First Family News church does too. I’m also excited about those working with Joel in this process. His wife Cara, who already volunteers her time for our church is giving even more. Our adult volunteers look to be bought in and excited for what this interim season might bring. And now, we even have the added help of our new Ministry Intern, Noah Warren! We’re excited that Noah was available to partner with us during this time, and we are grateful to be a part of his story as he refines God’s calling on his life. There are such good days ahead for our church and for our Student Ministry. I’m grateful for the servant hearts in our church to make that last sentence possible. What about you though? Are you serving in our church to help show love to our community? If not, today’s a good day to start. Why not talk to Joel, Amy in our children’s ministry and CDO, Julie in our nursery, Bill in our traditional worship, or me so that you can find a place to utilize your God-given gifts to bless the people of this church and community? A First Priority, Not a Last Resort . . . September 22-29 was a time of 24/7 prayer in our church, with various mem-bers each committing to praying for a specific 30-minute period each day for a week. Having this emphasis at the begin-ning of our church year seems especially appropriate. This will likely be a busy year here at First Baptist, and we do well

to get it started with a unified time of prayer. Probably all of us, after struggling with an issue for some peri-od of time without success, have either spoken or thought words like these: “Well, all I can do now is pray.” I don’t think anyone really intends this meaning, but the implication is that we are to do all we possibly can and, when we’ve done everything we can imagine, then it’s finally time to start praying. Clearly, God nev-er intended for us to think of prayer as a “last resort,” a sort of “Plan B” to fall back on when everything we have done has failed to produce the result for which we had hoped. How much better to begin with prayer! Of course, we will likely still find ourselves busy, but that work will be done under the guidance of the One who sees what lies ahead of us. We may be tempted to think we haven’t enough time to pray, given all the things we have to do. I’m reminded of the experience of one godly individual who determined that his day was so busy that he couldn’t imagine attacking it without spending more time than usual in prayerful preparation. Someone has suggested what appears to be a proper balance: pray as if everything de-pends on God, and work as if everything depends on you . . . But begin with prayer. “THANK YOU!” church, for prioritizing prayer with your time as well as its timing. It’s going to be exciting to see where it leads us this year. I’m so glad to be a part of it with you.

I have the great task of covering some happenings in Contemporary Worship and the Student Ministry. Our students have been looking at what it means to find our identity in Christ. Wrapped up within that is the desire that we all have to hear what God is saying to each of us

in a given season. I think looking at certain ways to hear God speaking to us applies directly to worship and student ministry! It can, at times, feel like understanding and discerning what God is calling us to is not an easy task. Sometimes, it may seem like hearing from God is a fairly arduous thing. It may feel like it requires work or maybe we just don’t know exactly the direction we need to move in a given moment. At certain times in my life, different spiritual practices have helped me seek God’s voice. One of those particular spiritual disciplines is that of silent reflection. In my time with God, I typically find myself doing most of the talking. I have to remind myself to take time to sit still before God and listen. For years, I assumed being silent before God was much like having to sit quietly when I got in trouble as a little kid. I only sat still when I had to! I had a mentor explain that silence is often a time of healing and a time of reflection. We read, work, sing, and speak nonstop, but are rarely silent before God. Lately, I have made the practice of spending at least some time in silent reflection before I pray. Psalm 46:10 says, “Be still, and know that I am God.” When we are still before God, it often helps to center our thoughts and give us direction and focus on what He has for us. As we go through this week, may we be aware of how we stay so busy that sometimes we don’t hear God amongst all of the craziness, and may we look to place our fo-cus on what God has for us. In the stillness and solemn times, may we be attuned to God’s voice and the ways He desires to speak to us. In the Student Ministry, we are soon to be looking deeply at the Parables at Jesus. Please be in prayer for our students as they continue to grow in relationships with God and learn more about the teachings of Jesus.

Grace and Peace,

Joel

From the Children’s Director

On to October! This month we have a lot of extra activities going on at CDO! The color of the month for October is Orange! You can all join us on October 8th and wear Orange to help us at CDO cele-brate the color of the month. Coming up on October 10th is our PreK class going on their fall field trip to Mainstay Farm. That will be such an exciting time! October 24th we will have our fall picture day. So come ready to show us your best smile! Then on October 31st, we will have our fall parties and activi-ties! More details will come on this later. If you would like to help out on this day, please let me know. Feel free to send kids dressed up in costumes. Our teachers here at CDO are so important to our program; we couldn’t make it without them! Please pray for all of our teachers this month. They are making a difference every day with our kids.

Welcome October!! Fall is my favorite season. It reminds me that all around me things are changing, but God is always the same . . . yesterday, today, tomorrow, forever! Due to the extended heat wave during the month of Septem-ber, we moved our Father—Son Campout to the 5th of October! Hope to see lots of our dads there making memories with their sons! It will be a lot of fun! Don’t forget. This event is free. At the end of the month is our annual Fall Festival! We have scheduled the Fall Festival on Wednesday evening, October 30th, from 6pm until 8pm! We will have games, food, and prizes in the back parking lot! We could use your help to make this wonderful night a success! If you would like to help, please let me know! We have all kinds of jobs available. I know we have a spot just for you! Be praying for this event, it is a wonderful outreach opportunity. People, who never come to church, come to fall festivals! This time of year can be very scary for some children. Fear opens up an opportunity for you as a parent to talk to them about God, and how he is always with us, so we don’t have to be afraid! It also gives an opportunity to talk to your kids about prayer, because when they are scared they can talk to God. Take advantage of these times. Don’t forget to pray for and WITH your kids each day! Chil-dren learn best by observing and repetition, so praying with them and for them daily teaches them that they should pray daily! I would love to come to your child’s school activities or sport events, so let me know when they are happening and I will do my best to be there!
