First Presbyterian Church, Twin Falls Idaho
Worship in December December is a decidedly busy month for many of us, but in the midst of “checking our lists” and “finding out who is naughty and who is nice” worship may be the one thing that we can do to center ourselves and remember the reason why we are so busy in December: Jesus Christ. During this month of preparing for the birth of our Savior there will be several different opportunities and venues in which to worship the Lord our God and gather in His presence. On December 11th in our regular Sunday morning worship we will have the opportunity to collectively decorate and reflect on the meaning of the decorations for Christmas with a “Hanging of the Greens” service that will feature the young people of our congregation. Thanks to the leadership of our Christian Nurture elders we will reflect on why we hang greens, light candles, sing certain songs, and put trees in our homes and places of worship. On Wednesday, December 21st, at 7 p.m. in the chapel in building number two, we will once again offer a “Blue Christmas” service, in which we will sing “O Come, O Come, Emmanuel” several times because it is a song of people in darkness longing for God’s light. So too will we hear scripture and light candles in remembrance of God’s love at work in our life. This is a service of worship especially for those who have experienced loss of some kind or for whom December is a difficult time of year. On Saturday, December 24th at 5 p.m. we will gather for Christmas Eve worship in the sanctuary. The order of worship will be traditional with handbells, candle lighting and reflecting on the meaning of our Savior’s birth. Then on Sunday, December 25th we will gather for worship at 11 a.m. in the Fellowship Room for a come-as-you-are time of worship with lessons, carols and a Christmas story.
This is, indeed, a busy time of year, but I hope you will take advantage of the many different opportunities for worshipping the Lord our God in this midst of all of our other activities with family, friends, and coworkers.

Old Business
Phil shared an update on status of Acorn School’s use/renovation of FPC . This is still a proposal we are
considering. The provisional use permit about whether Acorn is allowed to change locations will be reviewed in October by Planning and Zoning. Session decided to share more
information with the congregation. A letter drafted by
Terry Nelson will be reviewed by Elders at the October
meeting and will go out to the congregation by mail.
Sabbatical – 2018 Phil is applying for Lilly and if he doesn’t get it, will do something related to the out-flow
from Futuring Task Force. A CAMP Funds proposal from Deacons/Mission to deal with
the $8000 in the CAMP treasury will be addressed in October. There are a number of responsibilities associated with
getting new members assimilated into the congregation. Though this is part of Christian Nurture, it is everyone’s
responsibility and we need to address a variety of needs. A series of new member classes are planned.

Psalm –65 “Thanksgiving for Earth’s Bounty”
Old Business:
The Futuring Task Force had their initial conversation with the
Session on questions that small groups will be considering.
The update on status of Acorn School’s use/renovation of FPC
included reaction to Sunday,
October 16th’s informational meeting with congregation. One
suggestion is the need to be clearer about what
the value or reason for this effort is. Terry Nelson moved that
we vote either yes to have the architect to
make up drawings and go to bid and proceed and a No is that we
should not proceed. Seconded by Shirley. A
yes would still mean 6-8 weeks are required for the bids to come
in and decide with financial information
more firmly in hand. Judy noted that this is not a new concept
to this congregation, as it is similar to past
decisions to allow a number of other groups to use our building.
The vote was unanimously YES to proceed.
Rene moved the disposal of remaining CAMP Funds of $8355
be divided equally between Deacons and
Mission. Seconded and passed. $5000 in designated funds is
remaining there to help with the program
cooking matters. In the future, anyone wishing to apply for
those funds can inquire with Bob Parkinson.
Continuing Education – we will resume next month along with
Confession and Pardon.
New Business:
New Business:
Terry Nelson talked about having a better handle on
projected future costs and the recent costs of the roof leak.
The architect looked at the proposal which would deal with
building 1 and felt it a good one. Terry described what is
included in that proposal. The total would be $56,000.00 for
the three areas needing attention. Terry moved we accept a
bid for $40,000 for building 1 and $16,200 for building #2.
Discussion was held on how this could be paid for with a
Boone and Painter loan. Money would not be paid until
2017. The vote was unanimous to go ahead so materials can
be ordered to have ready for spring repair to be done.
Scripture Reading: 2 Timothy 4:6-8, 16-18
Committee Reports:
Board of Deacons: They will have a minute for mission on
the Christmas project helping 15 families.
Building & Grounds: Terry Nelson reported that the elevator
inspection situation.

members suggested a 5th Sunday potluck for getting to know
others in the congregation better. This month Circle 5 will

helpful. Nametags will be available next Sunday. A bulletin
insert will explain it fully. New members will be again be
featured in the Trumpet. Poinsettias will again come from
FFA. Logos and the kids will decorate the church. The
Christmas Eve service will be at 5:00.

A Message from the Board of Deacons
The Deacon’s Christmas Project is well underway and we welcome your participation!
This year we will be assisting 16 families from the Magic Valley High School as well as three community agen-
cies: Salvation Army, Valley House and Voices Against Violence (formerly known as the Crisis Center of Magic
Valley).
The requested items from the Magic Valley High School families have been listed on tags on our Deacon’s Tree
in the Upper Narthex. Please select an ornament from the tree. Purchase the item listed on the tag, wrap it and
secure the tag on the gift. Please be sure to write your name and phone number by the number of the tag you have
selected on the list by the tree. Donations of non-perishable food (canned items, pastas, peanut butter, etc.) are
also needed for this project.
The three agencies we will be assisting in addition to the above were contacted to ask about specific items they
needed. They are as follows:
Salvation Army: canned/non perishable food, travel size and regular size shampoos and soaps for hygiene kits
and their on-site showers.
Valley House: canned food, toilet paper, paper towels, large bottles of shampoo and conditioner for their housing
units
Voices Against Violence (Women’s Crisis Center): they are in need of the following items for intake clothing
which means that the women are required to change into new clothing immediately upon entering the Center:
small/medium sizes of women’s socks, underwear, bras, t-shirts and sweat pants.
The items for the Salvation Army, Valley House and the Crisis Center should not be wrapped.
Please bring all gifts and other items to the church by Sunday December 11. Collection baskets are in the Lower
Narthex of the church.
The Deacon’s will be packing the Christmas boxes on Monday December 12 at 5:00 in the Fellowship Room. We
welcome the Congregation to join us for this event. Pizza will be served.
Many thanks to you all for your help with this very worthwhile local project. Any questions? Please contact me
or any Deacon for more information.

The Christmas Gift Tag Tree is located in the upper narthex. If you would like to donate a gift, please
select a tag (or tags), fill out the sign up sheet with your name, phone number and the tag number, purchase
the gift and wrap it, and return it to the church with the tag attached by December 11. Gifts may be placed
under the tree.

especially in need of canned meats, hearty soups, canned fruit, peanut butter, side dishes like instant
potatoes, rice, or mac and cheese, and cake, cookie, or brownie mixes. Food and gifts will be distributed to
16 families on December 13.
The Deacons will be packing the Christmas boxes on Monday evening, December 12 and welcome
your help. Many hands make light work so please join us in the Fellowship Room at 5:30 pm on December
