PNC Update:

The PNC (Pastor Nominating Committee) met for the first time on March 19th with members of the

Presbytery and our interim Pastor, Lorilyn. We completed five hours of training to get us prepared

to call a new Pastor. We had a follow up meeting on the 20th to get ourselves organized.

We will have regular scheduled meetings as we go through this process. The PNC will do our best

to keep the congregation informed of our progress.

The first week in April, Morgan will be developing the bulletin board in the atrium with PNC

information. There will be a “flowchart” posted on the bulletin board which shows the steps

required to complete our task. Please take a minute to look at this so you can understand the

process.

If you have any questions, please check with one of us. When we get to the point of interviewing

candidates, please note there is an element of confidentiality as we cannot identify any potential

candidate. This comes from the Presbytery.

We have confidence we will find the right person for FPC of Somerset. The PNC requests the

congregation pray for us as we go through this process.

Finally, the PNC wants to state we fully support Lorilyn as our interim pastor, as she leads us

through this period of transition.

After the sermon....

The sermon text for April 3, 2016 is Acts 5:27-32. It is a small part of the extended narrative

about Peter and John, their encounters with the Pharisees, and subsequent imprisonments . An

important lesson from this story, but excluded from the lectionary text, is found in verses

33-41. In this part of the story, we learn about Gamaliel. He was a teacher of the law,

respected by all the people, and willing to speak up before the council. Speaking about the

groups of insurgents that had threatened Roman rule, he said:

“Fellow Israelites, consider carefully what you propose to do to these men. For some

time ago Theudas rose up, claiming to be somebody, and a number of men, about four

hundred, joined him; but he was killed, and all who followed him were dispersed and

disappeared. After him Judas the Galilean rose up at the time of the census and got

people to follow him; he also perished, and all who followed him were scattered. So in

the present case, I tell you, keep away from these men and let them alone; because if

this plan or this undertaking is of human origin, it will fail; but if it is of God, you will

not be able to overthrow them—in that case you may even be found fighting against

God!”

Gamaliel recognized that it makes a difference whether activities are initiated by the will of

man or the will of God. Those initiated my humans risk failure because they depend upon

ongoing human activity to sustain them. People tire of working for causes they don't buy into,

or don't feel are making a difference. People like to get results from their efforts. Anything

short of immediate results tests one's endurance. It is hard work to keep doing something that

fails to produce the desired results. God takes the long term, big picture view of things. God

has the endurance to see God's vision through to the end.

As this congregation moves forward in its pastoral search process, it will be challenged to

discern what God wants for this church. The Pastor Nominating Committee (PNC) will listen

to many voices. Be sure yours is one of them. The future of this church depends upon the

congregation buying into the vision and mission that it discerns as God’s will for this time in

Somerset.

As the PNC seeks to discern the vision and mission for this congregation, and the person who

is best suited to assist in that journey, they will have to resist the power of voices that speak

merely about personal likes and dislikes. As Phil Lopsteich reminded us at the PNC training,

discipleship isn't about doing what one likes or enjoys doing. If that had been true, we can be

pretty certain that Jesus would not have accepted his fate of death on a cross. Joy and pleasure

come from doing that which pleases God.

Two Cents A Meal Over 20 years ago, our church family began the practice of collecting "two cents a meal" per person in a container every time we ate, with the money to be collected the last Sunday of the month and to be used for our church food projects. It started as a CIA (Children In Action) project to help make them aware of how blessed we are to have enough to eat... And to be mindful of those who go hungry. The children painted little "flour pots" that sat on family tables and counters to collect the money. Each church household got a flour pot, and the last Sunday of the month the CIA kids would collect the baggies of change in big baskets. We probably need new/additional flour pots to be sure each church household has one. But until then, please remember when you sit down to bounty, to each put two cents a meal in a container and to be thankful we have enough to share with our hungry community. And mark your home calendar for the last Sunday of the month to bring your collected Two Cents A Meal.

Guest, Carol Henderson, bookkeeper, reviewed the 2015 end-of-year income, expense and balance

sheet reports. Marshall Judy reviewed the present version of the 2016 budget. There is an

anticipated short fall of pledges from the prior year. Discussion followed with many suggestions

Worship

Lorilyn opened a discussion about a need to change Children’s Sunday School from during the

worship service to time outside of worship to meet the requirements stated in The Book of Order.

She had spoken with teachers and some parents to determine if there was a willingness to change

Children’s Sunday School to 10:00 a.m. on Sundays. Discussion followed. An alternative was

suggested to offer Children’s Sunday School on Wednesday evenings. Lorilyn said she would

discuss this option with parents and teachers before proceeding any further.

Personnel

Lorilyn expressed concerns that personnel records are not kept in the church office in locked files.

It was also noted that there was confusion about paid staff time off. Ed suggested that a review be

completed of the current personnel policy and that, if needed, procedures be developed by the

personnel committee for confidential storage of personnel documents.

A Time of Prayer

The meeting concluded with prayer led by Rev. Lorilyn Howie-Kipphut.
