First Sunday in Lent; March 1, 2020 Genesis 2:15-17 or 3:1-7; Psalm 32; Romans 5:12-19; Matthew 4:1-11 Lent began February 26 th on the day called Ash Wednesday. Lent comes from Latin, which means lengthening of daylight that occurs as spring appears. Historically, Lent was established by the church c.325AD at the Council of Nicea (held in modern day Turkey) and eventually became the 40-day time period to prepare candidates for baptism. It ends with the celebration the resurrection of Christ on Easter Sunday morning. Purple is the seasonal color. Lent is an invitation to reflect on our mortality. This is symbolized by the placing of ashes (the burnt palms from the previous Palm Sunday) on the forehead of the believer: “Dust thou art and to dust thou shalt return.Genesis 2:7. Traditionally, Christians use this time, following the example of Jesus, for self-reflection and sacrifice; for example, making the choice to give upsome- thing, with the intent of gaining spiritual maturity that forms a new healthy life- style practice. This year Rev. Moore has asked the congregation to compose a gratitude journal. We are encouraged to write daily, something for which we are grateful. I propose that the benefits will be two-fold. First, you will get in touch with your mortality that always comes with spiritual practices: The strengths and weaknesses of keeping-to-the-task. Please dont give up if you miss some days. Secondly, in time you will reap the benefits of gratitude, starting with fewer physical aches and pains and a reduction of toxic emotions such as frustration and regret. Be glad in the LORD and rejoice, O righteous, and shout for joy, all you upright in heart.Psalm 32:11 Rev. The Mission of the Mount Carmel Baptist Church

is to teach, preach and interpret the Gospel of

Jesus Christ. Through the Power of The Holy

Spirit, we will strive to convert the lost and build

up the Body of Christ. We will further endeavor

to eradicate miseducation, prejudices, and all

forms of discrimination and their effects.

In order to accomplish this as a community of

faith, we must collectively strive to holistically

meet the spiritual, physical, emotional, social

and economic needs of our membership and

community. “Until the kingdoms of this world

become the Kingdom of Our Lord”, and Savior

Jesus Christ... “And He shall reign forever and

ever.”

Amen
