OVERVIEW OF FIRST PROGRAMS

FIRST is a family of programs that foster interest and passion in STEM careers through a progression of K-12 robotics competitions Starting in early elementary they allow the student to keep moving up to a new robotics challenge all the way through high school What makes FIRST unique is that mentors from industry work alongside the students to design build and program their robots

Below is the Michigan Progression of Programs which differs from the FIRST HQ progression

DESCRIPTION Two part focus 1 Build LEGOreg model with one moving part 2 Create a Show-Me poster (like Science Fair posters) to practice presentation skills at Expos

that encourage sharing learning from others celebrating achievements LEGO WeDo 20 reg kit option teaches beginning programming skills

AGE GROUP Kindergarten through 3rd grade

TEAM SIZE Team size limited to 6 multiple teams from a single schoolorganizaton encouraged

COST $265 for registration ($75) and starter set ($190) $25 for each expo event (at the door)

DESCRIPTION Three part focus 1 Create a fully autonomous LEGO Mindstorm robot and run missions 2 Research and present a project centered on a real-world theme 3 Learn and demonstrate the FLL Core Values

AGE GROUP Late elementary (starting in 4th grade ending at last grade in elementary school)

TEAM SIZE Maximum 10 students per team multiple teams from single schoolorganization welcome

COST $300 for field kit and team registration $485 for robot kit $75 per event- pay at door

journey through the engineering process

TEAM SIZE Up to 15 students per team Multiple teams from single schoolorganization welcome

COST $1575 for robot kit and registration $100 per event (one mandatory qualifier)
