Second Sunday of Lent St. Ann Catholic Church February 25, 2018

Dear Friends,

On this Second Sun-day of Lent, the Church places before us the example of Abraham's faith and trust in God’s Provi-dence. He had prom-ised many descendants to Abraham, and yet asks him to sacrifice his only son. Imagine the incredible amount of faith this required on Abraham’s part. It is akin to Mary’s trust in God’s plan for her to bear a Son, even though she had made a promise to Him of perpetual virginity. Sometimes what God wants of us doesn’t seem to make sense - and yet, when we finally see what He had in mind, it is much greater than we could have imagined.

As Abraham walked up the mountain to sacrifice his son, he almost certain-ly didn’t know why God was asking him to do this. Perhaps it seems brutal to us - God asking a man to kill another man. But what God wanted to do through Abraham was:

1. Test his faith - As mentioned above, consider the humility and

trust needed to abandon his own hesitation in the face of such a seemingly terrible request. He knew that God had something planned, he just didn’t know what.

2. Foreshadow how much God the Father was willing to sacrifice for us when He sent Christ to die for us.

3. Signal the end of human sacrifice - human sacrifice was never a part of the Israelite community, but it was present in the world at that time in other cultures. Abraham’s interrupted sacrifice was one of the most significant events in all of salvation history, and God staying the hand of Abraham was seen as a definitive statement about the end of violent sacrifice.

May we be thankful every day for the great love shown by God toward us in giving His Son for our salvation.

In Christ,

Fr Marotti

p.s. Since the Gospel mentioned the sacrifice of Abraham, I’m definitely using the Roman Canon (longer Eucharistic prayer). DEAL WITH IT ;)

QUESTION: I have noticed many changes going on in the church. Can you give an overview of your plans?

ANSWER:The current changes in the church include removal of the stained glass windows in the back of the church, as well as the re-painting of the back sanctuary wall. The reason for the removal of the stained glass is that the soon-to-be installed pipe organ would block the majority of it, so I decided to remove it so that it can be viewed fully in another place (which we have not yet determined). The reason for the repainting of the sanctuary wall was both to cover up imperfections in the wall and to brighten up the space which will be significantly darker once the pipe organ is installed (towards the end of February), as it will block much of the back window. We hope to remedy this change of brightness in the future with lighting changes and further painting, window modifications, etc.

We have also installed a beautiful oak gothic-style niche to house our beautiful statue of St. Ann by the devotional candles. This piece is over 100 years old and was an incredibly cheap discovery! Many thanks to Ryan Anthony for making the long trek to pick it up in Missouri. There will be more modifications to our sanctuary space in the near future - some of which will be at no cost to the parish. All of these changes have the goal of beautifying our sacred space. Stay tuned for more updates!

FEB 28: Fr. will look at the reality of heaven. He will explore God’s promise of eternal life and the perfection that we can look forward to experiencing in the life to come. Often referred to as the reason for our hope, heaven may be one of our most inspiring of Catholic beliefs.

MARCH 7: Fr. will focus on the Vision of God and the preparations necessary to enter into the promise of eternal life. All things necessary for salvation have been revealed to us. This talk will help us to examine those necessities.

MARCH 14: We will be inviting several priests throughout the diocese to be part of our Lenten Penance Service. Be sure to plan to attend the Penance service and receive the grace and blessings of our Lord’s forgiveness during the Lenten season.

MARCH 21: Fr. will conclude this series with a discussion of the Shroud of Turin, the burial cloths believed to have been used by those who placed Jesus in the tomb. The history and the scientific analysis of the Shroud is compelling and inspiring.
