faith. If Christ-mas is to be authentic for us, know that He desires to be born anew in our hearts and lives. We need to open ourselves to His coming. During Advent be sure to pray, worship, help the poor, read the Word of God. Also make plans now as to when you and your family will get to confession and also decide now on what Mass you will participate in for Christmas. Center the Advent season on the Lord. Father John

ADVENT CATHOLIC MASS ACCORDING TO ANGLICAN USAGE

On Wednesday evening, December 4, Fr. Jurgin Liias will return to our parish to celebrate a 7:00p.m. Mass according to Anglican Usage. Fr. Jurgin was well received during our recent Fall Lecture Series and people were enthused about having him return to celebrate Mass. Fr. Jurgin will also introduce the Mass with a brief teach-ing. Come and make this an important aspect of your Advent observance.

ADVENT CONFESSIONS Recognize the importance of receiving the Sacra-ment of Reconciliation in Preparation for Christ-mas. Do so either here at St. Eulalia Parish or in a neighboring parish. In addition to our regular time for confession on Saturday afternoons from 3:00p.m. to 3:40p.m., there will be additional op-portunities during Advent. On Wednesday even-ing, December 11, at 7:00p.m. there will be an Advent Penance Service with several priests pre-sent for confession. St. Mary Parish will join us for this event. Confessions will be heard on Mon-

day, December 23, from 6:30p.m. to 8:00p.m. and on Tuesday morning, December 24, from after the 9:00a.m. Mass until Noon.

FEAST OF THE IMMACULATE CONCEPTION While this is a holy day but not of obligation, we en-courage you to celebrate the Feast by participating at Mass at 9:00AM which will be preceded by Sung Morning Prayer at 8:30AM or at 7:00PM on Monday, December 09 honoring the Feast.

ADVENT MORNING PRAYER

Join your fellow parishioners at Advent Morning Prayer which will be held on Wednesday, Decem-ber 04 at 9:00AM.

BAMBINELLI SUNDAY

Bambinelli* Sunday (*Italian meaning: Baby Jesus) or “Baby Jesus Sunday” will be celebrated at St. Eu-lalia Parish on the weekend of December 14/15. Pope John Paul II instituted this Advent custom; in-viting children and adults to bring to St. Peter’s Square for a blessing, the small statue of the Christ Child from their nativity sets.

At all Masses on December 14/15, there will be a blessing of the Baby Jesus. All are invited to bring a statue of the Christ Child. If you do not have a Christmas Nativity in your home, now would be the opportune time to invest in one. If you are parents of children and/or teens, this would be a visible re-minder for your family to keep Christ in Christmas.

GUEST SPEAKER

On Tuesday December 10 at 7:30PM in the church, Professor Robert Kiely will discuss, and read from his new book, “Fair Jesus: The Gospels According to Italian Painters: 1300-1650.” With chapters on ”The Teacher,” “The Messiah,” “The Passion,” and “Resurrection,” the text takes major moments from the Gospels and shows how the great Italian painters interpreted them, showing Christ as he revealed both his human and divine character. The book has 100 pictures and would make a great Christmas present. Copies will be available for pur-chase at the event.

BEST ADVENT EVER

If you would like to receive a free email each day during Advent from Dynamic Catholic with an inspi-rational message, go to Dynamiccatholic.com and sign up for "Best Advent Ever". What better way to prepare for the coming of our Savior on Christmas than to ponder an inspirational message each day during Advent?

BREAKING BREAD HYMNAL

In addition to our Gather Hymnal you will notice a new hymnal in the pews this weekend. The new Breaking Bread hymnal has been purchased to have Mass settings and respons-es according to the 2011 translation of the Mass and to have contemporary song selections. This will reduce the need for worship aids at some of our liturgies.

THE UNBROKEN WORD…………..……...….…..by Michael J. Cunningham Thanksgiving. This wonderful time of the year where we get to meet with all the relatives we love. (And some perhaps less so ) It is a time for community, sharing, renewed relationships, understanding and most of all gratitude.

So much of Thanksgiving is focused on the second part of the word. The giving part. Retailers en-courage giving like an Old Testament prelude to the coming of Christ at Christmas. When I first moved the USA, I could not believe Santa was visible so early in the season. It is the season of selling as much as it is of giving.

I have nothing against the giving part, it is often required for sharing and showing how we care for others; however, the first part of the word is sometimes less well serviced by us. The “thanks” part is to which I refer.

For the Thanks part to work, we need to have a position of gratitude. Gratitude is something which has to be in place for a true Thanksgiving to be in place. For it is in this embodied surrender and thankfulness to God that real gratitude is located. Gratitude which is an explosive combination of God’s grace-filled love captured in a loving embrace which is palpable, something we can feel. As real as the hug of our nieces, children, and grandchildren at Thanksgiving dinner.

Gratitude requires more than a simple “thanks” to God. It requires a dedicated celebration of what we have been blessed with and shared with those around us if we are lucky enough to have them near during this wonderful time.

It is a time to be grateful for the simple things, a roof over our heads, food on the table, relationships, friends, community, the ability to be able to help others and the love of God which surrounds us al-ways.

Have a blessed Thanksgiving! But more than that embrace gratitude for the gift it is, and our God who provides us with the ability to hold it entirely in his love.

The Cunningham family grandchildren – Summer 2019 – How blessed are we?
