Prelude Arioso J.S. Bach/arr. Pirani Welcome

Introit Look who gathers at Christ’s table! Hear the stories that they bring. Some are weeping; some are laughing; some have songs they want to sing. Others ask why they’re invited, burdened by the wrongs they’ve done. Christ insists that all are welcome. There is room for everyone.

*Call to Worship Love the Lord your God, with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your strength, and with all your mind! Love your neighbor as yourself, with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your strength, and with all your mind! Do this and you will live! Let us worship God!

*Hymn 305 Come Sing, O Christian, in Joy!

*Invitation to Confession

*Prayer of Confession (silent confession) Holy God, we are your sons and daughters, descendants of the God most high, yet, we do not behave to honor you and our actions belittle the love you have for us. We do not defend the weak or those without fathers or mothers. We do not uphold the poor or the oppressed. We do not commit to efforts to rescue the weak and the needy; we sometimes deliver them into solitude and neglect. Rise up to judge us, O God. We prefer your merciful justice, than living with guilt and fear. Straighten our path, so that we can be guided as a mother or a father guides beloved children. Amen.

*Assurance of Forgiveness

*The Peace of Christ Since God has forgiven us in Christ, let us forgive one another. The peace of the Lord Jesus Christ be with you all. And also with you. Let us share the peace of Christ with one another.

FIRST PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH Oak Ridge, Tennessee

A Congregation of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.)

July 14, 2019 Fifteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time

*Sung Response (hymn 59) The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases; God’s mercies never come to an end. They are new every morning, new every morning; Great is your faithfulness, O Lord, great is your faithfulness

Time with the Children Peggy Terpstra Children are invited to remain for the rest of the service or go to First Steps.

First Reading Psalm 82

Anthem How Lovely and How Pleasant Burkhardt How lovely and how pleasant when people dwell in peace, and love is ever present to bind them each to each. As dew upon the mountain refreshes every flower, So love springs like a fountain for those who know its power. Like sweetest oil pervading this temple where we meet, So flows a joy unfading over those at Jesus’ feet.

Second Reading Luke 10:25-37

Sermon Revisiting a Familiar Parable Rosalyn McKeown-Ice

*Affirmation of Faith [from A Brief Statement of Faith of the PC(USA)] In life and in death we belong to God. Through the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit, we trust in the one triune God, the Holy One of Israel, whom alone we worship and serve. We trust in Jesus Christ, Fully human, fully God. Jesus proclaimed the reign of God: preaching good news to the poor and release to the captives, teaching by word and deed and blessing the children, healing the sick and binding up the broken-hearted, eating with outcasts, forgiving sinners, and calling all to repent and believe the gospel. Unjustly condemned for blasphemy and sedition, Jesus was crucified, suffering the depths of human pain and giving his life for the sins of the world. God raised this Jesus from the dead, vindicating his sinless life, breaking the power of sin and evil, delivering us from death to life eternal. Amen.

The Sacrament of Holy Communion

Invitation to the Lord’s Table

Hymn 530 One Bread, One Body

Great Prayer of Thanksgiving

The Lord be with you. And also with you. Lift up your hearts. We lift them up to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give our thanks and praise.

3

...we lift our voices and hearts in praise. . Therefore we praise you, joining our voices with the choirs of heaven and with all the faithful of every time and place who forever sing to the glory of your name: Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might, heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest.

Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours now and forever. Amen.

Breaking of the Bread, Pouring of the Cup

Sharing of the Elements [Communion is served by intinction. You are invited to come forward, take a piece of bread (all gluten-free), dip it into the chalice, and then eat it.]

Prayer after Communion Eternal God, we give you thanks for this holy mystery in which you have given yourself to us. Grant that we may go into the world in the strength of your spirit to give ourselves for others. In the name of Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Worship notes

Our introit is a verse of Hymn 507, Look Who Gathers at Christ’s Table. Thomas Troeger’s text celebrates the radical hospitality that characterizes Christ’s welcome, which transcends time and reaches in all directions.

Worship will be held in the fellowship hall the next two Sundays, July 21 and 28.

Communion Sundays are a time to remember the Minister's Discretionary Fund (MDF). The MDF is used by the pastor for emergency and pastoral needs of church members and others in our com-munity. The needs have been great this year and the fund has been depleted. To designate a gift to this fund, make checks payable to FPC and put “MDF” on the memo line, or use the QR code on the back page to give online. Thank you.

Canoeing the Mountains Have you been planning all summer to read Canoeing the Mountains by Tod Bolsinger and just haven't been able to get started? On Sunday, July 21, the Rise and Shine adult class will begin a 4-week review of this book in preparation for conversation with Sharon upon her return from sabbatical. Sharon is reading this book now, too!

What's it about? This book describes the changing face of the church in the western world and how we need to adapt our behaviors as church leaders in order to do God's work in a rapidly changing environment. Think adventure instead of recipe! Please join us at 9:00 a.m. in room 6 next to the sanctuary. You don't have to read the book in advance, and we’ll provide the coffee.
