First Night Alexandria Supports a Greener Environment

Dominion Energy Green Power has provided Renewable Energy Certificates on behalf of First Night Alexandria to support renewable energy production and help make the 2018 celebration a green event. These certificates represent the generation of 20,000 kWh of renewable energy, which avoids 27,700 pounds of carbon dioxide emissions. This has a greenhouse gas benefit equivalent to planting 322 trees or not driving 30,796 miles. 2018 marks the ninth year of this partnership. Visit  dominionenergy.com/vagreenpower  to learn more and enroll your home or business in the Dominion Energy Green Power program.”

First Night Alexandria  showcases and supports the performing and visual arts by producing a safe and fun, family-friendly, alcohol - free New Year’s Eve celebration each December 31st. Our goal is to provide an alternative to traditional New Year’s Eve celebrations that enables the public to enjoy an evening of entertainment that is family-friendly and affordable. By providing a variety of music genres and interactive events we are able to introduce the public to a diverse range of performers and broaden their cultural experiences.  Through the collaborative support of churches, museums, retail establishments, libraries, private clubs, buildings and offices, recreation centers, city-owned facilities, theaters, and hotels, these locations become venues to enjoy artistic expression.

Venue Etiquette

First Night Alexandria is designed to showcase multiple performers in small venues. In order to see many shows, plan to move from venue to venue. You can plan to see shows close together or walk the melodious mile from the Rail (King Street Metro) to the River (waterfront) and the adjacent side streets. Take time for a meal with one of our restaurant sponsors listed on the back of the badge.

If a venue is crowded, please move on to the next and try that one later. Wait until the last group departs and then enter to find a seat. Please do not block the aisles and exits, be courteous to small children, the elderly, and persons with disabilities. Please leave the venues clean and trash-free for the enjoyment of all patrons. Please don’t bring pets into the venues, except for service dogs.

The last show at most venues starts at 10:45 pm. Proceed to the waterfront for a street party and dancing which begins at 10:00 pm or inside the Great Hall at the George Washington Masonic Memorial. Fireworks are clearly visible from both locations at midnight.
