Rejoice in the Lord! Dear Friends in Christ,

Some might remember the old song we used to sing: School days, school days Dear old golden rule days Readin' and 'ritin' and 'rithmetic Taught to the tune of the hickory stick You were my queen in calico I was your bashful, barefoot beau And you wrote on my slate, "I Love You, Joe" When we were a couple o' kids *

Education has certainly changed since this song was written in 1907. Gone is the stick, and slates have been replaced with iPads. However, as schools get back in session, learn-ing is still going on, relationships are formed, and the Golden Rule** is still a great way to live with others.

In the church, too, we are called to learn. Life-long rela-tionships are also formed. And the Golden Rule always ap-plies. Jesus encourages us:

Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. (Matthew 11:29)

The Apostle Paul, too: Whatever you have learned or re-ceived or heard from me, or seen in me—put it into prac-tice. And the God of peace will be with you. (Philippians 4:9)

To ‘take the yoke’ can mean to enter into the discipline of learning. And, Paul adds himself as a mentor and example as a teacher. Together in community is a great way to learn, from each other and from God.

I am glad that Immersion Bible study is resuming for adults on Sept. 20—9:15 am on Sunday mornings. Sunday School and confirmation classes recommence, too. I’m also excited about the Sunday preaching series being planned about Loving Hearts. (John 13:34-35) And God says to each of us, “I love you so!”, as we learn and grow in Him.

In the light of His love, Pastor John F. Holt

* School Days written by Will Cobb and Gus Edwards (1907)

** Matt. 512 So in everything, do to others what you would have them do to you...

Blessed to be a Blessing!

Update from the Church Council In July, most members of the First Lutheran Church Council

along with FLC program staff members went on a planning re-treat at the Czech Inn, near Hayward. We enjoyed getting to know one another better and spending a Saturday morning and afternoon together. Besides inspirational, devotional, learning and prayer time, we spent time in an exercise called a SWOT analysis—meaning Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats. Then we shared dreams we have for FLC. As follow-through from our retreat, we spent time at our regular August Council, setting some goals.

Pastor Diane Odermann joined us as interim associate pastor on June 16. She and Pastor Holt are forming a good working relationship. Pastor Stoa is improving in health and is eager to get back to leading visitation ministries.

The FLC Church Council polled members of the Call Commit-tee formed in 2012. Some are unable to continue. Next steps include re-evaluating the associate pastor/minister position, what we, as a congregation need, and then proceeding with a call or search committee. The Council intends to keep the congregation well informed. May the Lord direct our steps.

MUSICAL NOTES

The example of Jesus Christ is a powerful example of love and openness and acceptance and hope. Jesus said, "Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these." (Matthew 19:14) Schools are resuming, fall is in the air, and YES!!!, it is time for Children's Choirs of First Lutheran Church to resume rehearsals and sharing their music in worship services. Our children are the future leaders of our church. They are already leaders in the church. They are creative and talented--energetic and smart--open to learn and quick to learn! Their joyous voic-es and pure spirits add tremendously to our worship experience. We are hoping to grow our children's choirs this season--not for the sake of growth or numbers, but to give these young people an opportunity to learn and grow in their spiritual journey, their musical journey, and their leadership development journey. Transportation should not be an issue for children and parents who want to support this ministry. We are working on a plan with the school bus transportation company to have them pick up choir participants at their school and drop them at 301 West Clark Street at First Lutheran Church for our Wednesday practices. We also have a few individuals who have volunteered to shuttle children to the Wednesday rehearsals. Please call Tim O'Shields at the church for additional details.

its Fall Lutheran World Relief Ingathering on Saturday, October 10, from 7:30 a.m.— 12 noon. School, sewing, and health kits, quilts, layettes, and soap will be collected. With all the current sales on school supplies, it’s a great time to assemble school kits!!

Thank you very much, members of First Lutheran, for your generous response to the special cause offering for July: the ELCA World Hunger Appeal. The total amount given was $3088.35, with 2058.90 going to World Hunger and $1029.45 for fighting Malaria.

Social Ministry Commission, Sharon Overgaard

Summer is a very busy and precious time in Minnesota. Many families and individuals attend church less regularly during the summer months while pursuing travel and leisure opportunities that are limited to our short summer months. The Evangelism Commission is eager to wel-come everyone back into a more consistent routine as the fall school schedule kicks off and attendance at church increases. Hebrews 10:25 speaks to the importance of making worshiping together a habit, and a regular occurrence. We would like to propose several easy ways to advance your commitment or service to our church and to others in the following ways:

Signup your son or daughter, niece or nephew, grandchildren, or oth-er special child in your life for Sunday School! Rally Sunday is Septem-ber 13!

Bake Muffins and drop off at the Rock for "Morning Muffins" for mid-dle-schoolers starting September 16. Contact DeeAnn at 373-1015 for more information.

Ask someone you love about a goal you can make together regarding your own growth in faith this coming fall. Make growth in faith a priority and bring a loved one with you!

When you need prayer...Call the prayer chain coordinators, Betty Ruud 373-5906 or Ione Kelly 373-2141. All prayer requests are handled confidentially.

To support people at the time of illness or injury we pastors do make personal visits in the hospital, homes or Care Centers. We occasion-ally check local hospital lists, but sometimes names do not show up on the list. So, please, call, if you want us to know. We try to be available in emergencies. Do not hesitate to call the church, if you have not seen a pastor and would like to request a visit. Pastors’ numbers are on the recording when you phone the church office af-ter hours. We ask permission before we include a name on our print-ed prayer list. Please let us know if you want to be on the list or be

visited. ~Your FLC Pastors
