Dear Friends;
“The Lord has risen indeed!” Luke 24:34
This is our Easter greeting and the reason for our joy. Jesus, the one who was born in Bethle-
hem to Mary, has conquered death. He was killed by being crucified and buried, but on Easter
morning all the power of God was made manifest and he was raised from the dead. He had
conquered death for all of us. Every Sunday we celebrate the Resurrection of Jesus, the Son of
God, but on Easter Sunday we highlight it even more. On Easter Sunday we will sing the
hymns of the Resurrection and dress in white to remember the purity of Christ. We will have
Easter lilies and other spring flowers in church. Bring the whole family and come to be part of
the celebration.
During Holy Week we have worship services on both Maundy Thursday and Good Friday. On
Thursday we remember Jesus’ last meal with the disciples and the institution of Holy Com-
munion. On Good Friday we remember the suffering and death of Jesus on the cross. This is
our story. Come and be part of it.
See you in Church,
Pastor Peterson

Worship and Study
Prayer Corner
Worship Matters by Shirley Cogan Bible Study Opportunities
TUESDAY BIBLE CLASS We are currently studying the Book of First Thessalonians. This is a natural follow-up to our study of the Book of Revelation. We will study Second Thessalonians after that, followed by 1, 2 and 3 John. During the summer months we will be studying "Our Neighbors’ Faith". Class members have given me a list of denominations they would like to know more about. We will have Guest Speakers on the third Tuesday of each month. I am in process of making up our calendar and securing our Guest Speakers. During July Barb Reed, our church Secretary, will be tell-ing us about her recent trip to the Holy Land. All are welcome. Join us each Tuesday in the Fireside Room from 10:00-11:00am. Bring your Bible. John Bennethum is our Teacher. Following class a group usually goes out for lunch. You are most welcome to join us.
Greetings, Friends in Christ,
As you know, we are in the Lenten Season. I think that
this is one of the most special parts of our church year. During the
Advent season, we joyfully anticipate the coming of our Lord’s
birthday anniversary; but the Lenten season gives us time to reflect
on Christ’s sacrifice for us and to examine our relationship with
Him.
Is our relationship with Christ a close one? Or is it lack-
ing, and just a bit “shaky”? Do you go to church as often as you
should? Do you pray daily? Are you into His word? How’s that
Great Commandment doing in your life? (Love your neighbor as
yourself). Each new day is an opportunity to do better.
I found this poem by Kent M. Keith some time ago. I’d
like to share it with you. (Mother Theresa had it on the wall of her
home for children in Calcutta, India.) May it inspire us all, in His
service. Remember, Jesus Christ is our peace. He makes friends
out of strangers, breaks down walls and builds all of us up to be
His obedient children.
“The Paradoxical Commandments”
1. People are unreasonable, illogical and self-centered. Love
them anyway.
2. If you do good, people accuse you of selfish ulterior motives.
Do good anyway.
3. If you are successful, you will win false friends and true
enemies. Succeed anyway.
4. The good you do today will be forgotten tomorrow. Do good
anyway.
5. Honesty and frankness make you vulnerable. Be honest and
frank anyway.
6. The biggest men and women with the biggest ideas can be shot
down by the smallest men and women with the smallest minds.
Think big anyway.
7. People favor underdogs but follow only top dogs. Fight for a
few underdogs anyway.
8. What you spend years building may be destroyed overnight.
Build anyway.
9. People really need help but may attack you if you do help
them. Help people anyway.
10. Give the world the best you have and you’ll get kicked in the
teeth. Give the world the best you have anyway.
You see, in the final analysis, it is between you and God. It was
never between you and them anyway.
Have a peace-filled Easter,
Shirley Cogan

Palm Sunday Benefit Concert
Our Palm Sunday Benefit Concert will again feature
vocalists Susan Platt & Gus Barnes, Jr. along with Or-
ganist/Accompanist Dennis Jon Wolfgang. They will
also be joined by tenor Dennis Parker, a member of

