TODAY’S GOSPEL In those days before the flood, they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, up to the day that Noah entered the ark. They did not know until the flood came and carried them all away. So will it be also at the coming of the Son of Man. Two men will be out in the field; one will be taken, and one will be left. Two women will be grinding at the mill; one will be taken, and one will be left. Therefore, stay awake! For you do not know on which day your Lord will come. Be sure of this: if the master of the house had known the hour of night when the thief was coming, he would have stayed awake and not let his house be broken into. So too, you also must be prepared, for at an hour you do not expect, the Son of Man will come.”

FIRST SUNDAY OF ADVENT NOVEMBER 27TH, 2016

PREPARING FOR THE BIRTH OF JESUS

The Advent wreath is traditionally made of ever-greens in a circle, symbolizing God’s everlasting and unending love. There are four candles, three purple and one pink that count down the weeks until Christmas. The first, a purple candle, is lit four Sundays before Christmas. Another purple candle is lit three Sundays before Christmas. The pink candle is added two Sundays before Christmas, and all four candles are lit on the final Sunday before Christmas.

In the Gospel reading on the First Sunday of Advent (Matthew 24:37-44), Jesus warns that we must be prepared for the coming of the Son of man. We shouldn’t be so caught up in the excitement and anxieties of daily life that we’re caught off guard.

This is a message to embrace both during Advent, when we are waiting for Jesus’ coming as an infant in the manger, and every day, because, as he points out, Jesus could return at any time.

Create a welcome atmosphere for Jesus in our home, your heart, and your head. Light a candle each evening during Advent, whether from your Advent wreath or another, and think. Breathe. Pray. Listen to the sounds around you and to the words Jesus speaks to you. Inhale the scent of the candle. Grow aware of the warmth you enjoy. Keep the fire lit in your heart, and be ready for his presence. May God bless you, Father Leonardo Jaramillo, Ph.D.

GOSPEL REFLECTION

Throughout Jewish history it was traditional for Jews to demonstrate repentance through washing ceremonies. John the Baptist was preaching repentance for the coming of God's reign. His baptism may have been related to the purifying washings of the Essenes at Qumran near the

was God's anointed one. John answered that his baptism was only a preparation for "one mightier" who would aptize with "the Holy Spirit and fire" (v 16). Although

Jesus had no need of repentance, he entered the murky waters where the people had been baptized, thereby uniting himself with sinful humanity. The baptism of Jesus was another "epiphany," or manifestation of the divine presence. While Jesus was praying, the Spirit descended upon him, and God's voice was heard confirming Jesus as the "beloved Son" (v.22). On Calvary, Jesus would undergo a baptism of fire that would bring salvation to the whole world (Lk 12:49-50). This transforming fire would be poured out on the Church at Pentecost (Acts 2:1-4).

PARISH MINISTRY “As each has received a gift, use it to serve one another, as good stewards of God’s varied grace.” 1 Peter 4:10

LIFE’S LITTLE INSTRUCTION BOOK

In the gospel today Jesus warns us that “no one knows” (24:36) the day or hour of his return. But it is assured that “the Son of Man will come” (v.44), so we are called to live lives of active vigilance. Chapter 24 in Matthew, frequently called the “Eschatological Discourse” contains a collection of Jesus’ sayings about the coming judgment that will bring about the realization of the reign of God. Isaiah, writing more than seven hundred years before Christ, envisions a day when “all nations shall stream toward” (2:2)

day when “all nations shall stream toward” (2:2) the mountain of Jerusalem, “the mountain of the Lord’s house” (v.2). As “the highest mountain” (v.2) it will be a place for instruction in God’s ways. And from this mountain “the word of the Lord” (v.3) will go forth to enlighten the nations. This time will be a time of global peace and cooperation as other nations seek to “walk in his paths” (v.3). “They shall beat their swords into plowshares” (v.4), turning weapons of warfare into tools for farming. Writing to the Romans, Paul also has a heightened sense of urgency. “The day is at hand,” (13:12) he tells them. “It is the hour now for you to awake from sleep,” (v.11). Nighttime and darkness are associated with evil behavior. As people who share in God’s light we are to live good and holy lives in anticipation of His return. Some two thousand years later we still wait for His coming and like Paul’s audience we are called to “conduct ourselves properly” (v.13), walking in God’s light. For Reflection: How can I make this Advent season more of a time of spiritual reflection concerning Christ’s return? Are there any “swords” in my life that need to be turned into “plowshares”?

Lord God, Your Church joyfully awaits the coming of its Savior, who enlightens our hearts and dispels the darkness of ignorance and sin.

Pour forth your blessings upon us as we light the candles of this wreath; may their light reflect the splendor of Christ, who is Lord, for ever and ever. Amen

Oremos. Amen.
