Types of Fish

• The main types of fish are halibut*, salmon*, herring, ling cod, smelt, sturgeon, and eulachon.

• They preserved the fish by smoking or drying them.

• The fathers caught the fish. The mothers prepared them. The children helped the parents.

Weirs

• A weir is a type of fence.• They go across a stream.• The salmon are caught by

getting trapped against the fence.

• Fishermen spear or net the fish.

Nets

• Nets are made from cedar bark and stems from nettle plants.

• Reef nets are tied between two canoes.• A dip net has a long handle with a net

attached.• There are bag shaped nets that go across a

stream attached to posts.

Traps

• Traps are made out of logs or rocks placed on the beach.

• The First Nations use the tides to catch the fish.
