Dear Fellow CFA-DFW members,
Happy New Year! All too quickly it
seems, we are already halfway
through our 2017-18 fiscal year. Your
CFA-DFW board and tireless
committee volunteers have dedicated
countless hours to bringing you a full
slate of engaging events, compelling
content and professional networking
and growth opportunities. Please join
me in thanking them for everything
they have accomplished so far this
year.
I’m pleased to share that our society
continues to grow by leaps and
bounds. Now with over 1,360
members, our CFA Society of DFW
(“CFA-DFW”) is the 9th largest CFA
society in the United States and
22nd largest globally. We continue to
celebrate new growth as well and
were so pleased to welcome and
award the CFA charter to 83 new
charterholders last month at our
Charterholder Ceremony.
I want to particularly thank our
Programs committee, chaired by Kim
Abmeyer, for the richly diverse
calendar of educational and social
events we are enjoying. Many thanks
also to all our members who have
come out and joined one or more
events already this year. It is truly your
presence and participation at each
and every event that makes our
society great!
Looking out on the calendar, please
join us in the weeks ahead for some of
our society’s largest and most-
anticipated events of the year. In
February, our annual Forecast Dinner
will be held at the Belo Mansion on
Thursday Feb. 22, where we will hear
the outlooks of Steven Romick,
Elizabeth Lilly, and Brian Wesbury. The
following day on Feb 23rd we will host
the annual Symposium of CFA
Societies Texas at the George Bush
Presidential Center. This all-day event
will feature perspectives and thought
leadership from industry and
institutional leaders including Robert
Kaplan, Bob Doll, Jeffrey Sherman, Ken
Hersh, Jim Hille, Ryan Bailey, CFA
Institute leaders Bjorn Forfang, Robert
Jenkins and Leah Bennett, and many
more.
Tickets are available to both these
February events individually, but I
really do recommend the attractive
combo package if you can make it
both days! Many thanks to all the
sponsors who have already supported
our efforts to bring these events to
you – and many, MANY thanks go to
Luther King Capital Management, our
CFA-DFW Strategic Advisory Board
leader and longtime society
champion, for their generous Title
sponsorship of both these events.
Looking further ahead in the spring,
please continue to watch your e-mails
for more terrific upcoming events as

programs, continued fun and
networking at our social events, and
our Annual Society Meeting.
Your board and volunteers are
focused on finishing the year strong,
and we are also looking forward to
the start of next fiscal year, July 1st. As
you attend events, please also
consider getting involved in CFA-DFW
as a volunteer on one of our
committees. And, if you are already
serving on a committee, please
consider deepening your
volunteership by serving on the CFA-
DFW board. If you have any questions
about getting more involved as a CFA
-DFW volunteer, please feel free to
reach out to me and other board
committee chairs for more
information.
Within this newsletter you will find our
society’s mission statement, as well as
the mission statement of CFA Institute.
It’s worthwhile to read through them
both from time to time. These guide
our strategic decision making and
should be in line with your
expectations as a member. We strive
for CFA-DFW to be a voice of
leadership in education, professional
excellence and ethics for our industry
and investment community. We are
aligned with CFA Institute in
continuing to promote and carry out
the standards of the CFA designation
in a meaningful and impactful way.
We are well on our way into an
ambitious 2018. Please continue to
read your society e-mails and check
the calendar for newly scheduled
events. As one of the most vibrant and
innovative CFA societies in the world,
we are dedicated to continuing to
grow and improve our organization
and the value we provide you as a
CFA-DFW member and CFA
charterholder. If you have suggestions,
comments or concerns please let us
know by e-mailing us at
I look forward to seeing you at
upcoming events and wish you and
your families a healthy and
prosperous 2018.

Women in Investment Management
Women in Investment Management (WIM) Begins 2018 with “AM I ENOUGH?”
What is WIM? The CFA Institute Women in Investment Management initiative is focused on improving
investor outcomes by encouraging diversity in the investment management profession globally.
CFA/DFW has joined the grassroots efforts of CFA member societies worldwide to close the gender gap
within the investment management profession. Our programs are designed to promote career
advancement, leadership, and relevant strategies for each stage of a woman’s investment career.
The first WIM program of the new year tackles an
issue that many women in all stages of their careers
can relate to. Professional women have a great
reputation and are respected by colleagues…yet
deep down inside some have that feeling that they
are an imposter. Their outer façade is in conflict with
that inner voice that sometime asks "Am I ENOUGH?"
Judy Hoberman, best-selling author and gender
expert will lead a discussion on Wednesday, January
31, 2018 to discuss how women ARE enough by:
• Discovering how one's "story" defines the person
• Defining what confidence is and when someone feels the most confident
• Learning the 5 "rules" to incorporate into daily life that will crumble the imposter syndrome
Please make plans to join us and check back for more WIM events!

