TODAY’S MUSIC

Georg Philipp Telemann (1681- 1767) was four years Sebastian Bach’s senior. He was the Leipzig Town Council’s first choice to be cantor of the Thomaskirche, a position which eventually went to Bach as, if it is to be believed, about the third runner-up. The deal proved to be a boon to Telemann, who got a considerable raise in salary at Hamburg. Telemann was famous for his ability to play a number of instruments exceptionally well. Consequently, his music is some of the most idiomatic of any composed in his era, and seems, even in its most complex and technical passages, to fit perfectly within the scope of its intended instrument. The Twelve Fantasies for Violin without bass (1735) were geared toward the domestic market. They exploit the possibilities of the solo violin including double and triple stops and string crossings that imply polyphonic writing not otherwise possible on a melody instrument. Louis-Nicolas Clérambault (1676 –1749) was a French musician, best known as an organist and composer. He was born, and died, in Paris. Clérambault became the organist at the church of the Grands-Augustins and entered the service of Madame de Maintenon. After the death of Louis XIV and Guillaume-Gabriel Nivers, he succeeded the latter at the organ of the church of Saint-Sulpice in Paris. American composer and conductor Leonard Bernstein (1918-1990) was conductor of the New York Philharmonic and composer of “West Side Story.” He was commissioned to write “Mass” for the opening of the Kennedy Center in Washington, DC in 1971. New Jersey native Alfred Fedak (b. 1953) is currently director of music at Westminster Presbyterian Church in Albany. His many choral compositions are frequently heard in American churches.

TODAY’S SCRIPTURE READINGS

Zechariah 9:9-12 (NRSV) Rejoice greatly, O daughter Zion! Shout aloud, O daughter Jerusalem! Lo, your king comes to you; triumphant and victorious is he, humble and riding on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey. 10He will cut off the chariot from Ephraim and the war horse from Jerusalem; and the battle bow shall be cut off, and he shall command peace to the nations; his dominion shall be from sea to sea, and from the River to the ends of the earth. 11As for you also, because of the blood of my covenant with you, I will set your prisoners free from the waterless pit. 12Return to your stronghold, O prisoners of hope; today I declare that I will restore to you double. Matthew 11:16-19,25-30 (NRSV) “But to what will I compare this generation? It is like children sitting in the marketplaces and calling to one another, 17‘We played the flute for you, and you did not dance; we wailed, and you did not mourn.’ 18For John came neither eating nor drinking, and they say, ‘He has a demon’; 19the Son of Man came eating and drinking, and they say, ‘Look, a glutton and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners!’ Yet wisdom is vindicated by her deeds.”

25At that time Jesus said, “I thank you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because you have hidden these things from the wise and the intelligent and have revealed them to infants; 26yes, Father, for such was your gracious will. 27All things have been handed over to me by my Father; and no one knows the Son except the Father, and no one knows the Father except the Son and anyone to whom the Son chooses to reveal him. 28“Come to me, all you that are weary and are carrying heavy burdens, and I will give you rest. 29Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me; for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. 30For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.”