ple of years; our hope is that Mr. Parker will be able to
join us in our musical offerings.
Our special guests will be the Carson Chin Baptist
Youth Choir, complete with ethnic clothing and art
weavings. Learn about the Chin people, refugees from
Myanmar (Burma) who have resettled their lives and
families in the United States due to persecution and
religious intolerance toward Christians in their home-
land. Founding Senior Pastor Ron Nanuk will discuss
their journey as a church and their homeland.
The concert will also feature:
“The Palms” by Faure
Three arias by Giacomo Puccini
Highlights from Andrew Lloyd Webbers “Jesus Christ
Superstar”
Three Organ Compositions
Stephen Adams’ “The Holy City”
The reception following the concert will be a multi-
cultural event featuring food from many cultures.
A free will offering will be accepted. Proceeds benefit
First Lutheran’s handicapped accessibility fund, im-
proving access for members and visitors to our food
pantry. Donations of non-perishable food items ac-
cepted for our food pantry.
Jesus Christ Is Risen Today -
ELW #365
Just as “Silent Night” or “O Come
All Ye Faithful” bring immediate thoughts of
Christmas when we hear the first strains, “Jesus
Christ Is Risen Today” immediately invokes
thoughts of Our Lord’s Resurrection. My hope was
that there would be a wonderful story behind this
hymn, but alas, we have the hymn’s great universal
appeal but no great story
This hymn originated in a 14th century Latin carol
from Bohemia, on the text “Benedicamus Dom-
ino,” with just the first three verses as we have
them in the hymnal. The text was actually found in
three manuscripts from the fourteenth century, in
Prague, in Engelberg and in Munich. It was trans-
lated into English by Nahum Tate (a poet laureate)
and Nicholas Brady (an Anglican clergyman) and
paired with the tune "Easter Hymn" in the book
“Lyra Davidica” or a “Collection of Divine Songs
and Hymns, partly new composed, partly translated
from German and Latin Hymns; and set to easy and
pleasant tunes” published by John Walsh, a famous
printer, in 1708.
Then after major revisions and with new stanzas, it
was published in Arnolds “Compleat Psalmodist”
in 1779. The fourth stanza which begins, "Sing we
to our God above," was written in 1740 by Charles
Wesley and added much later –– apparently long
after the 1779 publication of “Compleat
Psalmodist.”
The tune “Easter Hymn” or sometimes called
“Worgan” appeared with the hymn in 1708 and was
a more elaborate and florid melody. The tune went
through numerous changes and simplifications as it
passed through the last of the eighteenth century.
The tune seems to have been quite popular, appear-
ing in a number of English and, later American
Hymn collections. It is sometimes attributed to a
“Dr. Worgan,” and Henry Edward Dibdin in the
preface to his “Standard Psalm Tune Book,” 1851,
attributed it to Henry Carey.
The long and short of it is at this point we do not
know who wrote either the text or the melody.

Prescription medication can pile up in the cupboards. Don’t flush - drop it off safely! Flushing unused medica-tions risks our drinking water and wildlife. Also, keeping unused medication around risks accidental poisoning and poses risks to children or others abusing prescrip-tion drugs.
This event provides a convenient way to safely dispose of unused prescription drugs.

A 20th-century Martyr
Dietrich Bonhoeffer (1906-1945) was born in Germany to parents who rarely took their chil-dren to church. When, at age 14, he declared his intent to become a theologian and pastor, his parents were dismayed. According to Mark Devine in Bonhoeffer Speaks Today, Dietrich’s brother called the church a “poor, feeble, boring, petty, bourgeois institution” — to which Dietrich replied, “If what you say is true, I shall reform it!”
At 21, Bonhoeffer earned a doctorate in theol-ogy. Too young for ordination, he attended Union Theological Seminary in New York and gained sympathy for oppressed people. Bonhoeffer returned to Germany and was ordained at age 25.
Opposed to Hitler’s rule from its start, Bonhoeffer helped form the Confessing Church in resistance to Nazi persecution of Jews. He was arrested in 1943 and hanged in April 1945, only weeks before Germany’s sur-render.
Shortly before his death, Bonhoeffer famously declared: “This is the end — for me the begin-ning of life.”
“Behold … the spring is come; the earth
has gladly received the embraces of the
sun, and we shall soon see the results of
their love!” —Sitting Bull

The jug is back! Look for it in the Narthex and deposit
your change, or bills! It was emptied to prevent poten-
tial problems. The total amount of money in the jug
was: $264! Joyce Favre won a paczki for guessing the
amount of money closest to the actual amount. Con-
gratulations, Joyce! With a now empty jug, we will
attempt to exceed the $264 at the next count. The paczki sale gave us a profit of $152. That plus the $264,
will go into the Accessibility Fund.

Are you taking advantage of the opportunity to express your opinions, ideas, etc. concerning First Lutheran
Church? We would like your input. One question has been presented each weekend of Lent. Parishioners are
asked to anonymously write their answers on the sheet of paper and deposit in the colorful box in the narthex.
If you have not been in church, four of the questions are printed below. Please think about each question,
answer each on a piece of paper, and return to the church. The following questions have been presented:
1. The things that concern me most about our congregation are:
2. If our congregation would-________, I know that I would call my friends and tell what they are missing.
3. If our congregation did not continue to_______, I would lose interest in remaining a member.
4. If with a stroke of a pen, I could change one thing in our congregation, it would be:
There are two remaining questions which will be supplied in the church bulletin. We want YOUR thoughts
and ideas! In conclusion, we will tabulate the answers and share them with you.

Prayer can help... If serious
illness or other life factors affect you
or those you love, contact the church
office and we will send your request through
our prayer chain. We have people who will
pray for your need. If you are interested in
joining a prayer chain, contact Marie Le
Page (First Lutheran), Laverne Breed
(Nativity Lutheran) or the church office.

her class that Jesus was buried in a borrowed tomb, one girl
raised her hand to share an insight. “I know why,” the girl
said. “It’s because Jesus only used it for three days.”