“Our profession has a diversity problem. If we
are to change, we must also change our

Introducing the Charterholders Under 40 group!
9
CFA DFW invites all young professionals to get more involved in the society. To emphasize our
commitment to this segment, we have created the Charterholders Under 40 Group and we welcome all
Charterholders, aspiring Charterholders and associates that fit the parameter to join us at upcoming
events tailored specifically to you. We will begin by hosting four events this year with content relative to
younger Charterholders and CFA Candidates. Some ideas to follow are a Happy Hour Series this summer,
“A Day in the Life of ___” lunch events, and programs related to soft skills and other tools to foster your
success in the future of finance. We believe the event on February 16th with Sameer Somal and his
presentation, “The New Networking: Building Relationship Capital” is a great way to get started; please
see the following page for details and RSVP today!
Charterholders Under 40 Mission Statement:
To promote and foster the development and community of our younger Charterholders, aspiring Charterholders, and affiliates, providing them content and the tools to lead the investment
profession ethically, and uphold it to the highest standard set forth by the CFA Institute.
This is a topic that’s beneficial to professionals of all ages, and we want to extend a special invitation to
our “Charterholders Under 40” group.
The New Networking: Building Relationship Capital
The Digital Revolution is accelerating our access to knowledge and revolutionizing how we communicate.
Finance is grounded on quantifiable metrics and knowledge gained through the rigors of the CFA
program. While a technical framework is required and fundamental to a successful career in finance, we
overlook the importance of what we can only measure qualitatively, including networking. Success in life
is a function of our interpersonal relationships.
Networking is a learned skill and does not require the personality of an extrovert. A memorable
introductory conversation and exchange of business cards will increase relationship capital after applying
a process for patient and purposeful follow-up. Creating a network of trusted friends and colleagues, who
will provide information, introductions, mentoring and partnership, will expand your personal and
professional opportunity set. Results follow planning, practice, and commitment.
An acute understanding of the intangibles or ‘soft skills’ is often required for nurturing new contact and
developing a life-long friendship. While these intangible skills are taught and studied, their practice
underpins the success of our most revered business, political, and humanitarian leaders in recent history.
How does one quantify trust, communication, and emotional intelligence? The interdependence of our
global economy places a premium on authenticity and relationships.
Sameer Somal is the CFO at Blue Ocean Global Technology and Blue Ocean Global
Wealth. Prior to co-founding Blue Ocean Global Wealth, he was a Senior Investment
Analyst at The Bank of Nova Scotia and a Financial Advisor and Intermediary at
Morgan Stanley and Merrill Lynch & Co.
Sameer is also a CFA Charterholder, a CFP® professional, and a Chartered
Alternative Investment AnalystSM
. Sameer serves on the Financial Planning
Association (FPA) National Diversity Committee and the Board of Directors of the
Philadelphia/Tri-State FPA. A senior financial services leader on industry
roundtable and panel discussions, Sameer serves on CFP Board’s Council on
Education and is a Women’s Initiative (WIN) Advocate. He is an active member
at CFA Institute, serves on the Advisory Executive Council of the Women
Economic Forum (WEF), and is a Board Advisor at the iPlan Education Institute in
New Delhi, India. A member of the Speakers’ Series at the Johns Hopkins
University Carey School of Business, Sameer is subject matter expert witness and a
frequent speaker on the digital revolution, reputation management, succession
planning, technology, diversity, financial planning, entrepreneurship, and leadership.
In May of 2017, he was named an Iconic Leader Creating a Better World for All by the
All Ladies League & Women Economic Forum.

CFA DFW Mentorship Program
This year, our mentor program had 40
participants (20 mentors and 20 mentees)
and officially kicked off with a well-attended
breakfast get-together in November. This year,
we were honored to have Ryan Bailey, CFA and
Director of Investments at Children's Health share his
own experience as both a mentor and mentee and
forward his inspiring words to each participant. This
program is a great opportunity for established investment
management professionals to give back and for aspiring
investment management professionals to learn from industry
leaders. We have plans to organize at least one more event in late
Spring. For questions or interest in participating next year, please contact
Paul Olschwanger or Joe Martinez.

Southwest U.S. Research Challenge
In 2006, the CFA Society of Dallas/Fort Worth and the CFA Society of
Houston teamed up to launch an exciting new initiative, the Investment
Research Challenge-Texas. In the initial year of the Challenge, student
teams from Rice, Texas A&M, TCU and SMU competed with each other on
analyzing, writing, and presenting a report recommending a “Buy”, “Sell”, or
“Hold” position on a publicly traded company. The societies assisted in
providing education tools; the goal being to provide a value-added real-
world application for these students. The teams were then assigned the
company (i.e. the target company) to analyze with access to the CEO or
CFO. Teams were given a Template to follow in completing their written
analysis/report. All four Texas societies, Austin, Dallas-Fort Worth, Houston
and San Antonio provided Faculty Advisors and Industry Mentors for the
teams, Graders for the written reports or Judges for the final presentations
by the teams. Finalist teams competed before an oral panel made up of
leaders in our investment community at the Texas Investment Portfolio
Symposium (TIPS). The winning team went on to compete regionally
against other winners hosted by CFA Institute in New York City.
Twelve years later, we have 27 university teams across three states (LA, OK,
TX) competing. Because six societies participate, we have renamed the
competition, the “Southwest U.S. Research Challenge”. As such we are the
largest Challenge in the Americas region and the second largest globally.
The Target Company for this year is Andeavor (ANDV) headquartered in
San Antonio. Management presented to the teams at their headquarters
just prior to the holidays. For teams outside the area, there was a link to
the presentation and an opportunity for all teams to ask questions either in
person or via email.
On February 2nd, the teams will turn in their analysis/reports and the top 10
graded reports will go on to compete in the oral Finals held in conjunction
with TIPS (Texas Investment Portfolio Symposium) on February 17, 2018 at
Southern Methodist University. The top two winning teams will go on to
represent our area at the Americas Regional Final in Boston in March
where teams from across the Canada, U.S., and Latin/South America will
compete.
The Southwest U.S. Research Challenge is managed and supported by CFA
Societies Texas (Austin, Dallas-Ft. Worth, Houston, and San Antonio) as well
as the CFA Society Louisiana and CFA Society Oklahoma. The Co-Chairs of
the Challenge wish to thank the 100 plus (volunteers from across all 6
societies for sharing their expertise and experience with the Challenge
teams. If you are interested in volunteering, please contact Co-Chairs,
